Is there a definitive noise album anyone looking to get into this genre should listen to? You know, there's always that one album that's a perfect example of what the genre is all about and is deemed one of those really amazing albums and all. I was just wondering about this the other day. Is there one album that every noise enthusiast owns and recommends to people who are looking to get into this kind of "music"?

If not, just pop out some good suggestions. It's all good.

You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr. is a classic and basically invented Noise-Rock, if that counts.

If I want to listen to Noise, I put in DJ Tron's Chrome Padded Cell but thats probably not the genre you are looking for.

Thats just my guess.

alot of people jam Breakcore and glitch into that genre subgroup too.

for those styles, i would suggest Bogdan Raczinski. Specifically his album "I Will Eat Your Children Too"

Sunn 0))) - Flight of the Behemoth
Cult of Luna - Salvation
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

Well it depends what kind of noise you're looking for, something that'll strip paint? or something more subtle and creepy?  I've not listened to that much Merzbow though. I go for (maybe) more subtle stuff. Here are a few of my favorite 'noise' artists and my fave albums by them.
Yellow Swans-Fairly rhthymic almost dancable noise, sometimes droning. Their 'Dreamed Yellow Swans' CD is perfect

Hair Police-Used to be spaz noise but they've moved on to extended dirges of terror. rattlers echo 3" CD-R is my fave, though the main track is on their new full length 'Constantly terrified which I'm waiting for in the mail.

Wolf Eyes-Vary between agressive and creepy my fave by them is Dread but I've not gotten Burned Mind yet.

Skullflower-More of a really heavy drone band. They're often credited as forebears to Sunn 0)).The album Obsidian Shaking Codex is unbeatable.

Mammal-Really good rhythmic noise crunch. My fave is his Fog Walkers LP but it's very out of print.Lately he's gotten harsher.

Gang Wizard-Technically a noise rock band but they'll kick the ass of a lot of straight noise bands too. Go too http://www.tapemountain.com for a free live album to download.

Other good noise-rock bands: Big Black, Sightings, Magik Markers, The dead C (I'm probably forgetting some).

I know lots of places to buy noise if there's a particular album you're looking for.

Pulse Demon if you want a cohesive yet difficult release.

1930 if you want something more fleshy than the rather thin-sounding drones or noise blasts that dominate much of his work.

Dharma if you would like a Merzbow album to have a hypnotic and meditative effect (though it will still be loud).

Fuck yeah it is. If I remember correctly, he recorded himself doing weird shit with his voice when on tour and then mixed alot of it later. Maldoror )i think that's the name) is another noise projects he did which was quite good.

it's faldoror. government alpha and s. isabella are the same guy, and both are wonderful. you should get sporadic spectra by the first, or maybe the split he did with bastard noise. rancid shit wank are probably the single most unlistenable band on earth right now, i only have this one thing they did but it's fucking awful. masonna is wonderful, i don't think you can really go wrong with any of his albums. the gerogerigegege are my personal favourite noise band, but you'll be very lucky to find anything by them. as for merzbow, he put out a fifty cd box set that, if you have the money, you should definitely buy. you might need to get an extension built onto your house though.

Wolf Eyes' Burned Mind is FUCKED UP.

It's the most disturbing collection of sounds I've ever heard committed to recordable media. It's scary. I've never heard music that I thought was "scary", but that's Wolf Eyes to a T.

There is a merzbow/empire studio colaboration, but isn't that hot in all truth.  But anyway, here are some noise/avant suggestions.  Most of the really good harsh noise acts have been addressed, and I'd say if you're going to rock the Merzbow thing, try anything prior to 1994 first.  Form the late 70's to early 90's, Akita dealt only in analogue noise (tape loops and unprocessed distortion).  In the mid 90's, ol Merz bought himself a powerbook and hasn't really looked back.  It's awesome, but not AS AWESOME.  Also, try Air Conditioning, they be good and way harsh.  On the other hand, if you want a really wonderful drone project, try Keith Fullerton Whitman, you can barely do better.  Someone mentioned D Yellow Swans and they rip it up all night long, so word to that.  Someone esle mentioned Skullflower and WORD TO THAT.  Also try Sunroof!, same lead dude, different incarnation, outstanding.  Also...Greg Davis...Christain Marclay (avant turntables...oh shit)...Otomo Yoshihide...Alvin Lucier...The Hafler Trio...  Yeah, that should get you well and started.  ALSO!  Listen to Staring at the Sun on WVFS in Tallahassee.  I host this noise/avant show from 12AM to 2AM on Monday mornings (Sunday nights).  We simulcast on wvfs.fsu.edu, so everyone can listen.  And that is the word up on that front.

Also, look up Lou Reed's album "Metal Machine Music" which is basically the first noise album ever.

I might go see Wolf Eyes in the fall.

Too bad Dillinger Escape Plan sucks now. You have to get Naked City man. It's excellent material. Anything with John Zorn is usually pretty good.

I personally think DEP suck. They're one of the most boring bands I've ever seen live who actually have a record deal. Surpassed only by We Will Be Pilots. It would have been a crap evening if Ephel Duath hadn't opened the evening in the best possible fashion. Me and about ten other guys and girls were at the front dancing, singing along and getting turns screaming into Luciano's microphone whilst the rest of the crowd tried to work out what the hell was happening.

It's because they're...ugh, I dunno. Soulless. No rhythm or feeling to them, it really is just showing off and noodling. Also, they are not particularly extreme or particularly heavy. Indie kids need to stop thinking they are WAY HARDCORE EXTREME DUDES for listening to bands like DEP, The Locust and The Number 12 Looks Like You. Not saying you do, it's just a general point.

Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, or perhaps I'm just not very cool, but I feel like most of the Velvet Underground's stuff is fairly definitive in terms of the early development of the style, and that Jesus & Mary Chain is pretty definitive of the mid/late-80's revival of interest.  (Otherwise, I cast my remaining two votes for Dinosaur Jr. and My Bloody Valentine.)

I've been listening to Wonderful Rainbow by Lightning Bolt a lot. Cool shit.

Agreed! Lightning Bolt rule.

I'm a huge noise fan, let me throw some band names at you:

Noise rock:
mclusky - just in case you don't know them, they rule. And they're also slightly insane (eh ... were). Especially live.
North of America - check their album This Is Dancefloor Numerology. It's a bastard of noise, math and some hardcore elements. Aggressive, angular very, very pissed off.

Noise:
Lightning Bolt - A drumkit, a bass, a 4800W amp. Say hello to Lightning Bolt. This music makes you wanna dance and crank up that album even louder. Also, it's noise. This is what Death From Above 1979 would sound like if they weren't pussies.
The White Mice - Bass, drums, oscillator. Also signed to Load Records, they produce a very strange combination of feedback and sudden fast attacks.
Burmese - Two basses, two drums, lyrics gloryfying rape and war. Imagine the Melvins played even slower and forgot everything about structure or melody. Add feedback and distorted screaming and a few grindcore attacks here and there - tada! Pure hate.
This band also gets a price for most violent live shows ever.
Black Dice - Sigur Rós meets Merzbow.

Music that's technically not noise but would be categorized as such by many people:
Daughters - Spastic grindcore. And by this, I mean they make The Locust look sane in comparison.
Ion Dissonance - extremely brutal metalcore. A bit like DEP, except that there's no real song structure or melody but lots of worryingly fast double bass attacks scattered all over the place.
Mínus - during the album Jesus Christ Bobby. Hardcore meets noise (as in: feedback and distortition to an extent that's not nice anymore). The end result are walls of sound where you can't tell the vocals apart from the guitars or the cymbals.
They're also from Iceland, proving that Iceland doesn't only produce crappy ambient-sounding, pretentious pussy musicians.

There are more, but I can't think of any right now. When I'm not as lazy, I'll link to legal MP3s of these bands.

When did you see them? If they had long hair, they played their new album, which isn't noise at all but rather close to stoner rock or similar things.

However, your reaction might still be valid to some extent. Their albums is already just a blur of noise, live, it's even worse. If you don't expect or like that, I assume they just suck live because this really is just incomprehensible noise then.

Also, Black Dice do indeed rule.
