Hey kids.  I've got a sudden craving for music involving cellos, violins and possibly harpsichords, and I figured here might be a good place to seek it out.  Anybody got any suggestions?

Sure you know about Apocalyptica already. There are a load of Goth/Doom bands that have violins and cellos...but I have no idea if you want to hear that  sort of thing.

Bah!  Vile harpsichord!  I once played a piano which was in a horrible state of disrepair: it sounded remarkably similar to a harpsichord.  THIS IS NOT A COINCIDENCE!!!

EDIT: Okay, now I've got that out of my system I'll say something useful: are you after classical music?  If you are, it sounds like you're going for a Baroque kind of sound.  In that case - and hell, even if that's not the case - do yourself a favour, pick up a copy of Bach's B Minor Mass.  The version conducted by John Eliot Gardiner and played by the Monteverdi Choir and the English Baroque Soloists is jaw-dropping.  This is one of the greatest works of classical music ever written, and everyone should own a copy.

(...Omnia Vanitas)', 'Hades Pluton', 'The Sleeper', 'Saltatio Crudelitatis', 'The Inexperienced Spiral Traveller', 'Holy Water Moonlight', 'Beautiful Thorn', 'There Was A Country By The Sea' and 'The Feast of Blood'.

Hell, just get it all. Anna/Varney rules.

If you're not a metal fan, Cursive uses a cello, at least on their album The Ugly Organ.

Umm, Sopor Aeternus is Neo-classical/darkwave. In fact, they're probably lighter than Cursive a lot of the time.

Wow. I'm only making fun of the fact that I once confused you for a one-sided metal head. If you can't laugh at yourself, well, then I feel sorry for you. It was more of a jab towards me, anyhow.

It doesn't come off to me anywhere near how you're seeing it.

I just don't want him dissuaded from listening to Sopor Aeternus!

Harpsichords generally suck, but the Eels song "Last Stop, This Town" uses one wonderfully. If you want some good violin, check out "The Inner Mounting Flame" by the Mahavishnu Orchestra. The album has some truly excellent and beautiful but also hard-fiddle-tastic violin skills, provided by the virtuoso Jerry Goodman.

Sir Thomas Beecham compared the harpsichord to "Two skeletons copulating on a corrugated tin roof."  And, since I've never heard of anything to suggest that Beecham was into skeletons, I'm guessing that this was an unfavorable comparison.

That being said, if you really, really need to hear a harpsichord, then I recommend J.S.Bach - Harpsichord Concerto No. 2 in E major; or in fact any of Bach's Harpsichord Concerto's.  IMHO as good as the instrument is going to get.

Yeah, I'm sorry. It came out pretty stupid. No one should ignore your bands. ;D

And yeah; Bach. His music actually taught me what a harpsichord was. And I most likely still can't spell it correctly. XP

I'll also back up Bach. Always a good choice.

Actually, Borondir, from what I remember of your musical taste, you'd probably quite like Sopor Aeternus, if you haven't heard them/him/her/it*. The only thing to dislike really is the vocals, but they grow on you. I find them quite effective nowadays.
