Your favourite minion?

We all know that no shooter or rpg is complete without decent enemies to fight (in between bosses), but what I want to know is, which is your favourite, and why?

Personally, I rather like the Hellknight (of Doom 3 fame). 9 feet of pure demon muscle that also throws fireballs. Green ones. And that lumbering walk of his is damn menacing.

I wonder what on earth Switchblade's gonna vote for when he finds this topic??

Anyway, of recent games (and by "recent" I mean the last five years or so) I'd say my favourite would be the grunts from Half-Life.  I mean damn, they're just so tricky - though the fact that they're wearing snow camo in a desert setting seems a bit odd.

Going back a bit, the daemons from Ultima V just looked damn cool, and they kicked your arse to boot.  In Ultima VI onwards the cyclopses were pretty cool - the way the ground shook when they were stomping around, even off screen, and then when you see them they're twice as big as anything else in the game . . .

The Fetishes from Act III in Diablo 2. For the sheer hilarity of kicking open a basket and one of these guys hiding inside. That and the way they'll kick your ass so fast if you don't watch out (Unless you're a druid:)).

I'd say the super mutants from the Fallout games. Just when you're starting to feel a bit powerful, then these big guys decide to show up, waving their machineguns and miniguns at everything that moves...

Murlocs from WoW. You learn not to aggro them so you don't have to listen to their attacking sound.

Well shit, is it really that predictable that I'd turn up?

Shooters and RPG's, huh?

Shooter: Marka Ragnos, the final boss from Jedi Academy. Very cool, albeit a little too easy to defeat.

RPG's: Jon Irenicus, from Baldur's Gate 2. Purely because the guy's so DAMNED COOL.

and, for a change:

RTS: the Eldar Avatar, from Dawn of War. Seriously, that thing has a move where it impales its target on the end of its sword, and then holds the sword vertically and watches the victim slide down with a razor-sharp shaft of white-hot metal through his still-living body, before casually shaking him off. Plus, he leaves burning footprints as he walks, and one of his hands constantly drips with supernatural blood. ULTRA cool.

Actually I was thinking about cannon-fodder troops, rather than boss enemies, but I have to say that Irenicus is indeed several types of cool.

Haha. "the Scabies." For some reason the use of the definite article and capitalization greatly amused me there.

...Yeah, I know explaining a joke kills it. Now none of you fuckers will think it's funny.

I gotta say the Imps from Doom 1 & 2. Those lovable, brown, one-well-placed-shotgun-shell-taking, easy-to-dodge-fireball-throwing chaps.

"Stupid non-bonus-giving Imps!" was my favourite phrase while playing through Doom 2 (repeatedly).

My favourite part of Doom 2 was, in fact, any time in which I could kill a chaingun zombie with the super shottie. That rocked.

Also, I liked the Manhacks out of Half-Life 2 quite a bit. Mostly 'cos you could trap them with the gravity gun and use them as a buzzsaw in close combat. The rollermines were cooler though, especially used as a cannonball.

Tough tie. Either the goat-demons from Diablo I, because of that great noise they made when they died, and because they had that one really pimp-ass boss leader who shot red star things instead of arrows. That guy pimped house. Or, those little penguin-ball things from Yoshi's Island. You could bounce on them AND spit them at shit and make it die.

OHHHH! I just remembered! Those crazy-ass triceritopses on wheels in Megaman X-2(3?). They were on that crazy crocodile guy's level.

Face it, DOOM 2 had all the really cool bad guys. The Mancubus in particular rocked out in a thunderstorm. Big, fat, fireball-pumping, took more firepower than Arnie's fired off in his entire career to bring down.

Oh, and manhacks are indeed pretty funky. ESPECIALLY in Garry's Mod, where you can just spawn active manhacks and stick them to stuff using an adapted gun. I once made a huge long manhack tentacle that hunted me around the map.

then I stuck detonation charges and exploding barrels to it at regular intervals, and blew it up. MAJOR chuggage ensued as my computer calculated the motion of a few thousand chunks of debris, it rocked.

I love the fact that any time you found a room with an insane surplus of goodies in any Doom game you just know those fuckers are going to through something insane at you.

Man, that damn ogre with the chain saw arm and grenade launcher though.  I still hear the "dink, dink, dink" of the grenades bouncing around.

Hell yes. SS rocks. I happen to prefer the Lava Golems, because they make babies, and where theres lava golems, theres bound to be at least 3 waves of bombers, 5 waves of skele warriors, a few waves of AT-ATs, scorpions, and quite a few bulls

I remember the Marines from the original AvP, and how shit-scared they were when they faced down a xenomorph (ie. me). They were cool. So were the synthetics, cos you could rip one of their arms off and they would either keep firing with with their right arm if you took out their left, or draw a pistol with their left if you took the right. It was funny watching them reload one-handed.

Yes, I was a sadistic alien.

I had a lot of fun with the Hunters from the Halo games. Huge aliens with heavy armor, a fuel-rod gun, and the fact that they always work in pairs made for some great battles on the higher difficulties.

Resident Evil 1: The Hunter.

Those things used to scare the CRAP out of me.  You'd hear them walking off-frame, and hissing... and you knew that if you didn't time things right, they could take your head off with one swing (regardless of full health).

Damn, I'm going through the remake of RE, and I haven't seen the hunters yet.

I would say the best cannon fodder type guy is the head bug infested guys from RE4. Damn, the first time I blew off one of their heads and I nearly got killed by a slicing, I nearly pissed myself.

i've always been partial to Velius from FFTA, mostly for the name, but also for a lot of the dialogue.  for FPS, i think probably the new imps from Doom3... i was actually SCARED by some of the instances of imp attacks, and that's saying something 'cause i don't scare easily at all.

I would have to agree to the super-mutants in Fallout -- they sort of pop up at the right time and make you feel like a girly man again. Same thing with the dudes in power armour (or whatever it was called). I can remember the first time I finally confronted a gang of them and they melted me with their plasma rifles before I even got a chance to wet my pants.

The fetishes in DII were also extremely hilarious. First time I encountered them I burst out laughing at them as they swarmed me. They had me chopped up and on my way to the cooking pot after about three seconds. Devious little bastards, that.
