GOOD hip-hop/rap
applecart:
It seems silly to relate to a whole crew (and that sort of devotion seems like a necessity), but there are always standout artists.
I mostly hate the Def Jux folk, but Cannibal Ox's album is absolutely fantastic. So are El-p's beats for the most part.
I can't stand Sage Fran or Buck65 but their producers (some Anticon blokes and Sixtoo) are awesome. So perhaps check out the instrumentals.
EPMD is amazing always, but also check out Gravediggaz and Das EFX.
Old Busta Rhymes still rules hard.
The Soul Junk crew do some very awesome things with hip hop sensibilities. Kind of like Anitcon's Odd Nosdam thing but much more surface noise and more competent experimentation (they love jesus to boot).
Quannum: Usually awesome. Sometimes cheeeeesey.
New Stuff: Med, Daedelus, Busdriver, Diverse, Bigg Jus, prefuse 73
Okay.

That's because, though I like Odd Nosdam's production, Doseone (ESPECIALLY Doseone) and Why? are subpar MC's who seem more interested in creating lyrical collages than in actually working out a solid flow. It's like listening to the asylum scrawlings of a schizophrenic over perfectly produced beats, though if their intent is to irritate the hip-hop fan they're succeeding quite well.
As far as "GOOD" hip-hop goes:
KRS-One has fallen off in recent years. Ever since he did that BS spoken word for Funkmaster Flex and that collaboration with Goldie, he's become something of a parody of himself. That doesn't detract from his earlier work though.
I'm confused about why Independent, Non-radio hip-hop is generally viewed as "Good", while someone like Missy Elliot, Timbaland, Kanye West or even Eminem, despite having the respect of the entire hip-hop community, is considered "bad." I think that, much like the "definition of indie" thread, quality can't always be determined by how mainstream or not an artist is.
McTaggart:
It's purely because (for me) I like listening to the indie/nonradio kinda stuff more. I'd also like to point out that purely because it's independant or not well known doesn't mean it's good.
