Which Record?
« on: 29 Jul 2005, 16:29 »

Which record should I get. Haha, I can't decide. I'm more with a tie with Mogwai and Pelican. But you tell me what you think :)

Godspeed You Black Emperor - Yanqui U.X.O.

Explosions In The Sky - Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place

Pelican - Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw

Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People

None of them. Instead, rush out to your local internets and purchase this:

The Residents - Third Reich N' Roll

You'll so totally thank me for it. It rules. It's basically like all the Post-Rock or whatever above you want to call it, except way more interesting and awesome. THen, after it, you can buy every other single thing the Residents have done since 1960 something.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Just to add a little more knowledge about it, They basically take a bunch of really popular tunes in the 60's (when the record was made, of course) and cover them in the weirdest, strangest ways imaginable. and, if you want original music by them, I heartily reccomend their albums Not Available, Eskimo, Duck Stab/Buster and Glen, Meet the Residents, Freak Show, or their latest record, Animal Lover, to name a few, although I'd reccomend going with Third Reich N' Roll, Animal Lover, or Duck Stab/Buster and GLenn to start.

EDIT: Also, I just checked out your little PV thing (I don't think you're allowed to have pictue sigs, but wait till someone more important tells you). neat stuff.

My vote goes to Explosions in the Sky, that's an awesome album.

I have the top and bottom.  Some people don't think that was a very good godspeed but I still liked it.  So I do not regret getting either but I can't speak for the other ones.

If you don't already have Come On Die Young, purchase that instead of Happy Songs...

i think that you should maybe listen to samples of all of them and make a decision yourself instead of looking to us for validation.  it's a novel idea, but maybe it might just work!

As far as I can see it's all quality stuff, granted I haven't heard Pelican or Explosions In The Sky, but heard good of them. But if you haven't got anything by Mogwai and GYBE!, then I suggest buying their earlier work, Mogwai Young Team(personally I like Rock Action better, but Young Team is the place to begin I think) and Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to the Heavens, and get even older and buy Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada or buy their first.

But as far I can see you can buy any of them, solid stuff...

What's the best godspeed album in your opinion?

F#A# and Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas To Heaven are the best points in GY!BE's catalogue in my opinion. Make your own choices. Any of those should provide you with a good instrumental rock fix, though personally I've always been underwhelmed by explosions in the sky.

I own all these albums, and I HIGHLY recommend you buy The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place. It is perfect. You should also check out their 2nd album, it's called Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever.

Now on the subject of GY!BE, to me, their best album is Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. That's not to say that F#A#(infinity) isn't great either. You can't go wrong with either one.

Yanqui U.X.O is GY!BE's weakest album. Pelican are good, but I'd get Australasia instead. You can't go wrong with EITS. That album is fantastic. As for Mogwai...I've never been a fan. But if you were to pick a Mogwai album I'd go for 'Come on Die Young' instead.

Never thought about it; I like them all and I have not listened to much of em in a while so I could not say right now.  I may agree with kid Amnesiac.  But yeah, listen to samples, that's what I do.
