There are a lot of bands that I hear mentioned, and I always think "Why have I never heard this? It just seems like a standard."

The only one I can think of immediately (because I saw it in a lot of the favorite albums thread) is Slint. Which is really weird, considering that Spiderland is one of my roommate's favorite albums ever. Tomorrow I need to ask to borrow it.

When I reflect on it, I don't think I've actually consciously heard a Megadeth song ever. Exodus neither come to think of it.

Of course, tonnes of bands outside my most loved genres, which I've never really felt the inclination to look into are probably regarded as standards, but I simply don't like the look of when seeing who they're compared to/have inspired or what they're supposed to sound like, or because I frankly can't be pooped. These include Fugazi, Explosions in the Sky, ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of the Dead (apart from 1 sample), Sleater-Kinney, Guided By Voices, The Pixies, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Jawbreaker, Pavement and probably a good few others.

A lot of old bands, though I am mostly talking about albums here, including Pink Floyd, Joy Division, New Order, Ramones, The Cure, The Sex Pistols, Television, Cocteau Twins, Sonic Youth(other than EVOL and Sonic Nurse), metal, classical etc.
Among newish "hip" stuff, there is The Arcade Fire, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Slint, Will Oldham's Palace stuff, Joanna Newsome, that band Hope Sandoval was in, CocoRosie etc.

The last one I really regret, sounds like good stuff...

Where to start.

DISCLAIMER: I've only been listening to decent music for two or three years. I live in Australia so people you've all heard to death might not even have been played here.

Pavement
Cursive
Mr Bungle (I was just about to buy an album from these guys yesterday, but then I saw Four Tet's Rounds album. Got that instead)
Frank Zappa
Any decent amount of Captain Beefheart
Explosions in the Sky
Sigur Ros
Slint
Built to Spill
Joy Division
Dinosaur Jr
Godspeed You Black Emperor
Fugazi
The Books

Thats the start of the list anyway...

I don't listen to radio and I'm pretty suspicious of the British music press (seems to be a permanent "this week's rooster is next week's feather duster" thing going on over there), so most of the hot young things that come out of Britain at any given time I haven't heard.  I was watching Rage on A.B.C. T.V. last weekend and heard the Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, and Maximo Park for the first time.  I won't state my opinions for fear of derailing the thread.

all standards that i don't really know much or anything about

Hmm... where to start...

Minor Threat and Rites of Spring (though I'm working on those)
Interpol
Sonic Youth
Cursive
Joy Division

I can't think of any others, but there is a very long list of bands I should like (apparently) but that I hate with an intense passion or that I just find plain boring. In the first category, I could mention Einstürzende Neubauten und Rammstein (who get a prize for retarded lyrics) and in the second one Kraftwerk.
Oh, actually, I hate most of the German music scene.
Also, DFA1979, simply because everything DFA1979 do, Lightning Bolt can do a bazillion times better.

I've only heard a few tunes of Sufjan Stevens. Le Tigre, Les Savvy Fav, um... The White Stripes.

There's a lot of bands that people bring up a lot that I never get around to listening to. It's sort of but I'm non-conformist, but I'm not bringing that up to be cool, it's a part of myself I wish I could get over actually. I usually come around eventually and find that the stuff is awesome.

This is stuff I'd like to hear but haven't gotten around to yet.
Pretty much all jazz (Did order some Miles Davis but they were out)
Pink Floyd's first album
Faust
Popol Vuh
Ash Ra Temple
Boredoms
Devo (cept for an old single of my moms)
Fushitsusha/Keiji Haino
High Rise
Boris
Throbbing Gristle
Einstuzende neubauten
13th Floor Elevators
Pretty deficient in classical though I do like Arvo Part a lot

I'll be getting Trout Mask Replica in the mail sometime this week so I'm looking forward to that.

Man, I wish I had known that a week ago when I was putting together your mix.  :)

Its a hard thing to do.  Listen to all these bands that is.  and if you are a purist and actually go out and buy the albums (what a concept!), there is a certain amount of fiscal committment involved.  There is also the sheer quantity of music old and new out there.  It can become a chore at times trying to track stuff down.  I know whenever I hear an older band, or a band that has been awhile and I just haven't heard, I often think "How come I've never listened to them before?"  I also do that with CDs in my collection that I listen to rarely.  I'll give it a whirl and remember how much I enjoy the CD and say "How come I don't listen to this more?"

I was pretty much only thinking of old bands. I doubt anyone will give a shit about bands like Bloc Party in a year, and in three years no one will give a shit about The Arcade Fire.

Jawbreaker and Sonic Youth are a couple of the others that I've never really heard, except maybe in passing, despite having several friends who are in love with Sonic Youth.

Well, I gave Mogwai a pretty decent try, and based on how little I was into that decided that post-rock probably wasn't my thing. I thought it was gonna be like a lighter and less fuzzy instrumental version of Electric Wizard, and, well, it weren't. Others variously I've seen no interest in, or have been generally dissuaded by bands they're supposed to have inspired (ie for Fugazi). I remember thinking Sleater-Kinney sounded reasonably interesting, but couldn't be arsed.

Wow. A lot of those bands mentioned here are bands you SHOULD have heard. It's surprising. I'm not trying to bring anyone down, or say they suck because they haven't heard some of these bands, but yeah some of you should DEFINITELY check out Jawbreaker.

If any of you have soulseek ( www.slsknet.org ) I have a lot of these bands, my slsk SN is "mahlon" just PM me on there and i will add you to my list.

I haven't heard Slint either! Maybe i'll get them now.

My parents got me into Genesis, Pink Floyd, Stiff Little Fingers, The Sex Pistols, The Cure, Bob Dylan, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Johnny Cash and Jon Otway. I never actually bought an album till I was like 14 because I was too busy working through their vinyl collection.

@Trollstormur: Folkemon is a doozy. Tbh though, I do tend to personally forget just how long it took for me to get into Skyclad. But no, Folkemon is a great album. It shows off all their best sides, and has no really duff tracks, although Deja-Vu Ain't What it Used to Be isn't that sizzling. For a metalhead I would probably have recommended the face-removing might of their first (Thrash metal) album 'Wayward Sons of Mother Earth', or one of the more subsequent albums from that, especially Prince of the Poverty Line, which is probably their angriest and bleakest album.

But no, actually, all their albums are 'effing cool. Even the ones without Martin Walkyier are pretty ok, but, well, it just ain't the 'clad.

Everyone here whos hasn't heard Explosions In The Sky... should.
I highly reccommend the album How Strange, Innocence. It's majestic and cinematic and triumphant and beautiful and definitely worth the time.

Godspeed, however, I can't heartily reccommend. Listening to any one Godspeed song is a time investment (think 20 mins or so) and I don't know that you'd get much return on that 20 mins. I sometimes listen to them while drawing or reading, just cos it's good background music, but I don't know that I would actually listen to them for the sake of listening to them.

I'd reccommend Remains for anyone trying to get into Joy Division. It's a pretty good collection of their stuff.

For the Ramones, get Mania. It's likely the only Ramones album you'll ever need if you're not obsessed.

The Books are absolutely amazing. Check out The Lemon Of Pink.

Built To Spill - There's Nothing Wrong With Love

Cursive - The Ugly Organ

Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights. Also: "The Specialist" and "Song Seven" (B-Sides). Antics is alright, but Bright Lights is the best.

...

As for me, I'd like to hear some Fugazi. Mabye some MF Doom, and definitely Dirty Three. I've heard a bit of Dirty Three and really liked it.

Fugazi used to be one of those bands I had never checked out properly. I only got into them about two years ago, and now they are one of my favorite bands, which sometimes REALLY FUCKING PISSES ME OFF, because I saw them live about 5 or 6 years ago, and totally did not appreciate it at all.

Cat Power is a must listen. Chan Marshall's voice is loverly.

I listened to a Dinosaur Jr. album and I didn't get why they're hyped so much as one of the biggest indie bands. They just sounded dull.

TV On The Radio is excellent.

The Fiery Furnaces are challenging. Blueberry Boat is weird and quirky and youthful and complex and sometimes it's just plain fucked up, but if you approach it without any expectations, I think you can definitely love it.

I love the title track.

Skibas: I envy you the fact that you have yet to experience your first time listening to Marquee Moon.  It's gonna change your life!  As for Cat Power, my first recommendation has always been and always will be Moon Pix.  If "Metal Heart" doesn't make you weak at the knees, I don't know what will.

Kid Modernist: have a listen to "Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side" by the Magnetic Lovers.  Please.  It'll put a big dumb ol' smile on your face!  And then rush out and buy 69 Love Songs.

"Metal Heart! Ticking time bombs! Metal Heart! Unplugged they're dying!" ? No, I suppose not. I've got a track by Cat Power and I actually thought they were pretty good, reminded me of my beloved :Of The Wand And The Moon: a bit. Anyone know any more decent stuff like that or Backworld that I haven't heard?

My friend invited me to the Unicorns show when they were here, but I felt like I shouldn't go if I hadn't heard at least one song! :S

That's really too bad since they broke up.  Still, you should check them out.

The first fiery furnaces did not give back what their live show does that made me love it but I have not heard much of the latest.

Cat Power I only have the cd you are free which is not the deepest music in the world but still it is enjoyable stuff.

I saw TV on the radio play.  So many of the songs same thing, driving me nuts.  Their one white guy plays the same screechy guitar part on almost all the songs.  It is good for those who like the kind of mood they put out but for me...just gah I wanted it to end.

I myself need to hear more explosions in the sky.  I only heard short samples and from that I was not entirely impressed but maybe I need to hear more.  The last interpol, but I dunno.  What was on the radio was kind of meh.  I know there is more, just can't think of any right now.

ANN BERRETA

If more punk bands tried to be Ann Beretta rather than say, Rancid; the genre would be full of a lot more quality bands. Their most recent stuff (three chord revolution) is one of the best straight-up punk records I've heard in a while. The one before it (New Union Old Glory) reminds me of the clash somewhat with the diversity going through the songs. One of my favourites.

I also noticed:
Most of QC's recommended listening list.
Actually, I've only listened to mlusky and Do Make Say Think (saw both of them live too), The Notwist, Blood Brothers, Isis, Faraquet and Mogwai to a decent extent.

when I saw Ann Berreta in 99 or 2000, they threw firecrackers and bottle rockets into the pit. Fun times.

My list is...
Pink Floyd (like so many other lists)
Snow Patrol
Architecture in Helsinki
Sigur Ros
Led Zeppelin
Album Leaf
some Interpol

Good Lord. I really shouldn't be saying anything but that makes me so sad! The Album Leaf is A MUST.  In a Safe Place is one of my absoulte favourite albums. As for Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here are essentials. I stole that record from my dad and never gave it back, hehe. Snow Patrol's nothing too special, but I do like their stuff, very relaxing. Also, although Sigur Ros DO sound like whale's trying to find a mate, they are totally awesome, and I love having them on as ambiance music.

EDIT: Aw, I just imagined Harry all punk rock-ed out in his slighty younger days. This is totally adorable.

I prefer their first two albums, The Pipers at the Gates of Dawn and A Saucerful of Secrets. Waay trippier and LSD fueled, although Wish You Were Here was ace too.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Syd Barret is definitely one of my favourite clinically insane musicians.

I've gotta say I'm a big fan of Floyd. They didn't really get crap until the nineties. When I was 13, I was all about lying on my bed listening to Echoes and reading Philip Jose Farmer novels whilst I tried to imagine how awesome sex and drugs must be.
