It's just that most of the bands you mentioned there suck. Especially Franz Ferdinand.

Oh well. Just trying to say there are good bands there. And I like a lot of them (please dont hate me, everyone) and to be honest I don't think they're over-hyped. I haven't really seen any hype.* Especially for Montana Pete. No-one knows who they are.

Love from Katie.

Dude! (Yulquen) is their most relaxing for realz. It's like someone got all the awesome ambience of SAWII and compressed it into one song. <3

Anyway, I want to second the Faust request. I've only got Faust So Far, and it has cunningly burnt its awesome into my mind without me really noticing. Especially "it's a rainy day, sunshine girl". Damn it's good. Other than that one album though, I don't know shit, so help!

Hey Spaceman Spiff please be nice to the newbies
Not everyone knows music that well. But you are right I think all bands in this thread should have more then one album released. And I going to see the Kaiser Chiefs tonight.

Tom

P.S Leave Biffy Clyro for me when I come back I might do Belle and Sebastian and Franz Ferninand if I'm feeling generous

You do Biffy first. I checked out your website and you're going to see them in Dec (jealous) I have also relised that my copy of Blackened Sky has broken' down today.(bugger) also i don't own The Vertigo of Bliss. So KoasPilot you first.
To Spacespiff who mentioned Aerogramme as one of his favourite bands from Scotland have you checked out a album called The Suffolk Explosion it was produced by the lead singer of Aerogramme - Really good album.

Well, since no-one else has taken a crack at these guys I figure I might as well.

Band Name: The Locust

Genre: Contentious one that. Safest just to call them punk or hardcore, and avoid all use of the word grind.

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 8

Best Album: Either Plaguesoundscapes or the Man Is The Bastard Noise split

Songs:
- Best All Around: See, this doesn't really work for The Locust. I mean, it's not like there's a great variety on offer.
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': Ditto for this quesion. Just listen to a few tracks and you'll see what I mean.
- Most Relaxing: Flight of the Wounded Locust I believe it's called. I think it's on the Arab On Radar split.
- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: I seem to remember seeing a video for Listen, The Mighty Ear Is Here once.
- Songs That Best Represent The Band: You can pretty much pick any at random, apart from remixes or the very very occasional bit of meandering oddness
- Most Entertaining Song: The one that has the title you personally find the most amusing. Personally I'm a fan of Gluing Carpet To Your Genitals Does Not Make You A Cantaloupe.

- Bands Like This Band: There are a million knock-offs doing the rounds, the most famous of which being Daughters. But if you want someone doing a similar thing just as well then look to Peel favourites Trencher or even Whores Whores Whores who are much better than their name would suggest.

- Coolest Thing About This Band: When they signed to Anti all the cool kids started saying they were shite because some people without the 'right' record collections had started buying their stuff, so now I won't run into some stuck-up dick wearing the same shirt I am.

Somebody do Venom, Saxon, Edge of Sanity, or King Diamond.

It will most likely be Khar for all of them, but I'm just tossing some names I'm tangentally familiar with out there.

Also, curse this forum for not having the strikeout tags.

Band Name: Venom

Genre: Old-School Black Metal

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 9

Best Album: Black Metal

Songs:
- Best All Around: 'Black Metal'
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': 'Bloodlust'
- Most Relaxing: Not really something Venom do. But try 'Buried Alive' or 'Warhead'.
- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: Both Countess Bathory and Black Metal are covered to all hell
- Songs That Best Represent The Band: 'Black Metal'

- Bands Like This Band: old Bathory, Sodom, Mercyful Fate, Bulldozer, Celtic Frost, Angel Witch

- Coolest Thing About This Band: They invented Black Metal, and wrote it's theme tune. You must hear 'Black Metal' by Venom. Some prefer their first album. This is irrelevant. Get it now.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Band Name: Edge of Sanity

Genre: Progressive/Melodic Death Metal

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 9.5

Best Album: Purgatory Afterglow

Songs:
- Best All Around: 'Enigma'
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': 'Disrupting the Inhabitants'
- Most Relaxing: 'Sacrificed' or 'Losing Myself'
- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: ...nah
- Songs That Best Represent The Band: 'Crimson'

- Bands Like This Band: Opeth (a bit), Gallery-era Dark Tranquillity, some At The Gates, Elegy-era Amorphis, Reasonably unique though.

- Coolest Thing About This Band: The creative play-off between Dan Swano and Dread Axellson creates a band influenced by both classic Entombed and The Sisters of Mercy, at the same time. They were also, as far as my exhaustive research tells, the first band to ever use clean vocals in death metal. Pretentious greatness. Nice lyrics as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Band Name: King Diamond

Genre: Heavy mothertrucking Metaaaaaaaaaal

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 9

Best Album: Abigail

Songs:
- Best All Around: 'The Trees Have Eyes'
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': 'Waiting'
- Most Relaxing: 'Funeral'
- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: again, nah.
- Songs That Best Represent The Band: 'No Presents For Christmas'

- Bands Like This Band: Mercyful Fate (obviously), Judas Priest, Three Inches of Blood, Running Wild.

- Coolest Thing About This Band: KING MOTHERFUCKING DIAMOND. And why, because ...*DUN DUN DUN, DUH DUH DUH, DUN DUN DUN, DUH DUH DUH, DUDDLY-DUDDLY-DUDDLY...* He was born in the cemataaaaaary, Under the sign of the MOOOOOOOOOOOON...

And unlike Biffy Clyro, I've actually managed to see them live.

And as for calling Daughters another rip-off of The Locust - I would be careful about that. Their music is quite a bit different and also, As The Sun Sets had been around for a bit before that too.

Band Name: Biffy Clyro

Genre: Rock/Post-Hardcore

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 10

Best Album: Infinity Land...it captures their sound best I feel

Songs:
- Best All Around: 'strung to your ribcage'
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': 'A Day Of...' or 'Stress on the Sky'
- Most Relaxing: 'Scary Mary', 'A 'Diary of Always' or 'Breathher' (a b-side)

Bands Like This Band: Hell is for Heroes and Succioperro at a push. They've got the loud/quiet/loud/quiet thing that Nirvana had too.

Coolest Thing About This Band: They've gained a fanatic fanbase through a lot of hardwork, a relentless gigging/recording schedule and an approachable manner. The friendliest guys I've met!

Band Name: Oingo Boingo (aka The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo or just as Boingo)

Genre: New-Wave (they are basically, the SoCal Devo)

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 10

Best Album: Only A Lad

Songs:
- Best All Around: Nasty Habits
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': maybe Fool's Paradise or No One Lives Forverer
- Most Relaxing: I find that On The Outside can be pretty relaxing at times, but they have a pretty up-beat repetoire...
- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: Dead Man's Party or Little Girls
- Song That Best Represents The Band: Little Girls or Weird Science

Bands Like This Band: Devo especially. Soundtracks to Tim Burton movies are basically all done by ex-singer Danny Elfman, so you can hear similarities.

Coolest Thing About This Band: They are pretty much the perfect band. Solid songwriting, good musicianship, great lyrics sung great, and a kick-ass attitude towards music and performance.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure I did this already. Also, Kai, give me PRAXIS!

Hmmm...
I been having some problem logging in for a while but I'm back.
Anyway I'm going to be starting a student radio show soon and will have a few interviews with bands and when I see the interview I'm going to see if they will fill in this with their own band. Ha ha

Anyway one of the interviews I'm trying to set up is up is going to be Biffy Clyro so if I get them I would like to see how they themselves will fill out the questions.

Also KaosPilot you're a Succioperro fan. I now offically love you.!

Time for a Better Description of Blur

Band Name: Blur

Genre: Brit Pop/Psychedelic Pop(Leisure, Modern Life is Rubbish, Parklife, The Great Escape); Expiremental, Indie, Ambient (Blur, 13, Think Tank)

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 9

Best Album: 13

Songs:
- Best All Around: "Out Of Time"
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': "Entertain Me"
- Most Relaxing: "Trimm Trabb"
- Most Played: "Song 2"
- Song That Best Represents The Band:"Parklife"(Britpop Era);"Beetlebum"(Not Britpop Era)

Bands that sound like them:

Coolest Thing About This Band: They progressed and improved themselves every album they made, unlike their "rivals" Oasis.  They never seem content to stick with a sound and just make a bunch of albums that sound exactly the same.

Time for another unprompted review!

Band Name: Dead Meadow

Genre: Psychedelic something.  I'm not quite sure what.  But very drugged-out.

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 8.9

Best Album: Hard to say ... personally, I like the self-titled debut the most, but I can't honestly say that it's better than any of the others.  People on this forum will probably like "Feathers," their most recent album, the most.

Songs:
- Best All Around: "Sleepy Silver Door"
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': yeesh ... I'm going with "Good Moanin'"
- Most Relaxing: "At the Edge of the Wood," or "Drifting Down Streams" if that even counts as a song.
- Most Played: I've no idea.
- Song That Best Represents The Band: "The Breeze Always Blows," maybe ... listen to anything and you'll probably have a good idea of what to expect.

Bands that sound like them: I can't think of any.  Half the time, the guitars are barely recognizable as such.  The only band that sounds anything like them that I can think of is Colour Haze, and nobody knows who the hell they are either.

Coolest Thing About This Band: More than any other band I've probably ever listened to, their songs are soundscapes.  The sound, to me, actually evokes a feeling of being somewhere else.  It's really weird.  Just find something by them and listen to it.  It sounds like what a wizard's dream would look like.

Okay, I will review myself.

Band Name: Halo of Flies

Genre: Dark Ambient/Post-Industrial/Folktronica/Soundtrack

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): Can't really do this.

Best Album: The Blasted Heath

Songs:
- Best All Around: Solar Symphony
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': St. Anthony's Fire
- Most Relaxing: Stormclouds and Skrealings
- Most Played: According to Last.fm, A Sonnet to Diana.
- Song That Best Represents The Band: In Thunder, Lightning or in Rain.

Bands that sound like them: No-one, intentionally.

Coolest Thing About This Band: Me!

Band Name: Beck (full name: Bek David Campbell or Beck Hansen)

Genre: alternative-rock (it fluctuates album-to-album)

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 8.5

Best Album: Odelay

Songs:
- Best All Around: a lot to choose from; Devils Haircut is a contender
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': Minus
- Most Relaxing: Hollow Log
- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: Loser
- Song That Best Represents The Band: Diamond Bollocks (extreme genre-switching madness)

Bands Like This Band: Ween, for their sense of humor and genre-hopping abilities; the Flaming Lips, for their experimentalist streak and stunning pop sensibilities; Gary Wilson, for the creepy white-guy almost-soul singer vibe

Coolest Thing About This Band: no two of his albums sound alike (and I tend to stab people who think Guero is a rehash of Odelay

Hell, it fluctuates within albums...  I mean, Odelay is the most maddening collection of genres in a single place that I've ever seen.

As for best song, I definately wouldn't consider Devil's Haircut, though I suppose I can kind of see it.

Anyway, I'd love to see some Frank Zappa.

Finally, a band I can do!

Band Name: Frank Zappa/Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention

Genre: Insane Experimental Comedy Rock

Your Rating Of Them (1-10): 9

Best Album: He put out so fucking many this is really tough, but I'd have to say Apostrophe.

Songs:
- Best All Around: That's tough, but I'm gonna say I'm the Slime.
- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': The Black Page
- Most Relaxing: I wouldn't call anything by Zappa relaxing, really.
- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: This one's a bit of a stretch, but possibly Don't Eat the Yellow Snow.
- Song That Best Represents The Band: Joe's Garage

Bands Like This Band: I really don't know any artists that are quite like Zappa. People with a wider taste in music than me might be able to help more with that.

Best Thing About this Band: I would say that it's like Weird Al with guitar solos, but that wouldn't be giving Zappa nearly enough credit. When I say experimental, I mean fucking experimental. If you don't like some pretty far-out stuff, then steer clear of this. If you can get into that sort of thing though, this shit is awesome.

Dammit, someone beat me to it. Although I'm goin to have to disagree with you on the best album, I think "We're Only in it for the Money" or "Hot Rats" kinda win, and because for some reason it made me really sad, his last album, "Civilization: Phase III".

Also, Beefheart is usually compared to Zappa alot (They did a couple of things together and were "On and off" friends.) The Residents are heavily influenced by them. In the vein of randomness, alot of Mike Patton stuff is sorta similar. Also, Buckethead. Seriously. Alot of Ls Claypool's prjects are in the sort of "strange music" vein as well, but not to the extent. You'd also probably really like both Edgar Varese and John Cage if you like Zappa; THey're both modern day experimental composers (Varese is really the person that got Zappa into the weird music in the first place). ANd, if you can find anything by them, Both Renaldo and the Loaf and Snakefinger are great.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I honestly couldn't get into Hot Rats, and I've never heard We're Only in it for the Money all the way through.

Well, with so many albums of his, and all of them being so different, there's alot of room for different opinions. Apostrophe was a great album (And the first album I got). I do reccomend actually getting that one first, too.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Steve Vai is heavily influenced by Zappa, because he played in Zappa's band before he went solo. His early stuff is especially Zappa-esque, musically. Obviously, since it's instrumental it doesn't have the comedy aspect.

And the best Zappa song in terms of humor is Valley Girl. That song made me fall over the first time I heard it.

Storm Rider asked about Ayreon in the guitarists thread. Bare in mind that as of writing this I don't have 'Into the Electric Castle' which I've heard good stuff about.

Band name: Ayreon

Genre: Progressive rock/metal

Your rating of them: 8-9

Best album: The Human Equation (definitely the best intro album anyway).

Songs:
- Best All Around: 'Day Sixteen: Loser'
[/i]'

- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': 'Chaos'

- Most Relaxing: 'Carried by the Wind'

- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: 'Day Eleven: Love'

- Song That Best Represents The Band: Really impossible to chose. There's a very varied sound. I suppose something like 'The First Man on Earth' maybe.

Bands like this band: At various times they resemble Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, Wuthering Heights, Dream Theatre, Nightingale and Spock's Beard.

Coolest thing about this band: Definitely the multiple vocalists. Each album has up to twenty different guest vocalists playing roles in a conceptual story, who have at times included Bruce Dickinson, Mikeal Akerfeldt  and Devin Townsend. They're also, of course, sci-fi fantasy story driven, which is darn cool.

And for free, here's one of their side project Star One, whom I prefer:

Band name: Star One

Genre: Space Metal

Your rating of them: 10

Best album: Space Metal

Songs:
- Best All Around: 'Intergalactic Space Crusaders'
[/i]'

- Loudest/Hardest/Most Rockin': 'Lift Off/Set Your Controls'

- Most Relaxing: Star One rock out 24/7, but I suppose 'Starchild (remix)' would count.

- Most Played/A song by them you may have heard: You haven't, you poor bastard.

- Song That Best Represents The Band: 'Lift Off/Set Your Controls'

Bands like this band: 100% hypersonic x-wing dogfighting progressive Hawkwind worship of the awesome variety.

Coolest thing about this band: Urm, Anthony Lucassen, Dan Swano, Floor Jansen and Dave Brock on ONE ALBUM? YES PLEASE. Also, they did the greatest medley ever, heavy versions of Hawkwind classics with DAVE FUCKING BROCK on vocals. It's the closest you can get to overdosing on hallucinogenic drugs without actually, you know, doing it.
