Google has an IM service now. You use your gmail address as your screenname.

Google has their own windows client, and you can use it with the other clients listed there for other platforms. Simply click to get setup instructions.

Aren't the robowebs fun!

The client is pretty ass, and the lack of features is also pretty ass.  And can people stop using the goddamn acronym VoIP all the time?  Voice over networks has been used for a long time, especially by gamers.  Stop acting like it's something hugely new.  Fuckers.

I'm using it through GAIM at work and through Adium at home.  It's simply Jabber.

Nih: Voice over networks has been around a long time, but now it's the Next Big Thing in telephoney, and it's finally commercially viable as a service.  Additionally, it's not something that was accessable to a lot of people, for the general population, it is something new.

That's why people talk about it.

I'm using it from work via Trillian.  Whee.  It's just Jabber.  The Google client is a piece of ass, though.  My real complaint was that far too many people have their tongues right up Google's ass, licking for that next piece of corn.  The client doesn't compete because it is technically not worthy.  I've had far too many people go off the deep end because Google cannot, IS NOT, allowed to do any wrong.

Pfft.

I remember using Roger Wilco five or six years ago.  Quality was pretty decent at that time.  I don't know, it's not a huge leap.  Now that it has an acronym, whoop-d-whoop.  VoIP has been around for a long time...  I'll start doing my whoops when proper streaming video becomes available.  Fuck digital cable, fuck satellite; I want to watch new shit the second it becomes available, whenver I want to.  Currently, just not possible.

Finally, neomang5, I'm not a mod, I'm an administrator.  Oh, and I'm a God.  So I won already.

Charming image that...

I've been trying to convince it to work through Gaim but it doesn't want to work. Not sure why as I don't actually know anyone who uses it. Why can't we just standardise this already?

I apologize for being so crude; when I get my rant worked up, I do not try to tame it on the way out.

Standards in the IM world?  That'd be worth seeing.  Somehow I don't expect the large companies to do that, though.

nih, to be fair it IS only the first beta, gmail was missing some major core features when it started too.  It'll be interesting to see how they develop the client.

Although personally i'm more waiting for them to publish the specs for their voice chat stuff so it can get plugged into gaim.

It IS their first beta.  And it's not something I'd really use on a day-to-day basis.  Yet everybody persists in singing their praises of how KICK ASS it is.  Please.  I'd use a command line chat client first...

Well, to be fair, my mate who told me to put it on asked me what I thought and I thought to myself, 'I can't stand to insult google', so I said, "well, errr, it's certainly minimalist". That said, every google product ever spends forever in beta, I'm sure it's gonna get better.

Some of their products never get touched again; some never make it out of beta.  Their approach is to just dump wads of things on the market and achieve dominance that way.

how can you trash on a clean, stripped down client that dumps to XML?

some of us dont want to even touch MSN anymore. We dont do Webcam, and animated typing is retarded. Personally, I think this is a step in the right direction.

also Threatis [at] Gmail{doot}com if anyone cares.

Because Trillian is probably the best client I've used since day one?  It logs everything the way I want to, looks the way I want it to, and talks to all protocols.

trillian is crap. It suffers feature bloat, just like AIM, MSN, and Yahoo messenger.

Cant you people apreciate the joys of a simple, utilitarian interface? If you need giant animated emoticons to communicate with, you probably have an IQ under 80.

For a first beta, its amazing. Say what you want about google, you cannot fault their coding.

My only complaint with GAIM is that it doesn't tell me when anybody signs on... does anybody know how to make it do that? (Besides the windoes that pop up that you need to click "Ok" on, I'm asking to figure out how to get the ones that scroll up on the side and then go back down)

You can unload a lot of shit in Trillian if you don't want to use it.  And you can skin it.  Thus, mine is fucking tiny, unlike Google.

I can fault Google all I want.  I'm not a Googlephiliac.  They don't rule the world, and I certainly don't trust them.  For a first beta, it's nothing revolutionary.  It's a Jabber client with voice capabilities.  The voice stuff is nothing new, MSN and Yahoo have had that for ages.  Trillian and GAIM can connect to Jabber servers.  Why is it so cool?  Because Google did it?  Whoop-d-shit.

Yeah! Rock on! Fuck google!

In a few years when the googlethorities take me away, I will regret that statement immensely.

The Toronto Star wrote an article about them called Googzilla.  If you get that damn sign-in form, you can login as [email protected]/public.

I've always used AIM. I tried YIM for awhile, but I've abandoned it for the time being because I have only 2 friends on there, so it's easier to just talk to them on AIM. I've never tried Trillian, but I probably never will because I don't like the way that it communicates with AIM.

As for GAIM, I'll download it just for the sake of seeing if it appeals to me, and if it does, I'll stick around awhile for the upgrades. I use google all the time, I have a gmail account, and I used their maps in the months that we didn't have an atlas in the house, so I have a pretty good impression of them. I don't necessarily consider myself a google worshipper, but you have to admit that their basic services (search, e-mail, maps) are pretty damn useful.

w00t, more Adium users! 0.85 (expected RSNŽ) will have GTalk as a separate account type. We're hoping to get stuff like gmail integration working in the future (possibly with Google's help; they've been quite nice about sending us patches to improve gtalk support).

I don't know what makes a good client; I've only ever used iChat to do AIM.  I can do voice chat, but I'd much rather type.
