Yes. That some unknown bands from elsewhere are more derserving yada yada. That's not my point. My point is that if everyone who claims to be a music geek listens to and supports their local scene A) the good music will get out there anyways and B) local music scenes in reasonably-sized cities will be good.
This isn't about "deserving." There are bands in most towns that are putting out great stuff. The music nerds like to focus on specific towns (right now, Canada in general, in the past, Seattle, and various other places) but really, there is good music almost everywhere. You just need to look for it. Assuming that there isn't going to be any good music in your town and thus separating yourself from the local music scene is not only factually wrong, but it will also discourage any musicians in your town that may not be established yet within the local scene but that are writing quality tunes.
If you want a good music culture in your town, you need to support the musicians in your town. Period. Supporting someone else's local scene won't have positive effects for your own. Period. End of story.
