Hey, I've got this thing where I listen to what my ears like!

Amazing new concept!

*guaranteed way to make sure your music doesn't become coldplay-esque watered-down whatever.

Sp2, not to start a fight, but you already have stated the obvious in this thread before, saying pretty much, supporting mainstream does not help local.  Just a reminder as I mentioned it already.

When you set up an argument, you start out with things that everyone knows to be true, then you take logical steps from there.  That is different from stating the obvious for the sake of stating the obvious.

Everyone and their mother loves independant bands.  Saying "like independant bands" here is pointless.  Plus, I could care less about whether the bands I like in general are independant or if they're signed to a big label.  However, taking the effort to support local music is something most indie kids don't do...they're more concerned with the "next big thing before it gets big."  If you want to talk about the importance of supporting independant music, fine, start your own thread.  But there is little connection between local music and independant music.

I already mentioned the connection but I don't care to argue anymore than to mention that.

Yes.  That some unknown bands from elsewhere are more derserving yada yada.  That's not my point.  My point is that if everyone who claims to be a music geek listens to and supports their local scene A) the good music will get out there anyways and B) local music scenes in reasonably-sized cities will be good.

This isn't about "deserving."  There are bands in most towns that are putting out great stuff.  The music nerds like to focus on specific towns (right now, Canada in general, in the past, Seattle, and various other places) but really, there is good music almost everywhere.  You just need to look for it.  Assuming that there isn't going to be any good music in your town and thus separating yourself from the local music scene is not only factually wrong, but it will also discourage any musicians in your town that may not be established yet within the local scene but that are writing quality tunes.

If you want a good music culture in your town, you need to support the musicians in your town.  Period.  Supporting someone else's local scene won't have positive effects for your own.  Period.  End of story.
