Garcin:

--- Quote from: Inlander ---Hasn't been released yet?  Silly foreigners, they've got it in my local record store here in Melbourne.  Same goes for Illinois with the original cover art, for that matter.
--- End quote ---

Well you're right and I was wrong, the official release date was June 28, 2005, but because the original CD run was tiny, most people are getting it now.   Or something like that.  My point is that to date, most North American fans have only heard them from downloads & at concerts.

My beef here is that basically the criterion for overrated is whether a group has been feted on 10-20 websites in the three months since 99% of indie fans had even heard of their name.  That's complete shit.  Sure Pitchfork can say beautiful things about CYHSY representing for indie because they're in the process of making it self-released and on the basis of word-of-mouth, but that's all secondary to the quality of the music -- that is to say the groovy feeling that it instills inside of you over the span of multiple listenings.

So the CD comes out, maybe they sell 60k albums if they're lucky (invisible from recording industry standards where gold is 500k, platinum is 1mm, and diamond is 10mm) and guaranteed noone will be talking about them a year from now as they work toward their next album.  Will they still be overrated then?

EDIT: Fuck, I just realized that Johnny C said everything I wanted to say but in one sentence.  I'm going to go shoot myself now.

Spirit Stereo:

--- Quote from: Spirit Stereo ---clap your hands say yeah
art brut
lcd soundsystem
pavement.

yeah.

This is a troll, or else OP genuinely believes that anything that receives a high rating from Pitchfork (and benefits from the inevitable hoopla) is overrated.  If you don't believe me check the startling correlation between Pitchfork scores and the four bands OP cited -- the first time in fact that I have seen a correlation between 8.5+ Pitchfork scores and anything else.

Anyway, I'll give OP the benefit of the doubt and call this a troll.  Doesn't mean it can't be a valuable thread.  For instance, I'm still boggling over how, when any post-rock band is always subject to a spectrum of professional reviews and indie fanbase reactions, it makes sense to call them "overrated".  Special contempt is reserved for calling Clap Your Hands Say Yeah overrated before their official album release (which yes, I know, began and was delayed . . . but still).  Overrated by whom?  Most of the indie crowd hasn't even heard of them yet!

I'm definitely not a troll.  And I love plenty of bands Pitchfork loves (see Decemberists, Sufjan, Tortoise etc.).  And CYHSY is gigantic among board-posting people.  And the album is definitely out.

And what the hell is OP?

Spirit Stereo:
Oh and not just among board-posting people, who am I kidding?  Most people are leaving after CYHSY during their sold-out tour with the National.  For real.

And they are overrated, at least in my mind, because the singer can't sing, the music is largely boring (except for a couple tracks) and they still get glowing reviews (see Metacritic).

Saturday:

--- Quote from: Bumface ---Agree with Pavement and LCD Soundsystem. Not sure about Art Brut though, plenty of people hate them to contrast those who love them.

Anthony & the Johnsons
Devendra Banhart
Joanna Newsom
Sufjan Stevens
My Bloody Valentine (good, but not as great as everyone makes out)
Sleater-Kinney

I assume we're taking U2, Coldplay etc for granted?
--- End quote ---

i agree with my bloody valentine. but the other artists i donīt think they are very 'overrated'. like "oh whoa the best guy ever!!" i think they have the promotion they deserve.

Kanno:
In defence of the arcade fire, funeral is pretty much everything it's hyped up to be.  I really didn't see the appeal at first, but then my iPod broke and the only thing I had to listen to in my car for a straight week was funeral.

Now I can't imagine passing that album by, it's bloody fucking wonderful!

Maybe some of you need to give it more time?

Oh, and Pavement is certainly overrated.  Good call with that one.
