I don't know how Radiohead can be over rated, 3 of their albums have been top notch 10/10 material.  The Bends, OK Computer and Kid A are phenominal.  And the others are far better than the majority of what is released today.  Claiming that they are over rated sounds like nothing more than a cry of "they are too popular for me to like them".

Or it's a cry of "Everyone says their material is top notch 10/10 material" when they're really just long winded and really fucking boring.

it is easy to praise them when you look at all of the shit that was making it big in the "alt-rock" market at the time The Bends and OK Computer were released.  Especially OK Computer, talk about something completely unique at the time.

People forget that there was a time when there was no Radiohead and everything had gone to shit.

Be thankfull for what you have and realise that just because you have decided to hate a band doesn't mean they have made a valuable contribution to the world of music as a whole.

Excuse me? I do believe a very good portion of my music happens to be made up of really long tracks, some up to a good hour or so. (woo for prog rock/metal and jam bands!) The problem I have with Radiohead? They're boring. Simple as that. The whiny nasal vocals, the pretty below average guitar (or lack thereof, in the case of Kid A/Amnesiac) and overall, compared to what I listen to, really boring.



Course, then again, I liked this band back when they were called the TALKING HEADS.

I honestly don't believe that Radiohead have influenced anyone of note, especially when you find out that people like Tommy Lee and Wes Borland are fans and that hasn't affected their sounds at all.

On the other hand, some people seem to hate Radiohead for the simple reason that they get press.

Not intended as a lecture. You just have to realise that for some people bands like Radiohead are an awakening to what music can be.

For me Radiohead and the Smashing Pumpkins made me realise that music was more than just what was playing on the radio.

I think Radiohead did this for a lot of people and I think that if a band can do that thats really cool.

Most of us here enjoy the obscurity of our favourite bands but without some bands making it to the mainstream would any of us have ventured out to find them?

Maybe talking heads was that band for you. I just have this urge to defend Radiohead, don't take it personally.

They havent influenced anyone I personally like, and before radiohead there were PLENTY of good bands. Perhaps you wouldnt like them... but then again you like that which I dislike in radiohead.

That joke only works when the band that they used to be called actually sounds like the band you are dissing.

Compared with what you listen to, I'd find my monotone Spanish teacher more interesting. Guess that's not a good point to make, then.

Uh yeah, Mr Greenwood can certainly jangle that guitar good. Yeah. He knows that any sort of complex bridge, solo or breakdown, unusual or sudden variance in tempo, interesting use of pedals, whammy bar or distortion, adoption of classical or hybrid styles of picking or bending, non-standard tunings etc. would basically just be masturbation with no musical worth whatsoever.

Also, it might not sell quite so many Radiohead albums.

1.  I think it's disrespectful to call someone's dislike of a band "backlash".  It assumes that they dislike the band only because they're too popular, not because they really don't like the band.  You can disagree with someone, but don't diss how the opinions come about.

2.  It's strangely cynical to assume that anyone who comes up with a vaguely contentious thread and has a low post count is a troll.  I'm not going to say it's disrespectful, because it's reasonable, but I think it's strange how message boards have evolved so that it would be reasonable for me to be a troll.

Khar has actually been damn fantastic in the last little while about not actually insulting people's tastes in music. Other people have ventured in to fill that void for him.

1. You do count as "someone," and rather politely does count as "in any context whatsoever."
2. I haven't even been a member of this forum for four months, but my claim was based on actual evidence, joke though it was. But don't take it personally; I was just poking fun and I'm sorry if it came across as rude or bad-natured. It's obvious (to me, anyway, since I haven't disclosed my musical opinions on the forum all that much) that our musical tastes are wildly dissimilar, but whatever, man. I like your cold hard metal flava, and don't let me tell you otherwise.

How can you say Sonic Youth wasn't innovative? That's just stupid. Nobody did noise like they did when they came around, at least not in the epic sense of Daydream Nation. To deny that they were an important band and then say "OMG BUTTHOLE SURFERS ACE LOL" as if you want to actually compare the two is silly in my eyes.

See I always thought the butthole surfers sort of straddled that weird line between "experimental" and "metal."  I didn't mind them so much when I was younger, but then I never went out of my way to pick up any of their albums either.  Comparing them to Sonic Youth is like comparing drywall to apples.  If you're talking experimental/noise groups being over-rated in relation to OTHER experimental/noise groups, and you're counting the butthole surfers in that category, then I have to say that the surfers are overrated compared to The Boredoms.

Merkava:  I think that it's valid to say that a band is overrated, regardless of whether or not they were innovative.  If someone listened to what Sonic Youth was trying to accomplish, and then went out and took what they learned from that and made an album that improved on the flaws, wouldn't you say that it was overall a better album, and that the original band, despite being the influence, were still sort of half-assing it?

(For the record, I happen to think Sonic Youth really grew into their sound quite well and accomplished something great in the late-80's/early 90's.  I can't believe someone would say they were overrated).

I think im going to nominate coldplay for most overrated. Theres no denying that its just boring music. Dispassionate, uncreative, and not terribly talented iether.

But they've gotten soundly whacked in the press for it (except for a couple idiot zines) so I wouldn't call it overrated.  Actually, I might call it underrated, in that they do have a couple positive qualities (none of which are the lyrics) that negative reviews tend to gloss over.

Parachutes actually got a lot of good reviews, which is when everyone starting calling them the next Radiohead. Then A Rush Of... came out, had a bunch of really boring hits, and smart people realized that hey, Coldplay kinda suck. Dumb people made sure X and Y sold a gajillion copies in its first week. So Coldplay are pretty evenly rated.
