Wait, you have enough game knowledge to be aware of Derek Smart and need a game recommendation?

The non sequitur is killin' me.

That, or you've played nothing but the listed game and Battlecruiser 3000AD at a friend's house or something.

I've played all derek smart games, they a) scare me, and b) i've been seroiuslty addicted to them, once i played universal combat for all of my three day weekend w/o sleep...and then..it crashed...and i had a nervious breakdown..Gunboyund is okay, but it never really got interested in it...UT2k4 is alright, i've seen better..and Counterstrike FTW!....if i only had a counterstrike disk...and City of heroes looks..blah...I'm thinking abut EVE online, though it's a bit old...

EVE is hella slow.  Takes weeks for shit to happen.  And it costs, because of that.

Honestly, I play some GW, CSS, FEAR.  The rest of the time goes to the Xbox.

Call of Duty 2, FEAR, and Indigo Prophecy are the best games that have come out in the past few months. Also, if you haven't played Half-Life 2 yet, what's wrong with you?!? DO IT ALREADY.

If your after something long and ponderous and massive (with lots of black and dark colours) try X3: Reunion, I'm not sure if it's out yet (I have seen torrents). Obviously I haven't played it but I doubt it'll be far off from X2: The Threat. Space-trade-combat-empire-building-exploration is always good.

I've been playing lots of old games recently.

If you want Epic, just get Homeworld.  Possibly the best single-player story arc I've yet seen in an RTS.  No other game captures the vastness of space or hits with the same emotional impact as Homeworld 1.  And the graphic design is un-frickin-believable.

If you're thinking indie, check out Tread Marks.

http://www.ldagames.com/treadmarks/

'Tis the best tank racing game ever.  Which, admittedly, isn't a very crowded genre.  Nonetheless, the sight of a T72 catching big air, or a cruise missile descending from the heavens to blow the living fuck out of some poor sap, is a truly beauteous sight.

Elsewise

Freedom Fighters
An older XBox/PS2/PC game, and really cheap these days.  The premise: The Soviets have taken over the US, and as a NYC plumber, you must rally the resistance and make New York safe for mom's apple pie, democracy, and other such shit.  This delightfully retro premise is backed up with slick comic-style graphics, seamlessly integrated squad AI, and no lack of ways to misbehave with a molotov cocktail.  Fragging commies never gets old.

Ground Control
A nifty 3D RTS that actually takes advantage of teh 3D aspect instead of being Starcraft with polys.  Instead of base building and resource management, Ground Control is almost chesslike in that it revolves around the intelligent usage of a smaller number of battlefield assets.  The graphic design is impressive; while the game is definitely low on the polys, touches such as tread marks in the sand, sprays of shell casings, and jet contrails as Aerodynes make their strafing runs are used liberally, making it an arresting experience.  GC could be described as somewhere between Close Combat, Homeworld, and Total Annihilation.

Played the HW2 demo.  I suspect that it'd be up my alley to some degree, but never got into it, really.  Ditto with Cataclysm.

guild wars!

i was just thinking of reviving the GW thread here, cause i'm back into it

(if you want a guild, try evilavatar.com)

and to be honest, if WoW isn't your thing, then guildwars likely is

and it's not exactly expensive, i got mine for less than $30 (£14) and there're no monthly fees.

The entire Homeworld series rocks. Cataclysm wasn't quite my thing, HW2 took some getting used to but I love it now (Vagyr for the win, bitches!), but the original one is still the best.

Of course, it's not as surprising of me to say that, I was active in the HW modding community for quite some time...
Now if I hadn't lost my HW classic CD...
