Female singers
sjbrot:
If you want something a little different, Hiretsukan is a hardcore group with a female vocalist. That threw me for a loop.
Also, Marianne Faithful and Controller.Controller are both pretty good.
But one of my all time favorites has to be the one-and-only PJ Harvey. The woman is a haunting presence and she caries on a friendship with Don Von Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart.
Dara:
Afrirampo
Melt-Banana
Aoki Takamasa + Tujiko Noriko
Sophie Zelmani
Rilo Kiley (Jenny Lewis is smmmmokin hot)
ObsoleteDonkey:
Bjork; check out Vespertine
Paatos; check out Kallocain
Anja Garbarek; check out Smiling and Waving
Portishead; check out Dummy
Zero 7; while not always a female singer, check out When It Falls
Praeserpium Machinarum:
Under Byen(it's danish though)
Sorten Muld(again there's a language barrier, but their singer is good)
I hear Diamanda Galás is amazing in a pretty scary way.
Eivør Palsdóttir - Krakán(likewise about the language, she sings in føroyar on that one)
Gåte(sings in norwegian)
Julie Doirón
Jomi Massage
Martina Topley-Bird(recorded with Tricky on his early albums, but was miscredited as Martine)
Mirah(because she's so damn cute)
Nina Simone
Aretha Franklin
Portishead
Beth Gibbons and Rustin' Man - Out of Season
Tina Dickow(She's called Tina Dico in England and sung on Zero 7's latest, specifically Home, but her album Notes is good. But unfortunately the new one In The Red seems to be shit :( )
Yeah Yeah Yeahs(she's manic for sure and that's exactly why she's great)
Cocteau Twins(The voice of God as one journalist said it)
Low(Mimmi Parker has nothing short of an angelic voice)
Edited since I forgot both Cocteau Twins AND Low, shame on me.
Tinjessla:
Everyone who has said Bjork and Kim Deal, i agree with a bajillion times. You should defienetly check out Kate Bush and PJ Harvey too.
