OK, I'm still loving Pinback but I have now decided that Anya Marina is my new favorate local band.  The lead singer is smoking hot and the group won the best local artist award at the 2005 San Diego Music Awards.  How cool is that?

I'm going to go see them at the Casbah tonight at 9pm and if you live in San Diego I suggest you do to (don't miss Franz Ferdinand on the 9th either) but even if you don't you can still here some of their songs at their myspace account (http://www.myspace.com/anyamarina) or at the band's website (http://www.anyamarina.com/).

Why don't you share some of your local bands so the nonlocals can learn about them?

Pictures of the band.

I hear the local band Pepper did pretty good too and got the best Alternative Rock award.

I'm always looking to plug Stood Up, Shot Down.  They're a good Ska-punk band from Arizona.  They've grown up a lot from their first record and I think their new one is going to really put them on the map... although you'll have to look really close.  http://www.stoodupshotdown.com

I'm in Denver area.  All these bands are Colorado-locals, from Ft. Collins, Boulder, or Denver.  Mostly Denver.

The Swayback

These guys are awesome.  Gothy dance punk.  Fun, lots of energy, and good music.  These guys pretty much have a strong cult following in the Denver punk scene...and with good reason.  They fucking rock.

Matson Jones

Gothy cello rock.  Some of their stuff is more punk-ish, some is more poppy.  Well written, kinda artsy, very good.

DeVotchKa

Avant Gypsy folk.  These guys are absolutely awesome.  End of story.  If you don't like these guys, you probably hate music.

Bright Channel

Very dark industrial-influenced hardcore.  Very wall-of-sound.  Like the Swayback, they have a massive cult following in town.

The Hot IQs

Happy bouncy indie rock.

These are the big 5 from my area.  There are a lot of shitty jam bands in the area, too, but fuck jam bands.  There are also some good DJs, but I couldn't name them to save my life.

I just thought this would be a good place to talk about local heros Depistado. They are a great punk/indie band from my town who managed to sign to Jade Tree.

Unfortunately, they broke up not to long ago. But now, two great Regina, Saskatchewan bands have come in their place. Sylvie features Depistado's bassist as their lead guitarist and singer, and they have an album that is highly anticipated coming out on one of my favorite Canadian labels, Smallman Records. They are actually touring with Controller.Controller in a bit. Take a look at the song "Hit and Run" on their site, and if you aren't hooked, well, you're fucked up.

Also, some of you who have checked out Ted Leo's recent tour (or who will check it out in the future) will get to see Geronimo, which features the lead singer and the guitarist from Depistado. They haven't released anything yet, but when I saw them live the other night, it seems that they are going along the same lines as Depistado.

Anyways, just a thought.

Anya Marina

This is wierd. They sound a lot like the local (Perth) band Little Birdy. And the singer looks damn similar too (except with black hair). And her voice is similar as well.

These guys are a little to hard for my tastes but they're big in the local punk/metal scene.  I present "My American Heart".

I personally like "As I lay dying" better but their still more hardcore then I normally listen to.

As mentioned before Pinback is still one of my favorate local bands.  They play a mellow indie sound which is just great to listen to live & I also like how they don't try to tell the audience what to do (the typical craptastic "EVERYONE STAND UP AND CLAP YOUR HANDS!!!!")  and instead just invite you to listen to their music.

Another unusual local choice is the latin/pop/funk group The B-Side Players.  Give them a listen if you get a chance.

I just went to a show for a local band (Salt Lake City) called Whiskey's Wake, and they're fucking awesome. Think somewhere between the Pogues and Flogging Molly.

I happen to be really lucky. My local scene has involved at times The Consantines, who i think are one of the best bands out there.

There's a pretty cool metal band called Corvus over here. Their record sucks, but they're fucking great metal live.

EDIT: Just for clarification, this is NOT the Corvus from Pheonix Arizona, this is the Corvus from Groningen The Netherlands
