Hi, I'm really stupid in the world of gaming...I only had a Nintendo 64 until recently, when I got a PSII (not going into the story of how I ended up getting that...*sweatdrop*).  I've heard Final Fantasy is good, but what's the first one called? And what gaming platform thing is it?  I know I should probably be looking at some website, but as I said, I know next to nothing gaming-wise, so I don't know any sites....can any of you help me?  Or am I just going to have to stay really stupid?

The first Final Fantasy game was oddly enough called Final Fantasy. It was for the NES and remade with fancier graphics for the Playstation and Game Boy Advance. You don't really have to play any of these games in order because none of them are a continutation of the story from a previous game.

Start with FFX, then get FFVII (best in series) and then FFVIII.

Lies.  10 was lame and 8 was probably the worst of the lot.  I'd suggest playing Final Fantasy 4(2 on the SNES) and then 6(3 on the SNES, and also the best), and then going onto 7.

I would suggest 6 and 8, and 10 can be fun- what kind of game are you looking for?  Allmost all are available for PS1 or 2 at the moment, so you can play just about anything.  Graphics an issue, or is it storyline you seek?

just play almost nay of them.  none of them are terrible, and they ARE similar enough that if youre just getting into final fantasy that if you hate one youll hate them all.  ffx is a good choice because itll be easy to find, 20 bucks, and noe ffx2.

p.s. befor ei get flamed im not saying that all ff are the same, or even amazingly similar, but i think if someones new to the entire series its kind of love hate

You do make a good point- even if the FF games arn't exactly the same, if you play one and hate it, chances are you will hate them all.

I think X isn't a bad first choice, but if you are a big graphics person the older ones will seem pretty crappy after that, unless you can put that behind ya.

The only reason I wouldn't suggest FFX as a starter would be due to its strict linearity in comparison to all the rest.  That could turn some people off.  FF7 (loathe as I am to say this) is probably where you should start if you're new to the series.  It's the most user friendly, imo, and just not a bad game overall.

There's also the consideration of what visual style of RPG you like.  If you hate 3D environments, you're gonna hate everything post FF6 (Final Fantasy 3 domestically).

I like 10, but I do agree that 8 sucked.  It was mostly fine except for the damn summonings; god it got boring sitting through those animations over and over and over.

Personally I would recommend starting with from the beginning (except skip the first; too primitive in gameplay, story, and graphics.  Unless you're a really hardcore RPG fan, in which case it is candy from heaven.)  As people say, the series is just as accessible no matter what order you play it, but starting from the beginning will allow you to appreciate the changes in the series.

Incidentally, what do people think of 9?  I keep meaning to play it, but haven't gotten around to it.

I may be the sole voice here, but I liked it.  Up to the very end, I was real happy with my gaming experience.

But take into consideration that FF8 is my #3 Final Fantasy game.

9 Sucked imo, but I really enjoyed 8. I cant decide between 7 and 6, dont try to make me, please.

Asses to X, because what i loved was the non-linear style, but it is good to begin on.

*is really amazed that she created a thread that didn't die after two posts*

thanks to all of you!  Everything you said helped...I had mentioned to my dad that I wanted to play FF, and he was at Game Stop to get some things, and got me the FFX used, and cheap. So i guess I'll be starting with that.

And Eldirial, after playing on an N64 since...well, a really long time, I should be fine with crappier graphics.  (plus I can't give up on bad graphics now! I still plan on finishing Zelda one day! *has been playing it on and off since she was nine*)

Ugh, blitzball was the worst thing about 10.  Mind you, despite hating blitzball I still went to the trouble of getting Wakka's ultimate weapon.  As a power-leveling RPG maschocist, I was compelled to.

I'm sorry. I like FF games, but 10 just seemed kind of boring. It never actually felt like I got into the game. All I did was wander around until the next cut scene. It was too damned linear. I'm at the end and now all I have to do is beat the game, but I just haven't mustered up the energy. I keep finding other stuff to do instead (like buy another game). It's not to say it's terrible, but I was unsatisfied with it.

I'm with Vlishgnath, 9 was a fun game up until the end. Then it just got tedious to me. I love 7 and without it I probably wouldn't care about the series. It's why I picked up the other games, including 1 & 2 for my Gameboy.

See, I loved... well.... I enjoyed the movie they showed about blitzball.

Other than that, I more or less hated it.  But still, its definatly a... part of the game you remember. lol.

I think 10 is the best FF game since 7. But 6 is still easily the best in the series. 7 is great, but it cannot hold a candle to 6.

If you don't have a SNES, and have no moral qualms against emulation, go and download it. You will not be disappointed.

Hahahaha, YES!  I've had that discussion with pretty much everyone that's ever played this game.

Necros (last guy) is actually the "crystal" or something like that.  I can't remember it myself, but that's what a friend of mine was affirming a few weeks ago.  Silly.

i thought he wanted to smash the crystal or some crap to return everything to "normal" so there's equilibrium in the universe. problem was his definition meant that he had destroy everything. idk, i haven't played in years and imo is the worst after ff x-2 in the series.

play 6,7, watch Advent Children, play 8, skip 9 and dl Chrono Trigger, play 10, then get Seiken Densetsu 3 and then wait for ff12 and Dirge of Cerberus

As I work as a ''Thread-closing-Bitch'' on ff.de I kinda liked the series and stuff, but really ... avoid FF-X-2.
Recently attended VGXPO and got an american Cartridge of FF 1, I only had the japanse one and couldnt get an adapter -.-''

Played evry Game until yet [excluding FF tactics] and if u want a mixture of FF and Secret of mana you should geht ''Legend of Mana'' for PsOne - its kinda fun.

I've played every Final Fantasy on the Playstation, nintendo and gameboy consoles.  I find myself weakend everytime I play because of the "deep intertwined relationships and drawn-out plots that involve 6 1/2 hours of conversation just to get somewhere" ... but that's just me.

Recently I haven't touched a FF game... haven't even played much off XI online and am looking forward to XII.

Advent Children is amazing by the way if you haven't already taken a look.

FINAL FANTASY VII

It is the best combination of story, graphics, and gameplay I have ever found in an RPG.

Also, FFVIII and FFIX are very underrated in the FF world. I'd recommend those as well.

FFVI is exceedingly overrated and unlike FFVII, it doesn't have the quality to back it up in my book. I guess you could try the game, but I didn't like it that much.

Sometimes, it seems to me like I enjoy all the games and movies other people hate. I really love that game. Okay, it's as shallow as a wet pavement,  and Hedy Burress' voice acting isn't substantially improved, but there's a certain charm to it.

I guess I'm just not cut out to have the kind of mentality that actively dislikes something based on how it performs versus other products. Sure, I can say "yeah, it's not as good as FFVIII", but at the same time, I really see no reason why that fact alone is enough to engender such vitriol. I prefer to like or dislike a product based on its own merits, rather than on how it stacks up to the others that are available.

X-2 may not be the best in the series by a long way, but it's still fun.

Pshaw.  You're all nuts.  If you need an RPG to suck away all your free time, just get the Fallout 1 + 2 dual jewel (it's $5.00 or so most places...hell, I already had a copy of F2 and I bought it for F1).  It's a fantastic story-based immersive RPG, but without the endless grind of FF games.  And in what FF game can you make someone into hamburger with an automatic shotgun?  None.  I rest my case.

And, unless you're still on an IBM PCjr or something, it'll run on any computer you throw at it.  Or mac, if you get the MacPlay F2 version.

I've gotta say that I was a bit harsh on the game, seeing as VII was my first FF. :P

Yeah, cliche, I know.

I just thought the plot fell apart after "the island". It was pretty darn good up until that point.

I DID compare it: it's not as good as FFX or any other FF game, for that matter. However, judged on its own merits, its still a highly enjoyable game, or at least, so I think. It had a certain cute charm that amde up for its other shortcomings.

Mm, FF has it's shortfalls like any other RPG's, more if your nitpicky about it, but it's a solid RPG base at least that we can count on for more games for a while yet.

But the FF i liked was 7, 9, and 11..IMO 12 shall be the peak of execellence (I hope?)

Actually VIII is my favorite for story/characters, but VI has the best gameplay.  X is unplayable crap; the only thing it has going for it is the battle system.  VII is obscenely overrated.  If you like VI, I'd recommend playing the previous games pretty much in reverse order; they're all relatively similar and you can see the evolution that led to VI's near perfection.

uh if you want the roots why not play the earlier games O_o?? on IX, to me it was just really dissappointing after VIII; gone was the junction system, your party members didn't follow you around anymore, even the card mini-game felt pretty poo. and the fact you could get to the last disc in under 12 hours kinda shows how little there is plot-wise (main villain was like a failed Sephiroth)

In theory, he made sense, but in practice, it fell flat on it's face. There wasn't enough build-up, IMO.

Still an awesome game. Return of 4-person parties FTW, especially the way they worked Blank into that battle in the forest. Brilliance.

Kind of off-topic, but to expel the standard "didn't like FFVI because it was too old-school" feelings before they get brought up...

FFIV >>> FFVI, IMO.

Sorry. -__-;

FF4 was the first one to have a cohesive story (and one that is still very good, IMO), but FF6 is just the pinnacle of the series as far as I'm concerned. Admittedly, I never played 9, and never finished 8.

Also, even though the protagonists were downright annoying, I think FFX gets too much flak. The thing is, the FF series got so famous for its engaging storylines, until it focused so much on making them more complex that they stopped... making sense. FFX (and even FFVII) have very deep stories, but some of the plot points in the stories (which I won't mention in particular because of spoilers) are just plain ridiculous.

Well, FFVII had an amazingly deep story (I'm not sure where it is now, but there was a huge article about the themes and underlying concepts/subtexts behind the plot of the game), but it was kind of mishandled in translation. I would love to play a remake with a good translation.
