Der Tattoo Thread.

Tatoos are just way too permanent for me. I guess it's telling of my fear of commitment. I just can't think of anything that I could live with for the rest of my life. Perhaps I should look at it this way: I could get hit by a bus tomorrow. Nah. Nevermind. No tats. Piercings FTW!

--- Quote from: ephemere ---I drew and inked a gryphon I'd been planning to get tattooed for my 18th birthday, but due to a combination of lack of funds and lack of balls I never actually got it done. That and I haven't decided where I want it yet.
You can still see it here though. I hope I can get it soon, I'm really pretty proud of the drawing so it would be a shame for it to go to waste.

Whoa...that would make a great tattoo. If I ever finally get one, I might have to commission you to make me a phoenix.

--- Quote from: Leonidas ---However, I know that I will never get one. A tattoo used to be something original and something unique. It was also something that had particular meaning to the person who wore it. Now though it's common. Every other person has a tattoo. More often than not some Chinese symbol which they believe means something to do with hope or love or eternity or something else just as vomit enducing. Either that or some tribal design down their arms or legs. It seems almost as if the whole idea of getting a tattoo has become passe and common.

I couldn't agree more.
To add to that, I often find that people tattoo religious symbols on their body without actually really believing in it. I am not a religious person, but I respect other people's beliefs and wearing a religious symbol for vain reasons seems very disrespectful to me.
That said, what also bothers me is that amount of people getting tattoos done that are small and not visible in addition to being generic. If you want to get a tattoo, make it count.
As such, I am fascinated by tattoos though and if I see someone wearing a unique tattoo, I lusually ike it a lot (as in: not your generic tribal motive/pitbull/anchor/whatever). And if I could think of a something I really believe in and that I would most likely still believe in 20 years, I would get it tattooed. Preferrably a large tattoo, possibly covering an arm and the shoulder.

--- Quote from: normz ---im getting my fave buddhist mantra tattoo'ed across the small of my back soon ..... the bit across my spine will hurt like a mother fucker but oh well!
--- End quote ---
I have a celtic knot on the base my spine and seriously, it doesn't hurt nearly as much as people will tell you it does. Hopefully the tattooist will make you lean over something to stretch your spin to the max and that makes it a LOT more comfortable. Just try to relax, and not tense your muscles. If your tattooist doesn't have a radio playing try taking a CD player and when it gets uncomfortable just concentrate really hard on the lyrics instead of the pain, it's a great distraction!

I don't like straight edge tattoos. Though I should probably elaborate - I don't like when teenagers get straight edge tattoos. It drives me nuts. It's like getting someone's name tattooed on yourself except A MILLION TIMES WORSE.
A good friend of mine is planning out a huge straight edge chest piece for himself, and everytime he talks about it I feel nauseous. He's been edge for about 3 years now, has "broken" edge like 4 times and at the tender age of 19 is making a huge expensive commitment that will sit there on his chest for his ENTIRE LIFE. Getting your husband or wife's name tattooed is already a big enough commitment, but even straight edge lately isn't so much a commitment as a lame trend that just fits hand-in-hand with being "scene". Hell, even I was "edge" (Argh! I hate that word.) for a year. When you're a kid and you're keeping up with what's cool, getting inked and making a commitment for your entire life as major as NO ALCOHOL, OR DRUGS, OR CIGARETTES, OR FOOLING AROUND, EVER AGAIN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE just seems.. well, irresponsible. When you're a teenager, how can you even make a commitment like that? Even if I was edge, I'd wait until I had been for a good 10 years or so at least before I did something like that.
