Octopi. Latin, masculine, 2nd declension.

All right, enough of me being... me. Does this seem like a reasonable tattoo design? It has great signinficance and I designed it myself.

Edit: Okay, so I was wrong. Life and 2 years of Uni Latin have lied to me. I don't think this is the proper forum to discuss the fact that I am a moron. You can start a thread for that somewhere else.

Actually, both octopi and octopuses are acceptable forms of the pluralization of octopus.

Britney Marie, both of those stories are incredible cute and awesome. And my octopus does seem to be the type to get in knife fights, haha.

Also, I can't find the picture. Which is lame. It used to be on like the third page of google. It was one of the best octopus ones out there :(

I thought it was third declension...

Octopus isn't from Latin at all - it comes from Greek.  If you want to be pretentious, the appropriate plural would be octopodes,  but the correct English plural is octopusesOctopi  is never right (though recorded in some dictionaries - which just record, remember, not prescribe).

That octopus is rad as hell. It's a side view, folks, not an aerial, of course it's going to look like it's missing some legs. Would you necessarily see four legs on a dog that's being viewed from the side? It's like that.

I finally got my newest tattoo this weekend! It's the "interactive" one I was talking about. It's a flash traditional style heart-with-banner on my left bicep, in grayscale, and the banner is blank, so that I can write in whatever I want with Sharpie. I love it, it's probably my best-rendered tattoo. If any of yinz get work done in Pittsburgh check out the Z-Spot in Dormont, it's a VERY nice, clean shop with mostly female artists, and good prices. I'm going to work with the artist to get a custom cover-up on one of my very small text tattoos, I'm afraid it will blur and she agrees. Plus it's my shoulder, prime real estate. Pictures when the tattoo calms down and you can see the grayscale (now, it just looks black). I am going back to them for all my local tattoos and piercings.

I also talked to them about cartilage piercings and while I was originally going to go for a double helix (with a view toward joining them in an orbital some day), I'm now looking at the conch. But I know that it HURTS LIKE FUCK. And takes a long time to heal. But they're so cool! Anyone here have one, and can share? I'm especially interested in knowing if it will prevent me from wearing earbuds forever, I'm willing to go through the pain of this piercing, but perhaps not that inconvenience.

Hmm, this summer seems like a good time to set as my deadline for deciding on both my tattoo idea and also my nose-piercing. Does anyone who knows about such things know if it'd be cheaper to get them done in America as part of Edithcon (when did that become an official name?) or here in the UK?

Well I don't actually have a tattoo but I finally have a plan for my first one! I want it and I want it now but it will be expensive and I am poor. I want a celtic hunting dog running down the inside of one arm and a cat down the other. Facing outwards, starting at the inside of my elbow and running about 2/3 the way down my arm. I have decided I can live with how much of a pain this could potentially be in terms of employment.

I was talking to my friend who has much tattoos and whose ex is a tattoo artist and she thought that for knotwork it looks nice with grey outline and brown shading, which I thought sounded pretty awesome. I have not had too much luck finding pictures but I found these:

The only picture that really fit what I imagine for general style.

Got this great picture of a cat.

And I want something in between these two dogs in terms of posture:

Oh and this is my rather large forearm (after I beat it up with my bow string. Always wear an arm guard!!):

It was the bow dude's fault! He was all dubious I was OK with 40lbs (it's fine, can shoot for ages, so there) so got me to do a couple of shots in the little range he had and my arm guard was in the car. Silly, silly me. Having said that the one closer to my elbow is from my over-extending my elbow and missing the armguard.

Oh yeah true. On the plus side not only are we allowed to hunt with bows in NZ (over 40lbs, no specification about FPS or anything, just "over 40lbs"), we can hunt all year! But it's much more of a slog hunting in NZ than the states usually. No idea about Norway

I have my conch done, personally, it didn't hurt a single bit. But I have a pain tolerance like no one's business(I am also tough), I've had it for little over a year now and it still acts up occasionally, I know some people who have had them for about 5 years, and they still freak out sometimes(nothing a little SSS won't fix though), I really love mine though, and the ear buds thing? It depends on the size of your ears, I can wear things in mine but don't share them and try and keep them clean otherwise it'll make your ear freak out.

PS, I know it has been brought up a thousand times, but does anyone have any really great 'how to stretch your lobes' links so I don't have to read through this whole thread?

Maybe its just me, but most of the time when I see a girl with her ears stretched large enough that you can fit like 3 pens through I just find her way less attractive. And I'm usually all for girls covered in tattoos and piercings.

Hmm, I really like the small-med er, stretchy things. But I'm just not comfortable with making a big hole in my ear that won't close. Annoys me because I really like how it looks. That said, I met someone off a NZ fish forum in the weekend, she's a cute wee Maori woman with a labret, nose, eyebrow and like 8 sleepers in each ear. I rather liked that so might consider going that way instead.

I'm agreeing on the huge-stretchy-not-so-sexy principle here. I think my ear's about 2-4MM at the moment (not dead sure...), and that's as big as I'm gonna' go. I just wanted a suitable size to start wearing some wooden/stone/bone bits through my ear.

i got my ears up to about 10mm back when i was younger, then started to worry that i might not be all that employable in the field i wanted to go into after i graduated so i downsized to about 6mm and got a pair of lovely labradorite stone plugs that make my ear-holes look somewhat nice and not too odd looking.
apparantly downsizing your ears is a TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, INSULTING thing to do (according to many friends with stretched lobes and the internet) and i don't really get what all the fuss is about. i thought it was my body and i could do whatever i wanted to it? can someone who does think downsizing s a terrible thing to do please explain to me why exactly it is, because i am having trouble understanding why my personal decision is so offensive.

Man, I cannot wait for the day that I have huge lobes. Currently I am at half an inch, and can fit a sharpie in my ear. I can't wait until I can fit much bigger things in them.

One of my friends told me a long time ago that he'd disown me if I stretched them too big. After asking him about it again, he said he didn't care as long as I didn't rip them.

yeah they say it's supposed to be this massive commitment, just like any modification you make to your body, and the fact that i'm downsizing means i'm a poser and treating it like a fad and also am a slut and a bitch and yadda yadda.

while i think that is a really noble way to look at body modification i also kind of think people should just be allowed to do whatever they want to their bodies regardless of their reasons? at one point i really was committed to my lobes and making them massive, but after already observing a few people end up unable to find work because of their ears (not to discourage anyone here who is currently stretching), i kind of had to massively reevaluate the situation and decided that as much as i love my ears, i'd rather downsize than see my degree go to waste. either way, they'll never completely close up so i'm still stuck with holes of some kind for good. maybe this makes me a massive conformist jerk after all but i'm just not willing to put my appearance over my future employment situation, as much as i should apparantly be doing the opposite.

It's one of those things where once you enter a counter-culture, then back off, it's a bigger insult than if you'd never considered it in the first place. There's a feeling that it makes the culture itself look weaker when parts of the pack break off, even if you never intended to be part of the pack to begin with.

Human social dynamics are dumb.

luckily, before stretching i had virtually no earlobes so now it just sort of looks like i like big stone earrings? i don't have a camera but here's a photo of someone else with the exact same plugs i currently have in, only mine are slightly larger. a few people have already commented that they liked my earrings without realizing they are plugs, so i am hoping i am maybe alright for now.

That's what I was meaning to say in my post.

It's so weird though that there are people like that; I would have assumed that people into a body modification culture would be more accepting of what someone decides to do with their own body. I thought that was actually a huge part of the culture, the idea that your body is your own and what you do with it is your own business.

Technically it is, but like with most things, you find that a ton of people don't actually think that. When it comes up, the two faced attitude concerning it is very frustrating.

On the other hand, Kotaku reminded me yesterday that I should really just never read comments concerning tattoos/whatever from anything but a bodymod site.

Also, yes, BAF is amazing.

Because I can see some advantages if (b) is the case, but if (a) is the case I don't want any part of it.

A) Yes. B) Yes.

That b is kind of why I want it actually. If I could have a tongue that I could split and mold back into two at will, that would be the raddest.

It's excruciating for about 2 hours after the procedure, and then aches for a few hours after. After that, it's not actually painful, it's more inconvenient than anything for about a week since your eating is limited. I was eating akwardly, but normally by the end of the first 7 days.

If you're a picker though, the few weeks after the procedure will be your favorite thing ever since you have to keep the back of the cut seperated and it likes to get stringy back there.

Well, there's a mental picture I didn't need.

I finally got my sister to take a picture of my tattoo.  It's about 36 hours old now.

Done by Richie at Starlight Tattoo on Rt. 17 in Rochelle Park, NJ.  I had the idea for the swallow, he came up with the rest, i was very open to changes/designs/whatever.
