Prachett as well and all the books but... I don't really want a quote put onto me, no matter how much I believe it because it can look stupidly pretentious.

Honestly, if you start getting tattoo's you'll already look and possibly feel like a pretentious prick becasue you'll start to find that a lot of tattoos suck ass. You get your tats for you, but if you are gonna feel comfortable getting them, text isn't that bad.

Basically, leave it on the back burner and think about it, but don't necesarilly dismiss it. It is Prachett after all.

I think the cog sounds neat. But I really like steampunk and clockwork kind of things. The inside of a watch would be neat. And if you want a good tattoo, you are going to pay good money. Good luck!

That is some fantastic work mietteissass. Out of curiosity, do you have an artist you go to regularly?

I do! His name is Jeremy and he is abfab! Alas, he moved to Seattle so now when I want a tattoo I have to bribe him to come back or hop on a plane. All of which im willing to do.

Ps I wont say what I bribe him with but it is like crack for the tastebuds!

Pork steak with apple and potatoes?

Also, thanks. I am writing a minor steampunk thing at the moment and, as I like the genre and it is somewhat atypical of what people usually get, it seemed like a good idea.

Catacombs, I take offense to the nose ring=booger statement! Maybe if your gauge is too big, but do you really think this looks bad?

I do admit, you can pull it off quite well, but it's still not my thing.  Studs or septums i like (most of the time) but i just don't really like the ring.

EDIT: Back to the pricing discussion, when I got mine done the artist told me that they charged the same for either color or B&W.  He said it was stupid when other shops charged more, because you're still doing the same amount of work.  What do you guys think?  I guess it makes sense, you're still doing the same amount of work and shading, you're just taking the cost of the colored ink.

Re: Shoulder blade tattoos and pricing: Hurray, something I have experience with! Mine cost $50, and took maybe 45 minutes. Quite possibly less. It doesn't really hurt all that bad, I just zoned out after awhile.

I'd also say the smaller it is, the more likely it is to get fuzzy or something. Mine's basically as small as they could make it while preserving clarity.

Norwegian/Bohemian/northern plains Sioux

The best part is that we're basically pretty white, but my dad has skin that's very easily tanned and black hair. This summer was my small town's 125th so he grew a beard. So he was a darker skinned dude with black hair and a beard. Flying was even more of a bitch for him than it usually is (he's also in a wheelchair) since he might be one of them ay-rabs. I don't know why we're discussing heritage in the Tattoo thread, but here's what I've got:

Irish, Welsh (probably, we have a castle there), English, Luxembourgian, and Bavarian. And apparently the part of the family that didn't come to the US from Bavaria went to Slovenia, so I can almost claim that. Almost.

And back on topic, what do we think of astrological tattoos? I've got a design, which I'll add to this post in a minute.

Edit for picture:

I'd make it smaller, but it has odd proportions.
Anyway, the Sagittarius is mine, the Libra is my sister's. It probably won't be for awhile, as I am poor.

I'm getting my 1st tattoo next week. It's a piece the artist came up with, and he's doing it for free since I showed interest in it.

Not being familiar with the process, I am wondering, how much should I tip him? The tattoo would cost $60 normally (shop minimum); it's a single color and shouldn't take longer than a half hour to finish by his estimate. Oh, and its going on my ass cheek.

I'm thinking $20-30. Should I go higher or is that apropriate?

20 is probably enough, that's my standard tip for an hour, but you could go higher since he's doing it for free.

I tipped the guy $20 on mine, and it took a little under an hour to do.  If it's free though, I'd probably tip a little more, since he's giving you a good deal.

Tip what you feel is appropriate/what you can realistically afford. If you're getting it free then you could use the minimum price as a guide - if it's $50 minimum maybe something like $30-40.

Gauging question (the real reason I stopped by): I currently have 14g lobes and a 14g cartilage piercing. I bought very very pretty new 10g acrylic earrings. Can I just use a taper and put in the acrylics, or do I have to taper and then use surgical steel, like I did the first time?

Norwegian/Norwegian/Norwegian/Norwegian/Norwegian/Norwegian/Norwegian/Norwegian! I don't even have any Sami heritage, I think (at least not from my great-great-grandparents and "down"), which is slightly odd considering where parts of my family is from, but ah well.

I saw an awesome tattoo today. It was basically done without outlines at all, with a brown branch and red and white flowers springing from it, running down an upper arm. Kinda difficult to explain, but it looked fantastic. One of the prettiest I've seen, I think.

Whoa whoa. Go to 12g first. Skipping sizes when your ears are smaller may not seem like a big deal, but it will most likely cause problems if/when you decide to go bigger. Missing sizes can damage your ears and cause scar tissue, rips, or blowouts, none of which is much fun. Also,

Steel, definitely want non-porous material for the initial stretch.

Some people react badly to acrylic in a fresh stretch. Some people don't, but it's not a nice thing to find out when you don't have any alternative jewellery.

Thanks Ackblom and Gemmwah.

My piercer told me it was okay to skip sizes when they're still pretty small. But that was when I went from 18 to 14, which isn't much of a big deal. I guess 14 to 10 is a bigger step?

Truly, piercers tend to know shit all about stretching. Skipping sizes when they're small is a pretty bad idea, because the diameter change might not be much, but the circumference change is rather large. For example, the circumference of an 18ga earring is approx. 0.785mm, the circumference of a 14ga earring is 2.001mm, and that is quite a big jump for such a small and non-stretchy hole to make, which is why there's 16ga, which is 1.131mm. A much more reasonable jump if you ask me.

So if you look at it in terms of circumference, we're looking at

18ga = 0.785mm
16ga = 1.131mm
14ga = 2.001mm
12ga = 3.142mm
10ga = 4.524mm

Considering it's all relative and goes by logical percentage increases, it really is no surprise why the sizes don't change much in diameter in the smaller gauges. It may seem like it does no harm, but you'll probably regret it if you go bigger, or to "the point of no return", because skipping small sizes can cause seriously ugly looking naked lobes.

So yeah. Piercers don't know a whole bunch about stretching.

At the smaller sizes it's not as much of a problem, but it's a good idea to not skip. I mean, if you can get the 10 in with no resistance at all, then go for it, it's obviously ready, but if you need to taper, only taper one size.

Once you 8 - 4, that's around the time I would suggest moving to Teflon Tape rather than tapers. Assuming of course you're stretching up that far.

Edit: Yeah, what Gemm said.

I can imagine it hurts like a bitch, that's a ton of cartilage to go through and heal. Still, look completely kick ass. Congrats!

Also, after around 2 - 3 weeks of taping, I've finally hit 3/4" (approx 19mm). Huzzah!

Here it is fresh out of the shower, wet, lubed and quite content.

How do you guys feel about...I guess I'd describe them as state pride tattoo's.  Like the outline of your state or something.  I'm from New Jersey, and proud of it.  I was kind of thinking about getting the outline of NJ somewhere, but I don't know what else to do with it.  I've seen some that turn out pretty good, like the state outline with something inside it, and some that are kind of lame.  Thoughts?

(In case you've never seen NJ on a map, it's not just a square state like...Wyoming or something  :wink:)

yeah i would say don't skip sizes and try to use a taper and lubricant whenever possible. lubing something up and sliding it into your earlobe is never going to not make you feel kind of pervy and gross, but it helps immensely with stretching.
