I must say, they're rather snazzy, aren't they? Been listening to them for a while, but I've just today gotten into them something hardcore. But this leads on to the real point of the topic...

I was having a debate with a friend of mine; do Isis count as post-rock?
He thinks they're 'sludge metal', but to me, they give off a very post-rock... feel. It's all sprawling and epic, and mostly instrumental. And even when the vocals do kick in, they're not really like any other metal-vocals I've heard. We kind of came to a compromise and called them 'post-metal,' but I'm still not sure.

Many people would call them "art metal". I don't necessarily agree; There are far more experimental metal bands that are simply leagues beyond them in that aspect; Post metal would work, I guess.

Either way, Crotchduster is better.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Check out Behold... The Arctopus.

Then you can talk about "inteligent metal".

EDIT: I guess you could call them post-metal, but isn't there already a name for this type of epic, but self-conciously so, style of metal? There's gotta be. Christ, there's fucking folk-metal.

You mean Behold...The Arctopus, right?

Isis are kinda boring in my book.

Personally, I always think you need to have progressed beyond rock music in order to count as post-rock, much like post-punk was a progression beyond punk. But it is odd there isn't a genre for that style of metal (other than saying 'it sounds like it's on Hydrahead'). But maybe that's a good thing, perhaps it'll help it to stop becoming stale and narrow.

From what I've heard of Isis I feel that there are plenty of other bands who've done the same thing as them and better. Isis are just more immeidietly digestible to your average college-radio indie-rock audience than bands like Sunn 0)) or Skullflower who usually get relegated to the late night experimental show.

You really think they're in the same kind of ballpark as those guys? I would've thought they were doing a rather different style, a lot less traditional than what Isis play. Isis always sound to me like they've been heavily influenced by fairly straightforward indie (no bad thing in my book, incidentally).

The problem I have is that they overuse the quiet/loud dynamic without ever getting quite loud enough, and that too many of the parts they prolong for some time on Oceanic aren't good enough to merit their length. The record just seems too stretched, like it's been pulled out when tightening it would have given it the punch it needs.

I normally call it art-metal or post-metal. Although post-metal should really in my book mean Borknagar, Vintersorg, Arcturus, ...And Oceans, Blut Aus Nord etc.

Isis I'd say have won a lot of attention over the familiarity of their post-rock dynamic.  It's certainly very present.  And compared with the more rough-sounding and/or creative post-rock, doom metal and post-metal groups out there, I find them rather boring I'm afraid.

I'm with Kid on this one. Isis is some of the best music I've listened to this year.

A friend of mine who is far more qualified to discuss the intracacies of metal, rock, and the like, called them "Atmospheric-metal." After listening to what he has sent me, I've started calling it "Dense Atmospheric (Metal)."

Dunno why I thought I should post that. Actually, I don't know why I'm here. Wait, I do now. Isis threads are like a flame to a moth. I'm the moth.

Bah, I was totally still in critical paper writing mode when I wrote that. I should have just said that Isis aern't my cup of tea or that when I want some heavy riffology they just don't satisfy me so I listen (so and so band).

First time I heard Crotchopus I was in tears.  I still want to punch his crippled ass for taking he time to learn an entire set of lyrics backwords.

Also:

"Dear Jennifer:  Shut Up; which is what your /man/ would say to you if he weren't a lumberjack lookin dyke."

That song still has the best opening ever in the history of music.

"Dude! Dirty asians who like Jewish dildos is on in 37 seconds, turn the TV on now!"

Pelican are great. Maybe with a couple of more albums down the line they'll be excellent. For now, I prefer Isis. You should listen to Red Sparowes. They pwn some major balls.
