Ugh.  I hate it when writers do that.  It's nice that you have this grand vision and things that work epicly in your head, but when a vast majority of your (intelligent) readers see glaring faults in your presentation, that's all on /you/ buddy.

Is that an open/closed story or are there previous works you need to read to fully understand what's going on?  I've been looking for new fantasy stuff.

Start with A Game of Thrones. Enjoy. And I mean it - if you like fantasy, you're going to goddamn love this series. Think the War of the Roses, but with a touch of La Morte d'Arthur, a taste of the Iliad, and pretty much everything good about fantasy rolled in - but with realistic, multidimensional characters who (as est mentioned) can actually die. It's brilliant.
