Has anyone else heard of this band? They're from Norway, a friend put me on to them. They play kind of moody, intense sounding rock influenced a little by Tom Waits, and by eastern european folk. They've got a pretty distinctive sound that I like, lots of heavy percussion, double bass, saxophone, accordion, and apparently a pump organ. I'm crap at description, but I recommend.

People I know in Denmark love them. Not really my sort of thing though..the singer songwriter project of their leadsinger (Janove Ottessen) is great though. Black and white movie is a great track.

No, it's in English. cd's called Francis Lonely nights (if I recall correct). I'll see to which songs I have access currently later on tonight and make them accessible for you (though it could well be just b&w movie. i do have access to a lot of Kaizers material by chance. i'll make that accessible too)

I adore Kaizer's Orchestra, the pride of Norway in my opinion, all of their albums are awesome. As far as I am concerned they have no weak tracks at all and even if they were more studio-oriented on Maestro than the other two, they pull it off beautifully. They are supposed to be a blast live too, going bonkers with oil barrels and gasmasks!
You shouldn't be put off by the norwegian vocals because the music is so good even without understanding the lyrics. Though I admit they are half the pleasure with their talk about gangsters and asylums and of course the devil.
The guitarist in Kaizers also has a punk band called Skambankt with yelled socialistic slogans in norwegian and stuff. Another Kaizers related band is Cloroform which have their bassist in it, it's supposed to be good I hear if a bit randy

Is this one of their songs from that CD? I really like that song.

If so, than yeah, I've looked for them, but I haven't seen anything. Should've tried to look for it while I was in Norway this past summer, I suppose, but I didn't know they were Norweigan.

Oh, I got no problem with the Norwegian lyrics

I spent a year as an exchange student in Sweden, so I understand enough to get by. Actually I really like the norwegian vocals.

Yeah, I didn't really like Maestro as much as the others, you're right, it was a bit more of a studio stound. Still a great album, but I miss the dirty sound from Ompa and Evig Pint.

Also, yeah Stifled, that is one of their songs, "Bak et halleluja" off the album "Ompa til du dor". You should be able to find it on the US itunes store, or maybe on Amazon.

Wow, I didn't expect to find a thread about Kaizers in here ^^

I love Kaizers more than any other band right now! I've liked them for about a year, and I saw them live when they came to Stockholm during the Maestro-tour. They're definately the best live-band I've ever seen! It was worth having to fight with some redhead-bitch in front half of the show just to be near them :]

I'd love to see them live, but they aren't really likely to tour australia
my only option is to hope they still exist when I next have the opportunity to go to europe...which is also going to be a while

it really will be a while before I get a chance to visit europe - Japan is next on my list, and that will likely cost a lot. meanwhile, I do the best I can to get friends listening to them. though I think that aussies, like americans, are a bit reluctant to listen to music when they can't get the words. fools.

I've also tried to get my friends to listen to them, but people don't really take norwegian music very serious in Sweden.. I guess we're not better than americans and aussies

Really? I allways thought the relationship between Sweden and Norway was a bit like that between Australia and New Zealand, or America and Canada.

See New Zealanders speak with a funny accent, but we basically speak the same language and have a bit in common, so in Australia we steal all their best musicians and claim that they were allways ours anyway.

När jag var utebytesstudent bodde jag i Mönsterås, en liten by som ligger ungefär 5 mil norra om Kalmar. Jag har varit i Stockholm en del, och jag tycker om staden. Jag har kompisar som bor där.

Well, we do understand them most of the time, but it's hard when they speak (or sing) too fast.. I didn't understand a single word the first time I heard Kaizers Orchestra, but now that I've heard them like 1000 times I'm starting to get a bit more used to the norwegian language.. I guess it also depends a bit on where in Sweden you live, and what kind of norwegian they speak. Some Swedish dialects have more in common with norwegian than the dialect we have in Stockholm, for example.

But I think for most of us, norwegian sounds a bit silly and goofy, and perhaps that's why we don't take them too serious.. Or maybe it's just because we swedes live in a fantasy world where we're the only nordic country that has anything worth mentioning. We kinda see ourselves as Norways bigger brother or something.. Not only in music, but also in sports and movies and pretty much everything.

And in all honesty, if I didn't know who Kaizers where, I'd also find it kinda wierd if someone would say to me that their favourite band was a norwegian folk-rock orchestra with gasmasks who played on oil barrels and accordions

Bigger-brother complex? Oh, absolutely

It does seem similar to the Australia/New Zealand relationship. Do swedes have stupid-norwegian jokes? Because we certainly have new zealander jokes here. Most of which just aren't worth repeating.

As for the norwegian lyrics, well, I get some of them. It varies from song to song. The few lyrics that I understand are the ones I shout along to, and draw strange looks from people around me

Because they're looking for low prices.

Those are pretty generic. I know some quite complex jokes about the Finns though, and a great one about Oslo train station.

This band sounds like they might be alright actually.

I used to love stupid-norwegian jokes when I was a kid. Then I found out that they had the exact same jokes about us, and then it just wasn't that fun anymore.

What songs do you understand better? I 'd guess that "Kontroll på kontinentet" would be easier than "Delikatessen" for example. (I actually don't understand much of "Delikatessen" myself, even if it's pretty much my favorite kaizer-song)

Resistansen is probably the easiest. I can get a bit of Kontroll på kontinentet and Ompa til du dör. Generally I get a bit of every song, though aside from Resistansen it's mostly odd phrases here and there

Nice surprise to see a topic about a norwegian band. I saw Kaiser's Orchestra live last moth actually. And I saw Skambank live on "Quart '05". Both were great!

You can't seriously mean that Sweden is like an older brother to Norway? And I don't mean to start a big argument, but seriously...seriously. In sports? You never win anything?

Tho' I must agree on the movie part, however, lately we have had som very good movies. And when it comes to music, the only good thing that's ever come out of your country is Promoe and Looptroop.
Saw Looptroop live last moth also by the way, and I must say, they are the best nordic rappers.

Hmm... Guess I'm a bit of an original in this thread...

I saw Kaizers live in Tromsø in 2002 or 2003, and didn't like them at all. There's just something about them that makes me cringe a bit, I suppose. Could be the dialect, never were too fond of the Stavanger-dialect.

That being said, I understand why people like them.

On a side note: Sweden being the big brother? HAH! You're better in hockey, golf, tennis and ping-pong... Oh, and debt...

I thought the "fantasy world"-part would give you the hint that I myself don't agree with the big brother-thing. Patriotism has never been my cup of tea. I'm just saying what swedes in generall think.

I don't agree with you on the music-part, though. There's a lot of great swedish indie- and rock-bands, such as bob hund, shout out louds, the coral, thåström, backyard babies, brainpool, david and the citizens, soundtrack of our lives, popsicle, the perishers, the mo, moneybrother, the ark, hellacopters, imperiet and ebba grön, to name a few.. Maybe that's not the kind of music you like though.
(and when it comes to sports, I have to say that I don't care enough to know if we win anything. The only sport I like is bowling, but I don't like to watch it though)

Btw, those of you who like Kaizers should give Bob Hund a listen. They're not quite the same thing, but there are some similarities. And the singer has a wonderfull skåne-dialect that kind of sounds a bit like norwegian (to me anyway)

Been a while since I last played some of theirs, but it's a really great band.

Also, you mention The Hellacopters. For that alone you should have my babies! They did a combo-tour with Gluecifer a couple years back, and I've never been happier after a concert ever.

A friend of mine got me onto these guys a while ago, and I became an instant fan.

Love the blend of styles and the almost carnival like atmosphere at times.
