i am seeing the stars in december in toronto, so that is exciting. anyone know who is opening for them?

i have seen some good shows this year, still not a lot, but it's hard for me to get out to them.

the faint
bright eyes
sigur ros
fond of tigers
the pink mountaintops
dredg
blood brothers...

and more, but i just don't remember at this time.

the faint were INCREDIBLE live. go see them! now! and sigur ros i don't have to say anything about, they were beautiful. blood brothers i posted about, fucking intense. fond of tigers i was really stoned in the downtown eastside in vancouver, and it was an experience. check them out. experimental jazz/ post-rock.

I would say the biggest show I've been to was seeing The Cure, Interpol, Rapture, and Cursive at the Curiosa Festival in August 2004.

The smallest show I've ever been to was also the last show I went to, to see Ris Paul Ric (ex-member of Q and not U's solo deal) where there were a max of 50 people, it was kind of sad.

Some of my favorite concerts were mewithoutYou, Against Me!, and Q and not U (twice!) who were my favorite band.

I hope this doesn't seem like name dropping because I could see that becoming a problem for this thread.

Best concert I've been to would either be one of the two Bad Plus shows I've been to, Patti Smith touring Trampin', or Eels on the Eels With Strings tour.

Best show was definitely the Darren Hanlon gig(s) I went to earlier this year.  The man is a born entertainer.

Just this morning I discovered that Broken Social Scene are going to be in Australia next February.  By amazing coincidence, just this morning I also bought a ticket to go and see Broken Social Scene in Australia next February!

The Arcade Fire with Wolf Parade and Bell Orchestre.  That show was a massive piece of sex.  Two of my favorite indie bands playing incredibly, plus Bell Orchestre just being awsome.

Q and not U put on an excellent live show, do they not??  I saw them once this past summer and kick myself for having missed their farewell shows here in my/their fair city.

Medications, a newer Dischord band, also put on quite the live show.  I recommend their album and EP as well.

As for me, the best shows I out of the dozens I've seen this year (in addition to the two mentioned above) were Rilo Kiley, 13 & God, Rainer Maria, Thievery Corporation, and a fun little band out of Nashville called De Novo Dahl.  Worst shows?  Architecture in Helsinki (left before it was over) and Destroyer's opening set for The New Pornographers.

Awesome shows I've been to this year:

The Weakerthans/Constantines (!)
The Shins
Controller.Controller
Thunderbirds Are Now!/Constantines
You Say Party! We Say Die!

And a bunch of local shows interspersed.

Shows I missed because I am not 19: New Pornographers, Fiery Furnaces, Four Tet, Spoon, and others.

Man, I missed Four Tet and Manitoba because a) I'm 17, and b) I only got into that kinda stuff literally the week after the show.

Just under four months until I can actually get into places, woo!

I saw TMBG (They Might Be Giants) when I was younger at Bumpershoot, a Seattle festival of...stuff. I can't remember much, but that was my first show.

My second and only other show was a few months ago, a bunch of crappy bands followed by Bif Naked. I'm not a big Bif Naked fan, but it was free.

I've had to chance to go to cheap punk shows in my very own neighborhood twice, but I was hanging with my best friend both times and he has horrible taste in music. Maybe I should fix that...

I've been trying to compile a list of all the shows I've seen, before I start forgetting more than a couple. Also, it's a handy way to procrastinate, especially when I go all OCD about it (e.g. using university access of online newspaper archives to check the lineup of radio station festivals from seven years ago).

One of the better shows I have been to this year was the 9/25/05 Brooklyn Responds hurricane benefit show at Southpaw in Brooklyn. I got there late so I "only" got to see They Might Be Giants, The Wrens, Matt & Ira of Nada Surf (the band minus the bassist, really), and Sam Champion (see why I put only in quotes?).

TMBG were not particularly amazing but it was pretty sweet to see them live at least once. I'm not a huge fan but I think they've got some good records. I only wish they'd played "Ana Ng." "James K. Polk" was pretty sweet though.

The Wrens were fantastic. Thanks to this show I made my friend send me The Meadowlands and I am going to buy it soon. Kevin Whelan told this great little story about seeing TMBG on MTV and wanting to start a band, and how great it was to play onstage after them, and then Charles Bissel made some great offhand comment about the perils of being older than your heroes.

Nada Surf were also great. I had been underwhelmed by what I'd heard of Let Go, so even though I had found "Concrete Bed" catchy I didn't have high expectations for The Weight Is a Gift. Like the Wrens, Nada Surf sold me on their album at this show. Matt was on acoustic guitar and vocals and Ira was just drumming with his hands on a miked hollow box that he was sitting on.

I think this is the point during the night when Aziz Ansari did standup. He'd been scheduled to go on earlier but got held up on the way. He was hilarious as always.

After the three great acts and then the comedy interlude, Sam Champion were markedly underwhelming, in comparison both to the other bands and to the other time I'd seen Sam Champion, at the Bowery opening for The Hold Steady. So I took off only a few songs into their set. They're not a bad band by any means, but at that point I wasn't interested.

I was one of the last to leave actually; there was a mass exodus after TMBG, and a smaller echo after The Wrens; an acquaintance at the show (who works at the Knitting Factory and seems to know half the people who work at venues) said she was told that the two bands, the biggest on the bill, played halfway through instead of at the end because "they're old. [ed: relatively speaking of course] They want to go home to their families." For which I certainly don't blame them. It was just interesting to see the CYHSY/National effect in action at another show.

Tomorrow night is Melt-Banana, Khanate and Reth. It's been about four years since I last saw Melt-Banana, so this should be nothing short of incredible. Khanate ought to be pretty damn fine too, and I haven't seen Reth since my mate Paul joined on bass so they ought to be even better than before. Then on saturday it's the almighty Narcosis, along with some other excellent bands which I think includes the jaw-dropping Like A Kind of Matador. Gonna be a bit of a good weekend I think.

Haven't seen anything other than incredibly shit local swedish bands lately.

Best I've ever seen would have to be before I moved to Sweden:

Sparklehorse with Neutral Milk Hotel supporting
Brian Wilson presents SMiLE
The White Stripes (several times but best after White Blood Cells came out)
My Morning Jacket
New Order

Hopefully going to see Efterklang in two weeks and maybe some grime MCs and DJs in Stockholm.

Awesome live shows I've been to this year (in no particular order):

Electric Eel Shock. Who rock with their cocks out. Literally.
The Flying Luttenbachers, who were breathtakingly awesome
Sigur Rós
Aereogramme
Nine Inch Nails
Motörhead
Coheed & Cambria, who were good but only played for a fucking hour. And I drove two hours to Cologne, just for that. Thanks, guys.
These Arms Are Snakes
Turbostaat, for the third time, because they're awesome.
Oma Hans, for the second time because they're awesome and because it's their last tour, ever.

Coming up:
Dredg
Melt Banana
The Locust

I expect all three to be awesome. Bands that did not impress me as much are not listed.

First: Warped Tour '96, Northampton MA (and I make no apologies, that concert exposed me directly and indirectly to almost half of the music I listen to now)

Most frequent: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, five times (when you live in Boston this does not take much effort); the Hold Steady, three times; Dragstrip Courage, three times

Best: The Hold Steady and Love As Laughter, at TT the Bears in Cambridge MA

Most out of the way: Old Time Relijun, at Trin-Port, Toronto, ON (500 miles away from home); actually I saw a couple hardcore bands in Anaheim, CA a couple years ago but I don't remember them really.

Hell week: Thunderbirds Are Now, the Hold Steady, Constantines, at Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge MA on Saturday; Death From Above 1979, Queens of the Stone Age, nine inch nails, at TD Banknorth Garden, Boston MA the following Tuesday; Mewithoutyou, Dredg, the Blood Brothers, Coheed and Cambria, at the Palladium, Worcester MA the following Friday

I could try to remember all of them, but I just got out of work and my brain is fried.

Zombina and the Skeletones are great.

I'm afraid I must inform you that Alice Cooper and Twisted Sister was more awesome than all the shows you guys went to. Except that other guy who saw Alice. Even though Viking Skull pulled out, which made me sad.

Highlights: Each band played insane drum solos. Twisted Sister did some great rants, one where they name-dropped all the heavy metal bands that had lasted as long as them, then called the modern generation of metal/rock bands 'spineless fucking pussies' and another where they were going on about people complaining about them swearing.
"This one's for you...dad...It's called BURN IN HELL!"
Alice Cooper was just too fucking awesome for words. Showmanship? You ain't fucking seen showmanship. Swords, snakes, chucking fake diamond necklaces to the crowd, guillotines, Paris Hilton having her throat torn out by her dog, Alice Cooper being re-animated as a Frankenstein monster in a white suit after having his head chopped off, and numerous other pieces of insanity featured. Great self-piss taking as well (such as when he performed 'I'm Eighteen with a crutch as a prop. Starting off leaning on it, then sword-fighting and playing air guitar).

Alice is the man.

And it's Motorhead + In Flames + (I'm pretty sure) Girlschool next week. Which will just be great.

I haven't been to nearly enough shows this year.

I saw Pete Yorn at a free show in Chicago...I almost went to Architecture in Helsinki the same day, but then I decided I'd rather see a free show with my friends than pay to see a show by myself.

I saw the Avett Brothers twice this year, once in Chicago, once in Milwaukee.  I missed seeing them on their third trip into this area, but I'll be back when they return in February.

I almost saw the Decemberists, but I had to work :(

Hopefully the upcoming year will provide more opportunities.

I haven't seen too many live shows, sadly.

My first concert, at 13, was Megadeth.

My next one had Bush and Moist playing with some local talent, in a local-radio-sponsored concert.  I was about 16.

Then I went to Edgefest when I was about 19.  Saw too many bands to remember.  Green Day was the most notable.

The most recent, major concert I attended was Radiohead, in Vancouver in 2001.

and I was curious about Sylvie, since I do like Despistado, but I had other plans that night.

I can sum up Motorhead live in one sentence:

"Hello, we are Motorhead, and we play rock and fucking roll"

I'd give my left hand, 60 dollars and a goat to see fucking Motorhead. Or Alice Cooper, for that fucking matter.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Both groups are undeniably among the most awesome shit I've seen live. Motorhead have awesome stage presence

"*sigh* looks like it's that time of the night again boys and girls" (starts playing Ace of Spades as the crowd goes insane)

The only show I regret missing as much as Gigantour was the one my friend went to a year and a half ago. Iron Maiden with Dio and Motorhead opening. That show would have fucking ROCKED.

The Arcade Fire with Wolf Parade and Bell Orchestre.  That show was a massive piece of sex.  Two of my favorite indie bands playing incredibly, plus Bell Orchestre just being awsome.

Yup that's mine as well. I mean it seems obvious to say it but Arcade Fire is just one of the most amazing live bands I've ever seen.
