Can someone please give me a clear definition of what they think is "emo"? I know it's officially -selfish emotion-, -whiney-, etc... however, it seems to me if any music, or anything for that matter shows the slightest bit of sad or artistic emotion, it's struck down and labeled as emo. ehkdkd?

Emo is the new new wave. Bad dye jobs, horrible clothes, sexual ambiguity, and gratuitous synthesizers. History repeats!

I think "emo" has come to be a blanket term for anything moody and whiney. In which case, my 5-year old niece is emo.

Emotional hardcore.

Spawned out of the DC hardcore scene (try blackflag) in the 80's

Bands such as: Rites of spring, Texas is the reason etc. etc.

Then other bands like Jawbreaker and the decendants kinda spawned out of them which I guess would be the start of the pop-punk/emo confusion...

An easy mistake to make, RollOfDimes. Don't sweat it, and pay no attention to certain posters who seem to have sand in their vaginas.

No kidding... this is the only forum on QC where people seem to want to immediately bash anyone who dares to post a question.

Emo or emocore is a subgenre of hardcore punk music. Use of the term (and which musicians should be so classified) has been the subject of much debate.

In its original incarnation, the term "emo" was used to describe the music of the mid-1980s DC scene and its associated bands. In later years, the term "emo-core", short for "emotional hardcore", was also used to describe the DC scene. The term "emo" was derived from the fact that, on occasion, members of a band would become spontaneously and literally emotional during performances. The most recognizable names of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Grey Matter, Fire Party and slightly later, Moss Icon. The first wave of emo began to fade after the breakups of most of the involved bands in the early 1990s.

Starting in the mid-1990s, the term "emo" began to reflect the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate and Texas Is the Reason put forth a more indie rock brand of emo, which was more melodic and less chaotic in nature than its predecessor. The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the end of the 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted their style to the mainstream.

As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the moniker "emo" within popular culture. Whereas, even in the past, the term "emo" was used to identify a wide variety of bands, the breadth of bands listed under today's emo is even more vast, leaving the term "emo" as more of a loose identifier than as a specific genre of music.

note also, emo kids, who are a (largely negatively stereotyped) subculture who listen to emo music, mope a lot, have ultra-trendy haircuts and write about how miserable they are in their LiveJournals.

To those who explained shit or were kind, thank you. :)

As for the asses, the question wasn't in regards to just music. It pisses me off how people who have actual problems, are self-destructive for reasons other then "fuck my girlfriend dumped me; I am in desperate need of attention" etc or actually have real shit to sing about emotionally are dissed and shot down as emo. Just wanted to see if I was missing something.

I'm often not clear in what I'm trying to say, so sorry if it makes no sence. I'll try to simple it up...

Emo kids - stop complaining.

People who make fun of others w/ actual problems and/or emotional things - fuck you.

"HAHA, YOU HAVE EBOLA. GO CRY ABOUT IT ON THE INTERNET."

Okay, that's over with. In other news, I find the emo kinds whining to be funny. I mean, I have OCD and mild schizophrenia, and I consider myself so much better off than many people, and these kids, who are well off enough to buy their stylish clothes and whatnot, are whining. YOU ARE WEAKLINGS. KILL YOURSELVES.

Nah, those kids tend to listen to bad metal bands like Norma Jean in my experience. Emo kids usually spend their time bidding vast amounts on records on Ebay which are out on CD anyway, talking about 'oop' vinyl and being DIY purists.

I wish people wouldn't make the mistake of thinking things that end in the word 'core' can ever be metal. I mean, Crossover can be metal, but that has no core. If you see what I mean.

Anyway, Norma Jean are not metal in any universe. They're just shit.

You know, I rather like the way that hardcore fans swear blind Norma Jean are nothing to do with them, and metal guys say the exact same thing. Let's say Norma Jean should take the blame for Norma Jean, and it's not either of our fault's Khar. We remain unsullied :)

Another thing I was wondering about...  I play accoustic (though probably can't spell it) guitar, used to be self-destructive, and may be depressed and/or obsessive-compulsive.. but I wouldn't consider myself emo. I don't whine about random shit online, my favorite kind of music is Broadway (well, and rock, but you get my point), and though the things I get upset about may seem trivial to others, I feel like I can't help it. Yet, this all seems to be another steriotype for emoness. Blah, evil labeling terminology....

As hard as it will be to do, I have a suggestion for everyone.

Let's not worry about categorization.

Frankly, I don't much care which herd I seem to fit in the best with... nor have I ever seen a flock of sheep and thought; "WOW... they're so much cooler than all the other sheep!  I need to start looking/acting like them!!"

Personally I've always found Sunny Day Real Estate to be very overrated. For the more tuneful side of emo I go for The Hated, and for the harshness then it's all about Love Lost But Not Forgotten and of course the mighty Orchid. All their albums are unfuckwithable.

^ Good point. Gantz is one of the best screamo bands I've ever heard, and they're French. I think the metalcore and/or power-violence scenes have eaten up a lot of the screamo scenes in the US, plus of course most American emo bands last less than three years so it's kind of hard to keep a scene going that way.

Eaves have broken up though.

If you're looking for a good German screamo band though, you might want to take a look at A Fine Boat That Coffin. I saw them live some time ago, they are pretty good, and stylistically interesting in that they mix screamo with grind and jazz elements. At least that's the impression I got live. Their new album also got some good reviews, but personally, I haven't heard it yet.

Eaves broke up? Damn, I really wanted to see them again, I couldn't really appreciate them at Summerslam since it was way too hot in the room to appreciate them properly.

I've heard a couple of mp3s by AFBTC and I must say I was pretty impressed. I might have to lay my hands on that album. Rumblemoose, who are these Gantz people? I wish to know more!

You can't really Google for Gantz (the band) without getting overwhelmed by results for Gantz (the anime), but here is a track and here is another track. Both are taken from releases that I believe are still in print, even, and distributed by I've Come For Your Children distro. Honestly I haven't found much information about them, I just know they're French (you can hear it distinctly during the breakdowns), they write very long songs with multiple extended breakdowns, and they're pretty damn good.

By the way, a pack of wolves, if you're into screamo from Germany, you really ought to check out A Case Of Grenada. They are, in my humble opinion, the best Germany has to offer in terms of screamo right now.
And they absolutely kick ass live too.

Hmm, those Gantz samples are promising but it's hard to tell too much since they cut off just when the songs are kicking in. I'll keep an eye out for them though, I can think of a few people who might well have more in their soulseek folders. I kind of wish screamo bands wouldn't use anime as band names, it's damn near impossible to find info on the excellent Guyver-One for the same reason.

I've heard a couple of tracks by A Case of Grenada and I remember finding them solid but not wowing me. I think I know a guy who's got an album though, so I'll give them another try. I can think of many a great band where if you heard the wrong couple of songs then you'd come away thinking they sucked hard.

I must say that I'm somewhat biased. The songs on their website for example seem pretty slow to me, though pretty interesting thanks to that Drive Like Jehu like impact.
But I've seen them live, and their songs were harder and faster and apart from that, the show was awesome anyway, so woo!

Also: JR Ewing ... what do you think of them?

That depends. I saw them years back when they were touring A Perfect Drama and they really ripped it up. I rate that record and Calling In Dead highly, but yesterday I saw a video for one of their new songs. Crappy MTV indie was not a good move for them. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

I haven't heard their new album yet, but I did read that they've become a lot softer.
But goddamn, the albums you mentioned and Ride Paranoia fucking rock. Oh my yes.

I have yet to see them live though. My guess is: Just because they've gone soft doesn't mean they don't kick ass live anymore. And I will have to find out whether I'm right or wrong.

I very much hope you're right. What worries me is that I can't see boss tunes like A Case of Evacuation fitting in well with their new sound if they've written a whole album that sounds like that which could mean... them dropping them. But hopefully they aren't that retarded. I've no problem with bands getting softer (after all, Husker Du sounded better when they calmed down), but it was all too posed and weak and a far cry from those guys who looked like they might collapse at any moment from bringing too much rock that I remember.
