New to Indie!

Scordatura:
I saw someone mention Tom Waits. I've been a TW geek for three or four years now -- started with Blood Money/Alice, then progressed (regressed?) all the way back to Swordfishtrombones while also adding in his more current albums. (I'm ignoring his earlier stuff.) I can say with confidence, after trying to get several friends into him, that he is probably not the best place to start. He takes work. Lots of work. The most common reaction is "Eeew!", followed by something like "It sounds like Satan is eating my brain!" (actual words of one friend). He took me some getting used to, too. However once that early period in which all your senses rebel is passed, he is a very very valuable experience; he is continually stretching my musical bounderies with his arrangements and lyrics.

With that said, I'm not sure if he's even indie -- with the exception of a song off of "Good News For People Who Like Bad News", I can't think of anyone he really sounds like. But then, I'm very new to indie myself, so perhaps there are bands on this thread that are Waits-influenced.

No one that I've seen has mentioned Mercury Rev yet, either. I just got Deserter's Songs the other day and it is really, really good. I'm liking it a lot. There's a lot of orchestration, but it doesn't seem syrupy or overbearing. No trouble with accessibility for me, so if a fellow indie neophyte could make a recommendation, I think that'd be it.
