New to Indie!
Shinguuji:
okay, as said in the title, I'm new to the indie scene/music, I wish to try out some Indie music for a change in taste, perhaps you could suggest some songs based on my preference and history below, I listened to Banshee beat as recommended in the front page, simply because its so shocking(the comic i mean...)
A little history about me, I started out listening to grunge/punk rock slightly before the whole scene exploded, and slighly into the beginning of the scene, I listened to it because it sounded nice, yet was loud and angsty enough for my tastes then, listened to bands like limp bizkit, blink 182, etc. i don't listen to them at all now, except for arvil lavinge(i'm a pop whore now, more on that later)
then i progressed to heavy metal, not so much of the heavy genre, but rather, the '70's' rock scene, bands like val halen, iron maiden, black sabbath, aerosmith, ac/dc, led zepplin, etc. loved it because it had a 70's feel, was loud(i was angsty then), and fun, still listen to a little bit of heavy metal...
then comes the part where i turn into a pop whore, heavy metal was too loud for me, and this is the time where the RNB/rap scene is expanding, I hate RNB/rap to the very core of me, and still hate it, the very few that can really do RNB is sidelined by what i consider posuers, so i decide to listen to pop, sure, it has no 'culture' nor 'scene' or whatever, but i've never been in music for the those two things anyway, i like nice sounding songs, and i suddenly become 'one of the masses' with no preference for songs, so what? everyone else is either trying to act like they're black(rap), or that they're cultured clubber(RNB) when in fact they're just one of the masses.... I also listen to chinese pop(which is more pop that pop is, it contains 90% ballards and close to 100% of the songs are love songs)...
I listen to a mix of everything except RNB now, my favourite songs are the really poppy ones like 'behind these hazel eyes' 'if you come to me', most snoop dogg raps(yes, i know its rap, but i like it...he can really do it right) etc.
maybe you could explain the 'indie' type of music to me, seems really interesting and unique, banshee beat was very very nice, i enjoyed it a lot, i'm hoping for more 'nice' music rather than 'interllectual' or whatever rubbish people choose to call bad music, seems to me that many people just pick a popular song out of the radio, try to like it and then, call it great, when in fact it sounds terrible, i just enjoy nice music, that's it, so throw out a few nice songs, if i like them, i'll go deeper, if not, then its ok, at least banshee beat was a blast....

I agree with that guy. ^ Indie is such a vague term. But most people are refering to the Indie Rock scene when they say "indie." And also I'm not trying to force my taste on you but in order to suggest something, you have to like it. So I shall suggest these:
(Band - Specific song)
Rilo Kiley - Paints Peeling (this song really made me like the band)
Ben Kweller - Commerce, Tx
Girl In A Coma - Their Cell
Bloc Party - Banquet
Wilco - Heavy Metal Drummer
Stars - Ageless Beauty
Bands that I have no specific song for but also recommend:
Hot Hot Heat (They're likable. Alot of people are snobs about them but you should try them out and form your own opinion.)
The New Pornographers (I'm actually in the process of trying these guys out.)

hey. i understand where you are coming from, a few years ago i was like that myself. i got into classic rock and that that it was the only music out there. my friend introduced me to more of the "emo" stuff and then i gradually moved to indie. my friend told me about the weakerthans and i loved them so i went on their website and followed the links, see what bands they were connected with. i went to their old label site, saw what bands were there. then i got into clann zu, propagandhi, and greg macpherson. i saw who they played with, listened to them, talked to friends who knew something about music, listened to those bands, found label-mates and tour-dates and eventually a passion for indie rock. look at the label sites (saddle creek, you can find bright eyes, cursive, the faint) and sites like betterpropaganda.com. with that site you can search a band and see what bands are like it, same goes with epitonic.com, though it's never updated anymore.
i hope that helped and it wasn't just me rambling.
i find when i am introducing people to this music they generally like the weakerthans and metric the most, and of course the arcade fire. also sufjan stevens. i force him upon everyone because to me is god. i mean, incredible.

Indie is considered a type of sound now, actually.
The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I
Interpol - Turn On the Bright Lights
Mock Orange - Mind is Not Brain
The Shins (everything)
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (yeah, that's right; I'm eating my words)
Death Cab for Cutie - Something About Airplanes, We Have the Facts, and The Photo Album; the rest, not counting the EP's, are lame)
Built to Spill (everything)
The Ponys (they sound very classic-rockish but do maintain their own identity; plus, they have a great drummer)
ayePod:
The Decemberists
Sufjan Stevens
probably all the bands on SubPop.
