Anyone said The New Pornographers?

er, check out the old Elephant 6 stuff too.

Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control and the like.

Re "all the bands on Sub Pop:"
Grab yourself a few label samplers, they're cheap and they're usually aimed at selling you on new bands.

Some good indie rock labels are Sub Pop, Kill Rock Stars, Matador, Touch & Go, DeSoto, Merge, Saddle Creek, K, Up, Kranky, Drag City, Arts & Crafts, Emperor Jones, and Thrill Jockey.

Also, since you have a classic rock background, I'd suggest two bands: the Hold Steady and the Rye Coalition. They are both heavily influenced by Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC and so on.

I said The New Pornographers. :(

IronOxide:
I recomend Iron and Wine for mellow guitar goodness, that stuff can be fun as well.

EDIT: And Deerhoof, Deerhoof is the shit.

Indie is considered a type of sound now, actually.

Could you explain what type of sound that is? I am really starting to dislike ANYTHING being called Indie, but if there is a legitamate sound (of which, I admit, I am very skeptical) then I guess I can see why people use it.

I saw a freaking CURE record sold on ebay called Indie, for Pete (and Pete)'s sake.

Indie is becoming the new buzzword for "HEY KIDS BUY THIS" by ad execs.. like Alternative became. It's a drag, but it was bound to happen eventually. It's just a word anyways, good music will still come out.
