I would argue that the music video is an abused art.  While, on one hand, we have the ever-so-questionable content of MTV, we also see works like Gantz Graf, where the audio and visuals are perfectly calibrated for maximum effect.  While the video has always been a promotional tool, one can look at the works of such artists as Chris Cunningham and realize that the medium has artistic merit.  So, without further ado...

www.pleix.net

Did videos for many different artists.  Their wry sense of humor and pastiche of 3D Graphics with media collage is both compelling and original.

Best music video ever made:
"Windowlicker" by Aphex Twin, directed by Chris Cunningham.

Best video of 2005 so far:
Three 6 Mafia "Stay Fly" (You'd think "Windowlicker" would contradict that, but oddly, no)
(runner-up: "16 Military Wives" by the Decemberists)

Video I'm currently digging:
"Ibi Dreams of Pavement (A Better Day)" by Broken Social Scene

Last video that made me love a song:
"Sugar, We're Going Down" by Fall Out Boy

(Plenty of music video love from me.)

This is a probably a pretty typical answer, but the video for Glosoli by Sigur Ros is incredible.

Ha, I am copying lastclearchance as it's too early to be original.

Best music video ever made:
(tie) Daft Punk - Around the World by Michel Gondry / Seether & Amy Lee - Broken / Johnny Cash - Hurt.

Best video of 2005 so far:
Fiona Apple - O' Sailor

Video I'm currently digging:
Fiona Apple - Fast As You Can

Last video that made me love a song:
No Doubt - Simple Kind of Life

I'm clearly not very indie. I'm working on it.

With the little insane Japanese girl who kicks ass and performs brain swap operations? I think you may mean the Coldcut video for 'Come On My Selector'. Still Chris Cunningham though meaning a kickass video.

I have way too many favourite music videos (i'm an ever so slight music video geek) but some of my favourites would be..

QOTSA's - Go With The Flow
Gorrilaz - Rock The House
Beck - Epro
The Concreates - You Can't Hurry Love
Lemon Jelly - The Shouty Track
Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Pin
Bjork - Human Behaviour, Pagan Poetry, All Is Full Of Love
Psapp - About Fun (http://www.theleaflabel.com/video/45.mov)
Radiohead - The Bends and Go To Sleep
Supergrass - Mary

In short, lot's of fangirly love for design team, Shynola.

Hmmm..and my two favourite music videos for this year would be the one for Hifana's Wamano (http://www.hellolove.tv/media/promos/cr_wamono.mov) and Ratatat's video for Cherry. The first one i watched on repeat for about a week.

Beck - Deadweight
Blur - The Universal
Ben Folds - Rockin' The Suburbs
Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc.
Believe - The Chemical Brothers
Out Of Control - The Chemical Brothers
Setting Sun - The Chemical Brothers

Does Pink Floyd's The Wall Movie count as a Music Video?
It's basically a really long one for the whole album

Type O Negative - I Don't Wanna Be Me

-ToN, as always, with tongues firmly in cheek.

Plus, can't find 'em decent online:

Amorphis - Black Winters Day
Ancient Rites - Victory or Valhalla
Bathory - One Rode to Asa Bay
Behemoth - As Above, So Below
Dark Tranquillity - Monochromatic Stains (ZOMG expressionism)
Deathstars - Syndrome
Dimmu Borgir - The Mourning Palace
Finntroll - Trollhammaren
Impaled Nazarene - Armageddon Death Squad
Motorhead - God Save the Queen
Satyricon - Mother North
Therion - To Mega Therion

Plus of course, and this is a given, all the Immortal videos. Especially CALL OF THE FUCKING WINTERMOON! If you don't know what I speak of, you've lived a sad life, devoid of laughing at that dude. The dude in the hat. and the cape.

The Aquabats!- "Fashion Zombies!"
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra- "A Quick Drunkard"
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra- "Down Beat Stomp"
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra- "Enter the Dragon" (this is actually more like just a live clip, but it's still cool.)

i also like the music videos to Jawbreaker's "Fireman" and The Presidents of the United States of America's "Peaches"

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice". A career highlight for Mr. Slim, Spike Jonze and Christopher Walken. More than likely responsible for my obsession with Walken.

Good old Weapon of Choice.  Never fails to amuse.

One lesser known one is "Late At Night" by Future Shock UK.  Subtle, yet mindbending image collaging.  http://www.ne-o.co.uk/fshock.html

I wish to draw attention as well to the excellent collection "WarpVison," which includes all the Aphex Twin videos, as well as a cross-section of everything Warp Records.

There was this particularly fascinating piece...music by Prefuse 73, visuals by the one-and-only Designers Republic.  Ultraminimalism at its finest.

And damn that Squarepusher video is good stuff.

anything by sigur ros, but especially:

vidrar vel til loftarasa.

favourite music video ever. it made me cry, and then got off my computer and go for a walk to the beach, and think for a long time.

it's beautiful, and innocent, and pure, and tragic....

and i really like most radiohead music videos, i forget which ones exactly, haven't watched them in a while and my memory is poor.

the "just" one is great.

OH MY GOD YES! That was brilliant!

Others people may have missed:
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Coldplay - The scientist
Oasis - The importance of being idle
Madness - Baggy trousers
Bjork - It's oh so quiet
Kylie Minogue - Come into my world  (sorry, but its hypnotic)
and
JAMIROQUAI - VIRTUAL INSANITY!!!!

I'm afraid i don't see many indie videos :(

What was the name of that Radiohead (i think) video where the guy had his head in a bowl that was filling up with water? That's what you call "suffering for one's art"

Actually, that's what I call "a really boring video."

Also, although I know everyone on this board hates Coldplay, I have to say that the video for "The Scientist" is really pretty good.

Hurrah! Someone from the QC-universe who is not afraid to admit this!
Lots of people (excluding you guys, since you're all very clever) think that Chris Martin's mouth was digitally placed on top, but he really had to sing it backwards, and pay attention to the way his mouth was contorted. Not as easy as you'd think. But then again I'm sure someone will prove me wrong. So....yeah :)

I think it's really good and he must be very talented in a strange way to pull off the backwards singing but the end irks me.  Has anyone noticed that when he gets into the car it's not that badly damaged but if you watch as it rolls down the hill it clearly get's completely smashed.

There's a video with a similar style that's on the Jonze DVD, I can't remember the name of it.  Someone else around here must have it and be able to fill in.  I love that Directors Series, my favourite is the Cunningham one.  It's got a couple of Aphex Twin videos, the Coldcut video that's been talked about and a wicked Portishead vid.  I firmly recommend that series to anyone who loves music television.

For the record, Jack Johnson's video for..."Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" I think? has the same thing.
