The other day I was in the lovely city of Glasgow (me and my friends we're wandering round the shops playing on the pre-sale Xbox 360's :-)) and we went into this LAN center which had like 30-40 PC's all linked up. Basically you go in, pay for however long you want to play and play against people in there or you play peeps on the internet. We got a free hour for signing up :-) IT WAS AWESOME! That was the first time I really played CSS and I loved it.

So I'm thinking about getting CSS for my home computer, but before I do I want to know what SPEC people who play it would reccomend! 'cause the minimum specs are always pretty shitty. So I wanna know what you play with and if it's decent :-)

My computer at the moment (bearing in mind I don't play many games on the PC (i'm an xbox kid)

I have:

AMD Athlon 200+ 1.67 GHZ Proccessor
224 MB Ram
(please remember I'm pretty piss poor when it comes to computer set ups. So if you try to explain something, please bear with me :-))

I think I'm gonna have to upgrade this a bit for optimum playing.

Also I just wanna hear about the general appreciation of CSS

not gona happen.  p..s you didnt post your videocard. im gonna assume some integrated whateer.

anyhow: the source engine is pretty hard to run, and will with those stats.  224 ram (A really odd number) is about 800mbs short for it looking good.  also, processor is a bit slow D:

I've gotten HL2 running (smoothly, no less) on an AXP 1600+/GeForce2/512mb RAM, so it shouldn't be too terribly difficult to run.  Get a cheap videocard (6600 GT, I would recommend) and another DIMM or two of ram (which is insanely cheap, but get PC3200 instead of PC2700; if a deal looks too good, prob the latter).  But as long as you don't mind low-res textures, shouldn't be too *terribly* difficult to finagle.

Heck, download the HL2 demo, see how it runs.

Not to go against the grain of the thread (<- lies) but I really cannot stand CSS.

Why? It's too bloody frustrating. players basically come in three varieties: the complete n00bs who think it works like any other deathmatch, the good players and the godlike players.

I'd place myself as being average-good. I can reliably score a headshot with most of the weapons in the game.

The frustration arises from the fact that death, in CSS, is BORING. You spend the rest of the round, however long that lasts, watching other people play.

the other frustration is that, regardless of how many rounds there are in a game, it's damn near impossible for a team that suffers defeat in the first round to win thereafter, as they have to spend funds on re-equipping, while the winning side starts to rack up a collosal amount of money- more than enough to re-equip team members who fell in the previous round. After two or three rounds, you wind up in the situation where one side is wielding nothing but pistols, and the other side is packing helmeted kevlar, two or three types of grenade apiece, plenty of spare ammo, and a good gun. in such situations, it really does become almost impossible for even the most skilled teams to turn the tide.

My final gripe is that the elite few players (there's one here at my university called "fak3") can single-handedly take on an entire opposing team and win. the guy I just mentioned can score headshots using a decent pair of stereo headphones - he hears where the incoming enemy soldier is, judges where they'll be in three seconds, judges where their head will be at that point, aims there and... splat. One shot. Headshot. through a door. without ever seeing the target.

I played it for a while, and just realised that it's not as much fun as it first appears.

I prefer "Dystopia" myself.

Hrm.  It'd be a bit difficult to play the game "properly" on that rig, but it would run.

As to CSS...  I've never managed to figure out where the hell to aim.  I could roll people in Q3, but not CSS.  Just... failed.  All my pro buddies can roll entire teams, but...  Yeah.  Not my game.

Ok thanks.

More ram, possibly a beter processor, and maybe a new video card (although it should be fine. It works with most thing and CSS didn't seem TOO advanced graphically)

I'll download the Half Life 2 demo and try it out.

that shouldn't be too expensive to get set-up

Magic.

Hrm.  CSS is pretty graphically advanced.  Just that you can turn it off.  Turn it off, watch the block-like figures run around.  Turn it up...  Nice.

Has anyone played CS:S Team DM? Some servers have it working. You don't have to wait after you die and you don't buy weapons.

It's bliss.

I think all the server has to do is to go into the console and type in deathmatch 1  .

You're really low on memory.  Running 224 with that proccessor doesn't seem to do much for you.  I suggest you to buy a new PC instead of "upgrading" it.  Over the years, I've tuned my "Civic" to run more like a Ferrari and I'm fed up.  I'm finally getting one built before Christmas.  The store that's building mine just sent me the quotation and everything seems to be pretty bad-ass.  I just can't believe I'm paying $120 CDN for a tower.  I've always thought those things were almost free!

I figure I might just completely gut the tower and replace it all. My dad does that kinda thing anyways. So it'll be cheaper than a shop building me one eh.

I'll save up and get loads more RAM, a better processor and maybe a new graphics card. Eventually I plan on putting more space on my Hard drive but it's fine for the moment.

Edit: When I say my dad does this I mean as a hobby. (i.e. for friends/family not professionally) He tried to get a job doing it but when he was at school they didn't do IT so he couldn't. So I won't get any parts cheaper...pffft.

I think the first step you should take is getting a new motherboard.

I think I would say just build a new computer.  It's a larger initial investment yes, but it's just a whole lot easier.

I would get a new mobo, I'd aim for something that has pci-e slots.  More and more graphic cards will be produced for pci-e.  So you can make the jump now and take a smaller(-ish) hit to your wallet and save yourself the headache later or you can just wait it out, but then you have to make sure all your existing componants work with older parts. (Particularly annoying, I have a geforce 6600 that I can't use due to pci-e).

Whether or not you want to go with a 64 bit processor or just use a 32 bit processor is entirely up to you.  Personally I'm going to switch to 64 bit after christmas.

As far as ram goes, I would definetly upgrade. The only thing you have to worry about is whether or not the memory you have will be compatible with a new mobo/processor.  I would check and see if it's ddr/ pcXXXX.

Just don't mind me if you already know this.

Nay it's quite helpful. I know fuck all about computers really, I can just do stuff on them...

:-) Thanks for the advice and such.

I'll consult my accountant (bank machine) and then run to daddy asking for money/help/free stuff/food :-)

Looks like a re-build it is...I'm glad I get money at christmas.

Alright, EVERYONE who has every played counterstrike, listen up.
http://www.naturalselection.org/

Download it, Install it, Love it.  BEST mod of any game.  There is a source version coming, but this only works if you have the original (not the 2nd) Half-Life.

It's an RPG / RTS / FPS . . think of it as, Starcraft as a FPS without the protoss.

I got CS:S and HL@ working on my peice of shit computer with an athlon 848 mhz processor, 384mb of RAM and a geforce 2 graphics card. I was so proud. The game gives a warning that it won't work on my graphics card but it does anyway. You shouldn't have a problem running it.
