Essential metal albums?

(1/9) > >>

Soidanae:
What're some absolutely vital metal albums every idiot who enjoys metal should own?
I have a definite feeling there are a lot I'm missing...

Black Sabbath: Paranoid
Iron Maiden: Number of the Beast through Seventh Son.
Judas Priest: Painkiller, Screaming for Vengenance
Metallica: Master of Puppets
Apocalyptica: Reflections
Lacuna Coil: Halflife EP
Megadeth: Megadeth EP
Wintersun: Wintersun
Demonoid: Riders of the Apocalypse
Sirenia: At Sixes and Sevens, An Elixir for Existence
Tristania: Widow's Weeds

Yeah, that's mildly pathetic.

La Creme:
Helloween - Walls Of Jericho
Metallica - Kill 'Em All (even though I don't really like it much)
Liquid Tension Experiment - s/t
Sabbat - Dreamweaver (it's all I have by 'em, but from what I can tell, very important stuff)
Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force

KharBevNor:
If Lacuna Coil has one at all it's Comalies. Demonoid and Sirenia are a bit too obscure for 'essential', I would say. I mean, when you say essential, you're looking for the definitive stuff, the stuff that's important to understanding the history and evolution of metal, or just the plain awesome stuff.

I would personally say:

Acid Bath - When The Kite String Pops
Amorphis - Tales from the Thousand Lakes
Ancient Rites - Dim Carcosa
Atheist - Piece Of Time
At The Gates - The Red in the Sky Is Ours
Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle
Bathory - Bathory
Bathory - Blood on Ice
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Burzum - Burzum/Aske
Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery
Death - Human
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Exodus - Bonded By Blood
Immortal - Battles in the North
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Judas Priest - British Steel
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Metal Church - Metal Church
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Ministry - Psalm 69
Motorhead - Ace of Spades
Moonspell - Irreligious
My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
Napalm Death - Scum
Paradise Lost - Gothic
Sabbat - History of a Time to Come
Sepultura - Arise
Skyclad - Wayward Sons of Mother Earth
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Stormtroopers of Death - Speak English or Die
Theatre of Tragedy - Velvet Darkness They Fear
Therion - Theli
Twisted Sister - Stay Hungry
Type O Negative - October Rust
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal
Venom - Black Metal

...I'll stop now because I'm just going ott, but all those albums are awesome. And if you have a handle on them all, you'll be able to talk the talk, metal-wise. Plus, you should also of course, know your roots: Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Rainbow, Jimmy Hendrix, Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy etc.

RUMBLEMOOSE:
Quick question for Khar (or whoever): I noticed Burzum is on your list, but nothing by Dimmu Borgir. Are they out of favor or do I just have crappy taste in symphonic black metal?

...and I'd suggest Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia by Dimmu Borgir. That's all I can really add to the lists, though.

KharBevNor:
Dimmu are a bit boring, and muchos out of favour nowadays. Their old stuff is good, but I really wouldn't say essential. I mean, you could probably actually make a case for, say, Cradle of Filth's 'Dark Faerytales...' simply for it's influence, but I wouldn't put DB on an all-time list.

You should try Illnath and Cryptic Wintermoon if you enjoy that sort of thing btw.
