I've been a big fan of Iron & Wine for a long time, any sugestions for indie folk?

A lot of people will tell you to try out some of the newer "avant-folk" stuff that's been en vogue recently, like Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, and the recent Vashti Bunyan reissue, but I think that if you're an Iron and Wine fan, you might more readily take to 90's slowcore acts like Low, Radar Brothers, Red House Painters, or maybe Jason Molina's Songs:Ohia or Will Oldham (aka Bonnie "Prince" Billy).

Of course there's the Nick Drake card to play too.

M. Ward (Involuntary, Undertaker)
Nick Drake (Place to Be, Pink Moon)
Sufjan Stevens (To Be Alone With You, Casimir Pulaski Day)

There are song suggestions in the parentheses. There's really no one quite like Sam Beam though. I've been looking for a long time, and these are the closest I've come. I guess it depends on what specifically you like about Iron & wine. Is it his voice, the mild syncopation, subtle harmonies, or instrumentation? Or some combination of those and more?

The new Mogwai album sounds awesome, and I would compare it to Iron and Wine any day.  The slow grooveful tunes and intricate melodies are wher the similarities lie.  I am not too sure on MM though, I havent heard a lot of their stuff yet.

Meh, you may disregard this, but I do like me some wierd folk, and whilst I'm not that keen on Iron and Wine, I would be criminal if I did not recommend:

Current 93 (Get 'Cats Drunk on Copper', 'All the Pretty Horsies' or 'As The World Dissapears...')
Backworld (Get the 'Orchids' EP, 'Anthems From the Pleasure Park' or 'The Fourth Wall')
And though this is probably way too out there, Sol Invictus (Get 'Death of the West', 'Trees in Winter' or 'The Devils Steed') 'tis far-out apocalyptic shit though.

Perhaps it's a little early to start on the C93/LPD/etc. recs...

I'm personally a big fan of David Sylvian's work.  His "Secrets of the Beehive" album may appeal to you, Hawk.

Blackmore's Night is churning out some pretty damned good folk. more medieval than... american ish? I guess. I dunno.


And is the guy from Current 93 the same guy who was in 23 Skidoo? I heard that somewhere, and I do love me some 23 Skidoo. I'll check em out.

Hedningarna(Heathens), a swedish/finnish band that play a kind of fusion folk, should be interesting for you to hear :)

Also the Willard Grant Conspiracy, though they are a bit sombre.
I can wholeheartedly agree with Low, but again they are a bit sombre and melancholic. Suzanne Vega might also be something for you, she has a bit of the same vibe(not counting Woman King) but a different lyrical focus of course.

No. Current 93 are really awesome though.

@nescience: Ah. I would have got that if I hadn't been stoned. Or maybe not, I suck at acronyms a lot of the time.

Blackmore's Night are brilliant, but I find it hard to recommend them to people, because they're just so fucking cheesy. They're not really medieval: more sort of renaissance faire stuff with a rock bent. Best guitar in folk though, probably.

Well, they've got Ritchie fuckin' Blackmore.

Yawning Man - "Rock formations".

Yawning Man was the band who started the whole "desert rock scene" which also includes Kyuss (and everything derived from Kyuss; Hermano, Mondo Generator, Brant Bjork, QOTSA), Fatso Jackson,  Idiot Prayer...
If you have "Welcome to sky valley" (Kyuss) somewhere, put on "Catamaran", that's one of their songs.
You should hear it for yourself, they don't really sound like Kyuss (not as heavy) but it's really good, trust me.

I always thought Yawning Man formed AFTER Kyuss. Never knew Catamaran was a Yawning Man track. I only have Rock Formations though.

Actually, Yawning Man is in its third life and they only released their first album last year, so it's pretty logical that many might be confused...

First life: The band is called Across The River
Second life: The band is called Yawning Man
Then they split.
Then some years ago, if I'm well informed, Mario Lallie reunited the band.
The original version of Catamaran is well spread, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding it (might be hoboquality -very poor- tough)..
