Robots in Disguise.
« on: 13 Jan 2006, 13:42 »

It's been confirmed that a live-action movie version of The Transformers has been in the works for a while now.

Now it seems we have a firm release date (for the US) on 07/04/07.

Details can be found here: http://www.transformerland.com/transformers-the-movie.html

The live-action “Transformers” movie has been set to open nationwide on 07-04-07, it was jointly announced today by DreamWorks Pictures, Hasbro, Inc. (NYSE: HAS), and Paramount Pictures.

The feature, based on the globally popular Transformers franchise, will be directed by Michael Bay (upcoming “The Island,” “Armageddon”) from a screenplay being written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (upcoming “The Island”). Steven Spielberg (“War of the Worlds”) is executive producing the film, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (upcoming “Four Brothers”), Tom DeSanto (“X-Men” and “X2: X-Men United”) and Don Murphy (“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”) serving as co-executive producers.

In making the announcement, DreamWorks head of distribution Jim Tharp stated, “Under the direction of Michael Bay, and with Steven Spielberg executive producing, we know that ‘Transformers’ is going to be the kind of explosive action movie that is perfect for the height of the summer movie season. By staking our claim on the 4th of July, 2007, we ensure that we not only have the time to make this movie the way it should be made, but also to build excitement and awareness leading up to its release.”

Also, here's some test footage from ILM of a robot who looks suspiciously like Sidwinder to me.
http://www.badongo.com/vid.php?file=Transformers+Movi%20%20e+Test+Footage__2006-01-09_tffootage.mpeg&s;=black

I have to say that this is one movie concept that does really excite me. I was a huge Transformers fan as a kid, and I was also a fan of the more recent G1 comics by Dreamwave untill the company went and made themselves bust.

Anyone else a fan, and excitied by this prospect?

I've since found out that the test footage is actually fake, but still, is no-one else excited by this film?

If you've never watched Transformers than you have not LIVED.

I'm just curious; Is this going to take place after the original movie, or is it ignoring the original movie altogether? Because, you know, I want my Optimus.

This could (note 'could') be the best film ever. If done right. And it has good voice actors. And a plot. And they don't completely redesign all the classic transformers to look like ultra modern vehicles. Otherwise it'll be the worst movie ever.

A life action movie? for real?
The idea's a scary though, it could end up like the power rangers movie back in the bad days.

As far as I am aware, this will be a film starting again from the beginning of the G1 universe. Essentially we are talking about the Ark crashing on Earth and of course Optimus and Megatron.

Hopefully it'll have some awesome Stan Bush pseudo metal in the soundtrack; You got the touch, You got the POWERRR!

But seriously, this sounds very exciting indeed. I love the Transformers. Just a few months ago I got a starscream poster just because I needed some Transformers action in my room.

megatron will not be a gun, from what I've heard...so they lose points right there.

I'm sure Spielberg is fighting to have megatron transform into a walkie talkie.

Where did you read this?

The problem with a movie like this, with such a huge and loyal fanbase is that there are bound to be so many rumours and cntroversial points flying around. I really can't see any drama or interest in having thr bad guy transform into a walkie-talkie though..... :-/

I'm not a big Transformers guy, but with Michael Bay directing I can't help but feel like this will be the biggest film disappointment of the decade. Is anyone else concerned about Bay ruining everything? Or am I just being paranoid or too indielitist about my taste in film?

Then I'll continue!

The original series of Transformers? Didn't age well. Armada was godawful. I didn't see Beast Machines, it never aired here. BW Megatron was better than original Megatron. BW and original Optimus are about tied. Dinobot, either version? I liked him as much as Grimlock.

I fear this movie will be awful. But it might be awesome.

It would be to their great advantage if they followed the DreamWave style of storytelling, and just rolled with it (no pun intended) from there.

But there'll probably be some 8 year old kid shouting all his dialogue a-la jake lloyd in Phantom Menace who befriends bumblebee.  Oh, and he'll have a dog named "Rusty" who's smarter than the regular canine, that manages to warn Optimus that the kid's been taken hostage.

Or something.

Sorry, but I'm just curious for a minute. In my wanderings of the Internet, most people have seemed to have a fairly high opinion of Beast Wars. Maybe not "better than the original series", but most have seemed to like it.

I've certainly neevr seen it hated as much as some of you seem to. What exactly are your issues with it?

This thread is for the discussion of the upcoming Transformers film, as Leonidas put up at the beginning.  I invoked the Beast Wars, which leads to everyone now saying how good/bad it was which wasn't the original intent of this thread.

Which is why I then proceeded to ask about THE UPCOMING MOVIE, to get things back on track here.

I'll even start a new topic!  Look!

Call me optimistic, but I do have high hopes that the movie won't be following those lines. I believe that the Transformers story is well enough established that it wouldn't have to have the "annoying kid" making the story clear for the ignorant. It has a huge following in the male 20-30yr range, and that's a pretty huge target audience. Of course there are also the kids to target, but as we have seen with other comparable movies (X-Men, Spider-Man, Batman Begins, etc...), that it is possible to approach this from an adult point of view and still keep the kiddies happy.

I hope.

YES I NECRO'D THIS TOPIC.

Why?  Because the recent Penny Arcade inspired me to go diggin' for information.

So far:

Optimus is going to be a long-nose truck, not the snub-nosed model from G1.  With flames on the side (possibly rumor!)
Bumblebee is a camaro.  a muscle car.  Bumblebee. yeah.
Skorponok!!!!!!
No "mass changing" properties, so who the hell knows how they'll do blaster/soundwave (if at all) and what form they'll give Megatron (fondue pot seems popular here).

Sigh.... BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As if everyone didn't already know it, this movie is going to be shit.  I went over to the forums for about a second and realised that almost everything about it was wrong.  When they are talking about Bumblebee being a fucking Camaro because VW didn't want to give any cars to them, and Prime being a goddamn long-nose truck with flames on the hood you begin to realise that they are not catering this to the old-school fans.  They are name-checking this to old-school fans, and catering for fans of movies like the Fast & the Furious.

Apparently Prime has a fight with a decepticon truck while racing down a freeway.  So it's basically a truck chase scene akin to the thing in one of the shittier Matrix movies.  Fuck you, Michael Bay.

Gen 2 prime was a long nose truck, and if not for the shitty paint job they gave him he was actually pretty cool.  Not as cool as the original, but a good repaint and he would've been sweet.

My guess for Megatron would be an M1 Abrams.

That seems to make the most sense.

They couldn't really do soundwave as he was, anyways...who the hell owns a tape deck anymore?  I guess they could've done him as an MP3 player...with flash cards as the tapes?  I dunno.

But no mass changing also means no Perceptor, Ravage, Rumble, Laserbeak, Insecticons, or the lame autobot cassettes.

I'm crossing my fingers for a Devastator appearance, but I'm not holding my breath.

God I hope not. Some of my best childhood memories involved repeatedly watching the original Transformers movie. I loved that thing to death, and if I had any clue where to buy it (VHS or DVD, I care not), I would pick it up in a flash.

I want the new Transformers movie to be like that. The Ark, the cheesey sci-fi plot, the laser-beam wars, and the colorful robots. FUCK pop culture, FUCK the car-junkies, I want a goddamn Transformers movie that brings back every memory of the original. They had better damn well not fuck it up.

Come to think of it; the autobots never DID partake in energon, did they?  The only real mention they had for consuming anything was in that children's storybook where they were all in a race together and prime's mask-less visage (yes, visage!) was shown.

Autobots: My anti-drug.

I do have a new perspective though, thanks to est.  Shit... I forgot about any gearheads would go out for this, or the matrix truck fight (which I had conveniently forgotten all knowledge of sequels up to this point but anyway).  *sigh* I'm still going to buy a ticket though. :(

also, I very much like Beast Wars because I was to little to remember transformers all that much.

I think here we are witnessing the power of awesome versus the power of suck. Unfortunately, the power of suck seems to be winning. How could the universe be so cruel as to promise me a Transformers movie and then hire Michael Bay to direct it?? It's like some sort of bizarre witch's trick out of a fairy tale.

Oh, who am I kidding. I'll go to see it for the giant robots, and then cry myself to sleep over the rape of my childhood.

Teaser trailer has nothing to do with the actual film from what I heard.  It's literally just a teaser.

Also, as part of a contractual agreement with Hasbro, they're not actually allowed to show what the robots look like until the toy designs are completed.
