techno/electronic indie?

basically italy has a severe lack of indie music.  it's a bit depressing, actually.  i've been trying to explain to a friend over there what exactly indie music is but he's all "nurrr it's all crap nurrrr".

the thing is, i think he's confusing indie with emo, haha.  the only indie music he's heard me listen to is softer stuff like iron & wine while i'm studying.  (yes, i know iron & wine isn't emo.  but cut him some slack, he's doing the best he can to sort through all the american sub-culture that i'm throwing at him.  he's very confused. :P)

anyways... as to the point i'm trying to get at.  he's also really into house/techno music.  so i figured if i could find some indie bands with that sort of sound, i could expose him to something indie he'll actually like.  personally, i'm more of a pop/rock person so i don't know anything about electronic music.  at all.  so i was wondering if any of you had some suggestions that i could bring back to europe with me? :)

thanks!

FRENCH FRENCH FRENCH!

Air, Daft Punk, M83, Phoenix, Hypo, Les Rhythmes Digitales, Zoot Woman.

From the rest of the world, you could try latter-era Boredoms (like Vision Creation Newsun), Saint Etienne, LCD Soundsystem, Junior Senior, the Avalanches, Ladytron, the Go! Team, the Rapture, Annie, Junior Boys, Adult., or something on Bpitch Control like Ellen Allien, or maybe more downtempo stuff like Medicine, Tujiko Noriko, Cornelius, Four Tet, Daedelus, Autechre, etc.  You could even go the fucked-up route and start right in on the Aphex Twin or MB or Wolf Eyes.  "YOU WANT INDIE??  HOW ABOUT EARFUCK???!?!??!"

Anyway, most all of this can be found on iTunes store.  Just listen to the samples to get an idea of the electronic / house aesthetic that these artists have.

Hmm, you could consider Postal Service to be electro-indie and since they are immensly popular (most played track on LastFM since, like, forever) there's a reasonable chance that you're friend might like it.  Thing is it's not at all similar to house or techno music.

I'd go with LCD Soundsystem as mentioned above, particularly Tribulation, that song is awesome.  Throw in maybe some Tom Vek or Clor as well and if he doesn't have a problem with excrutiatingly cute japanesque twee you could try Freezepop.

Chikinki are a little more on the rock side but they might do.  When they played at my SU they ended the last song of their set with three minutes of frenzied drum and bass, it was weird.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Oh, I listen to the Postal Service, but yeah... it's a bit too far from house/techno.

I like freezepop, but i have a feeling it would probably make him punch things :-P  i was actually listening to Sprite yesterdy and thinking to myself "you know, I bet if Michele heard this he would really hate it, and probably hate me for liking it". xD

Thanks for all your other suggestions, though, I'll check them out asap!

Wideband Network - Universe

ok so it's more like synthpop with acoustic bits in, but seriously, check out the song "The Silence" if you don't believe me. he needs to hear this stuff.

in a similar vein, Apoptygma Berzerk have gone all acoustic/mainstream-indie with their latest album ("You And Me Against The World") so maybe grab him a copy of that too

also Röyksopp cannot be stressed or repeated enough. their new album is a work of sheer awesome.

Lassique Bendthaus
Charles Webster
Denver McCarthy
Chris J
Aril Brikha
Mr. Velcro Fastener
Erlend Oye's solo stuff (mostly electronic)
Tosca has a new remix album out
Fischerspooner
Abe Duque
Fred Everything
The Juan Maclean
Mr. Scruff
John Tejada
Dennis DeSantis
DNTel

to name a few

Please note that a lot of these, while technically falling in the "indie" category, aren't really considered "indie" electronic.  Indie electronic is hard to really describe.  My suggestion in terms of that would be to direct your friend to Morr Music, since most of their catalog is pretty much, in my mind, the definition of electronic that seems to be popular in indie circles (outside of DFA Records, The Chemical Brothers and things like Venetian Snares for some reason).  Still, most of the artists above are on independent labels.

Definitely.
For weirder electronica there is always Autechre, Aphex Twin and some Experimenta Audio Research.

The Faint? I don't know if you'd classify that as indie though.

A lot of good suggestions here, but I would just like to underline Tom Vek.

Tom Vek.

There you go.

I'd definitely add All Night Radio. Probably also Harmonic 33, Schneider TM and (to some degree) Mint Royale.
Actually, this might be a good starter compilation to get your mitts on.  Hope it helps!

American Analog Set (although I guess they are like the postal service in the respect that they are pretty far away from house/techno)

Kraftwerk are meant to be good, although I haven't listened to them ever so I dunno fo' sure.

They're really more of a rock band that happens to use electronic instruments on a rare occasion.

Similarly, I'd suggest De Novo Dahl, but same principle.

Richie Hawtin.

Purest dance music I've yet come across.  Remarkably erudite and textured, considering.

When someone confuses indie and emo, tell them that one (emo) is a genre, and the other is a name given to bands on an independant label.

That's not entirely true. There are plenty of bands considered "indie" that are not on independent labels. Since I'm too lazy to write up a better definition, I will direct you to the Wikipedia article on indie music, which does a decent job of defining "indie."

Quote from: Wikipedia
Such usages of "indie" may be considered inaccurate for various reasons: for one, stylistic qualities are often not accurately correlated to commercial independence or adherence to indie principles (this is particularly true when a sound becomes popular, its leading exponents are signed by major labels and more success-oriented bands and production teams attempt to imitate the style; this ultimately culminates in commercially driven artists sporting the same stylistic traits the "indie" artists of a year ago had). Secondly, however pervasive any style of music (even one as broadly defined as "guitar pop" or "post-punk rock") may become at a particular time, it by definition cannot embody all of indie music, as, by indie's nature, there will be indie artists, labels and entire local scenes operating outside of this style and its definitions

Plus I hate the words "Jangly guitar pop."

In my opinion, indie has become a buzzword that anybody uses to give their band cred, not a genre. The Arcade Fire. INDIE. Franz Ferdinand. INDIE. And so on. In my opinion using other terms to use these bands would be better.

Plus, stuff like http://soyouwanna.com/site/syws/indierock/indierock.html">this exists because people use indie as a genre.
