I am way to depressed, and I realized that I have depressing music only (elliott smith style stuff). So I need some happy music, or at least energetic. I like Architecture in Helsinki, The Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, and the Decemberists. Please help!

Listening to Jack Johnson is anything but a joyous experience.  It actually depresses me, since I realize how sad the state of the world must be when many consider him to be an amazing guitar player, lyricist, and singer...

New Pornographers (go with Electric Version) and Polyphonic Spree (The Begining Stages Of...) are amazing ideas though.  Basically anything by either of these two bands will wok gloriously.  Some other bands full of good fun are The Shins (Chutes Too Narrow), Belle and Sebastian (If You're Feeling Sinister), and The Flaming Lips (The Soft Bulletin).  Oh, and you can't go wrong with some early Beatles.

Yes.  In a word.

Check out London 0, Hull 4 by the Housemartins for a whole bunch of incredibly upbeat, bouncy songs.  Which just happen to have incredibly cynical lyrics - but hey, if you're going to be bitter at least you should dance while you're doing it!  Also some old-school soul: the Four Tops (before Motown became shit - their first two-and-a-half albums, basically), Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett (R.I.P.), and Sam Cooke: Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963.  If you're in a mood for strutting 'round your pad, get some "New Testament" Count Basie: The Atomic Mr. Basie and Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings.  Big band jazz has never been better.  While we're on jazz, try some hard bop: especially Clifford Brown and Max Roach's self-titled album (so happy it has a bright orange cover).  For something more recent, try Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: sure, they've been raved about ad nauseum, but their album really is just about the most up-beat, danceable rock album I've heard in the last year.

That's off the top of my head.  I don't have my C.D. collection immediatly to hand.

I disagree with the White Stripes and Wilco.  They are certainly amazing bands, but they aren't the sort that you would say play "happy music".  Maybe they have some songs to that effect, but overall, their songs just don't come across in that way.

The Mad Capsule Markets. They're ridiculously heavy, but ridiculously happy as well! It's the happiest hardcore-punk you'll hear! It's why I love them. They cheer me up a lot. I get both of things I want when I'm down - heavy music, and cheering up!

Meh, most of his good albums are weird and melancholy. Or maybe I just like depressing music :P

I guess I'm going to suggest Dressy Bessy. I haven't heard a lot by them, but they are just up-beat, simple fun, from what I've heard. Also their name rhymes. There is no way a band with a rhyming name like that could possibly be depressing.

Definitely, and also:

Andrew Bird (He's not energetically happy like The New Pornographers, but he's relaxing and he makes you think, which is a good thing if you're depressed.)

For condensed sunshine, listen to The Shins, and the aforementioned Flaming Lips (esp. Clouds Taste Metallic).

I don't think it was Burton dying as much as it was Lars and James running out of Mustaine's writing to rip off.

But I've already talked about this.

I'm interested in seeing said LJ, though.
