The other half of my list is ready:
The Decemberists - The Infanta
Rufus Wainwright - Danny Boy
Neutral Milk Hotel - King of Carrot Flowers, Pt. 1
Neutral Milk Hotel - Two Headed Boy
The Unicorns - I Was Born (A Unicorn)
Pavement - Cut Your Hair
Joanna Newsom - Inflammatory Writ
The Magnetic Fields - I Don't Want to Get over You
The Boy Least Likely To - I'm Glad I Hitched my Apple Wagon to your Star
Futureheads - Hounds of Love
The Mountain Goats - Dilaudid
</middle finger>
I enjoy a good deal of those songs without reservation. I've listened to Newsom on repeat for hours at a time. I guess we aren't coming from the same place here.
I was more in tune with the first half. I'm imagining a young British gentleman in the typical version of Hell, and he's sitting nicely on a rock with sensible shoes and a tan tie, and suddenly "Your Body Is a Wonderland" starts playing on repeat. He tries flinging himself off a cliff, but that doesn't work. He tries to beat himself to death, but he can't escape it. Finally, he looks down into a pool of his own blood, and instead of his own reflection, he sees John Mayer, singing back at him.
EDIT: If you need any convincing to listen to rap music, just listen to this one line from the great Eazy-E:
"But mister dope man, dope man, can I get a hit?/No ho, but
you could get my duck sick."
I should probably feel childish for loving that line as much as I do, but what can I say?
