I don't really know many indie people, so I'll just pick the more mainstream out of my favourite bands list so we can have a fun party without people going 'who the fuck are these guys?'

You see, I put Paul Gilbert in there, who's really unknown, but completely accessible.  I've put his CDs on at a party with no serious music people (i.e. none of my friends) and everybody loved it.  I just like his take on that sort of music because it's 1) really well-done and 2) he's got a really cool sense of humour in his stuff.

I'd host Santana, The Beatles, and The Doors.  Pretty straightforward really good music.  You could dance, you could take drink or take drugs, you could head off to somewhere secluded and have hot sex (preferably with Jim Morrison), everyone's happy.
