8. The Clash (Punk)
9. Phish (Jam)
10. Nirvana (Grunge/Alternative)
11. Frank Zappa (Humour/Crazy Rock)
12. Syd Barret (Acid/Stoner Rock)
13. Bob Dylan (Folk/Rock)
14. The Grateful Dead (Psychedelic)
15. Johnny Cash (Country)
16. James Brown (Funk)
17. Marvin Gaye (Motown)
18. Bob Marley (Reggae)

So, if you guys could help me with this I could greatly appreciate it.

People love responding to these kinds of threads, because we all love to try to foist our musical tastes upon others. Thank you for posting what you already like as well. It makes suggesting stuff much easier.

Check out Jeph's RL (recommended listening) for a start.

I will add some of my own to your corresponding likes:

1. The Bees (aka A Band of Bees): sample track - 'These are the ghosts'
4. Grandaddy: 'Summer Here Kids'
5. Robert Johnson: 'Love in Vain'
6. Charles Mingus: anything off Mingus Ah Um
7. The Greenhornes: 'I've Been Down'
8. The Undertones: 'Teenage Kicks'
10. Meat Puppets: 'Backwater'

Thanks to everyone! Let more reccomendations flow!

Let's see, I like to consider myself at least reasonably knowledgable about jazz, so I'll try to suggest some other things based on Miles Davis.  The problem is, he changed a bit throughout his career.  What Miles albums do you like?  Or do you like all of them? (up through Bitches Brew, because after that it's clear that his mind is definitely too far gone from all the drugs)

Heh heh.

I pretty much like all his stuff, albeit his early work more then his later era. (Although I think Bitches Brew is one of his best albums.)

Okay, try:
Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers
Clifford Brown
John Coltrane (earlier stuff, he tends to get pretty out there)
Art Blakey
Paul Chambers
Bill Evans

also, everyone here would probably enjoy Brad Mehldau's Live in Tokyo album.  It's solo jazz piano, but with a modern twist.

And now to go to work, which I've decided is going to be my last free gig, ever (except maybe for charity, if I actually somehow manage to get famous).

Since I have some off-time from work, I shall attempt to make artist (and sometimes album) recommendations for each of your entries where I can, then give you some triangulated recommendations afterwards:

1. The Beatles (British Invasion) -->

The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
The Kinks - Arthur
The Kinks - Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One
The Kinks - Green Village Preservation Society
The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
The Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street

2. Skyclad (Folk Metal)
3. Pink Floyd (Prog Rock) -->

Caravan - In The Land of Pink and Grey
King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King
Popol Vuh - Hosianna Mantra

Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I

5. B. B. King (Blues) -->

Muddy Waters
Howlin' Wolf
Otis Redding

6. Miles Davis (Jazz) -->

Depending which Miles you're into
John Coltrane
Charlie Mingus

T. Rex - Electric Warrior
Hendrix

Magazine - Real Life
The Damned - Damned Damned Damned

9. Phish (Jam)
10. Nirvana (Grunge/Alternative) -->

(Nirvana influences)
Vaselines - The Way of the Vaselines
Raincoats - Raincoats
Meat Puppets - II
Meat Puppets - Up on the Sun
Pixies - Bossanova

11. Frank Zappa (Humour/Crazy Rock) -->

Capt. Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica

Boredoms - Pop Tatari

12. Syd Barret (Acid/Stoner Rock)
13. Bob Dylan (Folk/Rock) -->

John Cale - Vintage Violence

Jonathan Richmann and the Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers

14. The Grateful Dead (Psychedelic) -->

Shocking Blue - At Home

15. Johnny Cash (Country)
16. James Brown (Funk) -->

Again, depending on era (but I go from your "funk" tag)
Tower of Power
Isley Brothers

17. Marvin Gaye (Motown)
18. Bob Marley (Reggae) -->

Junior Murvin - Police and Thieves
Lee "Scratch" Perry

Beyond giving "If-you-like-artist-X-you-will-like-Y" recommendations, I can say you might like the following albums:

Animal Collective - Sung Tongs (experimental-folk-pop)
Architecture in Helsinki - In Case we Die (lush indie-pop)
Roxy Music - Country Life (glam-art-rock)
Os Mutantes - Everything is Possible! (Brazillian 60s-psych-pop)
Legendary Pink Dots - All the Kings Horses (psychedelic-"doom-folk")
Faust - So Far (Krautrock)
Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson (singer-songwriter)
Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk at Cubist Castle (psychedelic-pop-revival)
XTC - Drums and Wires (power-pop/new-wave)
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson (sicko French pop/rock crooner)
Sloan - One Chord to Another (power-pop revivalists)
The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight (psychedelic rock)
Super Furry Animals - Guerrilla (psychedelic-rock-revival)
Television - Marquee Moon (art-punk)
Talking Heads - 77 (new-wave)
Talking Heads - Remain in Light (new-wave)

That's it for now.

Seeing as you mentioned Metallica in other threads:

If you want something a million billion gajillion times better than Metallica, pre-Load or otherwise, pick up some Testament. You'll want to start with their earlier albums, as they became steadily more death-metally as time went on. Get 'The New Order' first, because it is amazing.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.
