So ive been thinking bout getting an iPod with my Tax rebate and i ask the mighty people of the QC forums about this.
im goin for the 30 gig Ipod Video thing, and wanna know about it from those who have it, as in bad things, good things, or suggest something else.
But i like the thought of having some music play..then watch some scrubs or whatever.
I like that idea

Have they released Scrubs on iPod video? Nonetheless, the only advice I give is to get rid of the shite ear buds that come with the system. They're terrible.

unless you are actually going to use the ipod video and actually put videos on it then i would suggest getting it but if you are going to just use it for mp3s then i would get an original

the 6th gen has a full screen that is touch compatable, wait a couple weeks for it.

i have one and its great. its thinner than ever and the screen looks beautiful. i only have one photo on mine and no videos but the videos did look good when i had some on there. the only thing with the videos is finding the right program to convert the videos to proper format.
i dont know how much sense that made i'm very tired but all in all, a good investment. served me very well driving (when i had a car), goin to college, and for work. worth it

make sure that all your artists are spelt corectly it sucks having 3 folders of "the white stripes" "white stripes" and "the white strips"

screen will have surperficail scratch's no matter how hard you look after it!

also, if you don't have an album name for something, put a . there (doesn't have to be a period, but just something in place of the album name). Sometimes if there's no album name, the song doesn't show up when you're going through your iPod by artist

Got meself a 30GB one and I'm a bit surprised how less scratch it can get, the Nano get scratch even if you simply blow on it.

i thought about blowing on my friends nano and it split into five symetrical peices. it was kinda cool. then he took it back and spent 50$ for an upgrade to the 30 gig. true story. except for the whole breaking thing. but thoes things are fragile.

the iPod Nano is indeed extremely fragile, I mean if you blow on it, it'll be scratched!

the normal iPod now are much more tougher and I'm surprised the back is not that scratched, especially when compared to my father's old 40GB 3G iPod which look extremely worn out.

Just want to raise the idea of mp3 players other than iPods. Don't just blindly go for an iPod, you should shop around, see what else you can get for the amount of money you want to spend. I always shop around first, then if there's no stand-out choice I'll go for the niftiest option (in this case, the iPod). But it'd be annoying to go straight for the trendy thing and then realise a couple days afterwards that there's something else that does the job better.

Ah, but there is. The iPod is one of those rare cases where the most popular choice actually is the best. Admittedly, many people get it just because everyone else has it, but it wouldn't have exploded as it has if it wasn't good to begin with.

That said, I would also advise anyone looking into MP3 players to shop around, but I sincerely doubt you'll find anything that'll beat the iPod in terms of ease of use, design, and software integration. Believe me, I've looked, and I continue to look for any competing devices that might hold a candle to the iPod, but for one reason or another, they all fail miserably.

Anyway. Feel free to dismiss me as a fanboy, as I probably am.

Also: If you do decide on an iPod, consider holding out until April 1, when (it is rumored) Apple will introduce the 6th-generation "true" video iPod.

I just hate the planned obsolescence of iPods... Every single person I know with an ipod has had it die. Every single one. That's nearly 12 iPods in the course of 2 years. I know 3 of those were from poor treatment but the rest we for absolutely no reason. Pretty terrible sucess rate I reckon.
As long as they're under warranty then it's ok but you should most definately go for the super hyper mega extended warranty.
And the head phones they supply are suck. Replace them immediatly, they'll only damage your ears.
That said, iTunes is pretty much the best mp3 software as far as I'm concerned.

This is something I've been hearing a lot of, also. Everyone I know with an iPod has had trouble with them except for me, and yet they keep going back to them because they look all shiny and stuff.

I don't plan on updating my iPod any time soon, but if it ever dies I'm sure as hell gonna look into my options a bit more before jumping for another iPod, because even though their build quality looks good, solid, etc, if anything goes wrong with them you've got to send them back to Apple & wait forever to get it back.

Most of these "faults" have to do with the battery dying after a while. Is it too much to ask for an mp3 player with a removable rechargeable battery pack? One where I can buy a spare one in case the first one dies so that I don't have to send my unit back for "repairs" and have it gone for a month or more?

You can buy ipod batteries from a lot of places online. I replaced the battery in my old 3rd gen one in about 10 mins. Sure it's a bit more complicated than swapping some AA's, but the non-replaceable battery thing is such a myth.

Note: Replacing the battery like that isn't covered by warranty though

I'll admit that iPods are user friendly but I'm not convinced of their durability or longetivity.

There are other MP3 players on the market that have just as easy a user interface and are more rugged. They may not look at shiny or 'cool' and all the iPod owners will make fun of you but for MP3's they are just as good.

I'd like to disagree. It all depends on what you want. I wanted a 20GB just music player with long battery life and a drag and drop file transfer interface. My Iriver does just that. 12-15 hour battery life works fine for me, and I, for one, prefer the joystick to the scroll wheel (and I saved $30). I agree with Est, look for other options, I'm not too familiar with what's out there for video, but iPod can't possibly be the only option.

i have an ipod, but i know people with irivers. they make an amazing mic for the iriver for bootlegging shows. not that i endorse bootlegging shows. but i do endorse the iriver. so many people already have mp3's and it's kind of stupid to convert everything over to itunes.

Um, yeah. iTunes may be set to AAC encoding by default, but iTunes/iPod both support MP3-encoded files. It would be stupid not to, as manufacturers like Sony realized after the iPod's success.

You know, I've never understood what's so great about drag-and-drop. I mean, yeah, you can use Explorer, but frankly, Explorer isn't exactly the greatest music management system ever. I'd much rather just plug my MP3 player in and have it sync itself. To each his own, I guess.

Certain press organizations ran a fun little (painfully obvious) story a couple years back that pointed out that users buying the newest iPod at that time would have to pay almost $10,000 to fill their iPod with music that was bought on iTunes (and, the article pointed out, that was also clearly acquired legally). It would be, if nothing else, an egregious waste of money for Apple to make iPods with such large hard drives if use of that space were out of reach for pretty much the entire music-listening community.

I love the Rio Karma, thought there's horror story about their hard drive failing.

Maybe we have different Ear Buds, but they're one the best sounding headphones you can buy on the market. The only think I don't like about them is that they're 'mug-me' white.

I'm sorry what? They're quite possibly the worst headphones on the market... Not only is the sound quality awful but they also require a tonne of volume just to get some basic clarity. According to an article in the local newspaper they're been actively linked to hearing damage for god's sake...

I'd just like to chip in and say I find the stock iPod earbuds satisfactory. Compared to the earbuds included with other MP3 players these days, I'd even rate them above average. They certainly don't compare to a pair of $50 in-ear headphones, but they're honestly not that bad. Anyone who's experienced audio through higher-end headphones will obviously find them lacking, but the rest of us are less discriminating.

Also, "they've been actively linked to hearing damage"? Are you serious? All headphones can cause hearing loss if you turn up the volume too high. How are the iPod earbuds any different in this respect?

I'm not sure. According to the article they did. I don't remember it accurately and NZ media isn't exactly reknowned for it's good reporting.
Suffice to say; if you love music then buy new headphones. They're not satisfactory, I've had $10 headphones that did a better job than my friend's ipod headphones. Stop being stingey and shell out $60 for a good pair, they'll last 5 times longer and sound 5 time better.

Oh god. I bought the iRiver 20GB. I was quite honestly relieved when that thing died after 2 weeks and I could go get a different player with my warranty. I despised everything about that thing. You could only change the volume when you were in the music playing menu and you had to use the all purpose scroll pad to change it so you never actually knew if it was gonna change the volume or do something totally unexpected. The playback was jumpy and it would skip around every time the track changed. Sometimes it even flat out destroyed mp3's on it, and other times it would alter frequencies and change the eq settings without me telling it to. Not to mention that it's only compatible software was WMP 10 (eww)! That thing was bloody awful. Like I said it just froze up after 2 weeks of use, and nothing would bring it back to life. I took it back and got the Creative Zen 20GB. That is one solid piece of machinery. I bet I could chuck it against a wall and it would be unaffected. The only complaint I have is that there is no clock on the playback screen, you need to go into the options to see what time it is. But that’s like sex compared to the friggen iRiver.

Rio Karma, brilliant mp3 player, it's ergonomic, easy, ethernet sharing, etc. brilliant mp3 player, thought it's not as good as the iPod in term of style and design.
