hey, I hate to perpetuate Indie Stereotypes, but I'm having trouble finding any good music that isn't the same old boring, whispery vocals and jumbled, awkward instrumentals. Where's all the stylized Indie bands, like The Decemberists, and The Flaming Lips, and The New Pornographers, and Sufjan Stevens and such? Somebody suggest some Indie bands that break this dreary, tedious mold.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Haha, you're assuming indie has that much to offer.

Um actually I can't really think of that many bands that fit the stereotype you're talking about, I guess maybe Sonic Youth, maybe some Pavement. Who exactly are you complaining about and I can try to give you artists that aren't like them at all.

Seriouslly though "indie" really doesn't qualify as a genre, but here are some Non-dreary artists

Deerhoof, Architecture in Helsinki, The Go! Team, The Fiery Furnaces, Q and Not U, The Unicorns.

And see...thats pretty much just the top artists on my last.fm account.

Mogwai? ;)

I think you mis understood, I was asking for the ones that weren't mind crushingly blank and monotonous.

bands that I'm complaining about:
Mogwai
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
...I want to say The Arcade Fire, but they occaisianally have a gem or two, if not only one that helps put one to sleep at night...
There's Death Cab for Cutie (who have apparently been abandoned or something), and The Postal Service, but even in their slight dullness and unoriginality, have some personality of their own.

=sets up ye 'ole flame barriers=

really, it doesn''t necesarially have to be Indie, ust anything that is good music that doesn't sound boring.

You're stooopid.

How can you insult all those bands but like Death Cab/Postal - the KING of awful monotonous boring music? You have no taste, my friend.

The Fall, Guided By Voices, The Fiery Furnaces, The Boredoms, The Olivia Tremor Control, Animal Collective. All have oddball sensibilities and make fun, original music.

I don’t usually do this but...OMFG! If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it. I mean, what is it that compels you so drastically to seek out music which, in the past, has proven itself to be less then enjoyable for you to listen to?
That being said – have you heard the Islands album. It’s like “fuck yeah!” It takes some getting used to if you’re a fan of The Unicorns, but it’s worth the effort, fo sho!
That’s my suggestion, The Islands’ “Return to the Sea”.

Because to look very deeply into someting and come out of it knowing that it's not what you want is better than looking at the very first bare minimum layer and deciding then.

Actually, uh, that's indie. That's it. There's nothing exciting, new or original aout it. Except originally there might be a catchy hook or two.

I say: don't be embarassed about it, but embrace pop music. Rachel Stevens and Goldfrapp has so much more to offer than STFUjan stevens.

You need to go into the drug addled, ultra-pretentious world of the avant-garde. Fuck. Yeah.

If you want something that's a little upbeat, try Les Savy Fav, Thunderbirds Are Now!, Gang of Four, Wire, Clor, Brainiac, Polysics, The Mint Chicks...

Gotcha and totally know we're you're coming from. Don't listen to these people saying that represents indie music (but you should definitely check out the artists they're suggesting)...though I don't really know what does because like I said it isn't a genre. In addition to the ones already listed, here are a bunch of energetic fun groups most of whom I've heard called "indie" at one time or another:

At The Drive-In
Braniac (at least their stuff that I've heard)
LCD Soundsystem
Daft Punk
Hot Hot Heat
The New Pornographers
Built to Spill
The Faint
The Apples in Stereo
Le Tigre
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
M.I.A.
You Say Party! We Say Die!
Sleater-Kinney

and I'm sure a ton that I can't think of.

There are also a whole lot of bands that do both low tempo, mellow stuff and more exciting music. Theres also the whole Post-Punk/New Wave revival thing from Britain which is pretty upbeat, though I don't personally find that stuff to be very good. Hope some of this helps.

1. Misunderstood is one word. It's also a Wilco song, so when you're on this board, you should know that, dammit! ;-)

2. Fuck you, I love Mogwai.

It doesn't necesarially have to be Indie, ust anything that is good music that doesn't sound boring.

Some albums for you:

:wumpscut: - Dried Blood of Gomorrha
Anne Clark - Joined Up Writing
Coil - Loves Secret Domain
Current 93 - Cats Drunk on Copper
Current 93 & Nurse With Wound - Bright Yellow Moon
Dead Can Dance - Toward the Within
Diamanda Galas - Plague Mass
Sol Invictus - The Devil's Steed
Ulver - Themes From William Blakes a Marriage of Heaven and Hell

All pretty dark, but not heavy, as I have no idea what you're stance on that is. Still, it's all independent, and all a far cry from the drab crap you've mentioned. Will probably provide good counterpoint to the mainly upbeat suggestions above. If you have any adventureness of taste anyway.

Mr. Putter totally has the right idea. I also second Trout Mask Replica as it's so 'not boring' that it'll melt your neighbours. The following are also good for a similar effect albeit with a lot more melting and less zanyness. See how many dumb metaphors those around you come up with for your stereo being broken.
Big Black
The Butthole Surfers
Can
The Fall
Flipper
Faust
The Jesus Lizard
The Jesus and Mary Chain
Parts and Labor
PIL (esp Metal Box/Second Edition)
Sonic Youth (Pre Daydream Nation only)

If you totally want to overdo things*:
Monoshock
Sightings
Skullflower
Yellow Swans

*Alternately contact mic a broken fridge and rig it to a big amplifier.

Gravy Train!!!

a bit of hip-hop:
Jurassic 5

aw man, all this response is awesome! I'll try and keep up with them all. by the way, I have recently listened to a bit of sleater-kinney (thanks to Diesel Sweeties...).

something strange I've noticed: even though most people only like "Bandages" by Hot Hot Heat, and reguard them as sort of a one hit wonder, I only like "You Owe Me an IOU" by Hot Hot Heat (although Bandages isn't too bad...just 'meh' in my opinion...). anyone else like that song? it is pop-tastic, quality stuff.

so yeah, thanks for all the suggestions so far, and keep 'em coming!
