The Japanese are actually fucking brilliant at black metal. (See Sigh, the Japanese Sabbat and Abigail). Visual Kei can also be pretty damned metal (see X-Japan). The Japanese rule at such things because they can have pictures of themselves posing in shinto shrines with katanas and corpsepaint, and write tracks with titles like 'Hail Yakuza'.

Speaking on such matters and on guilty music, isn't Malice Mizer normally considered a guilty musical pleasure? I picked up a copy of the 'Beast of Blood' single at an anime convention based solely on their utterly RIDICULOUS appearance, and loved the wierd musical combo I found inside.

Japanese music is kind of different. I haven't listened to a lot but a friend of mine is obsessed with Visual Kei stuff.

I think it's a language that can sound utterly evil, but it's rarely used to such an effect in music that I've ever heard. I mean, if there was some band that had a singer that sounded as evil as Iori from the King of Figher games, I'd listen to it.

As for Japanese bands, Sigh are quite good. So are Robin, Spike, Battle of Ninjamanz, and the Starlite Wranglers. Lots of good rock/psychobilly from that little country.

Psh. If you're talking about a lot of what's aired on US television during normal hours, then I suppose so. But Adult Swim has had a lot of excellent shows. Full Metal Alchemist, for one, is great. It's basically a show that poses the question, what really makes us human. Good times. Also, Trigun is an example of the ultimate hero. Someone so bad-assed, he can stop people without having to kill them. I love the show tremendously, it made me cry at one point.

But that's an arguement for another thread.

i own the first bullet for my valentine cd
and the last funeral for a friend album (which, in my defense was a free promo i had to review)
and all the korn albums up to and including untouchables (the first one really ain't that bad!)
and the end of heartache by killswitch engage (i have alive or just breathing too, but its nothing to feel guilty about)

i don't really listen to any of them and they aren't really "my thing", but i still sneak them on every now and again

I'm pretty sure I own a fair amount of Meatlof's discography. In terms of other artists I really should probably chill out on, I have every Frank Zappa cd that isn't just some silly compilation thing his family released post-mortem, and pretty much every singel thing Bill Laswell, Buckethead, and Les Claypool have ever done.

As I said before, I used to be an angsty nu-metal kid, and as such, I also own all KoRn albums save two, one of which is the newest one which I haven't gotten around to yet. But really, in retrospect, I kind of think Untouchables is their best. It has more melody than the others, and I put a lot of value in melody. Also, Hollow Life is probably their most interesting track ever, to me.

Also, I used to be able to do Twist in its entirety. Which freaked people out.

There are a couple of Funeral for a Friend songs I like. They aren't hopelessly bad and I saw them open once. When they forget they're eternally depressed and start shredding the guitar a bit they get better. I like coheed & cambria and alkaline trio but that's all the emo i an really listen to and neither of those two bands make it obvious in their sound. Actually I find Coheed fucking awesome. Lol and then there's Gym Class Heroes. The idea of emo rap just amuses me. I don't listen to their stuff except for Taxi Driver which is hilarious. I think i'm pretty guilty of finding early Ace of Base awesome too.. If its happy and inane I usually like it

ffaf are okay live once they get round to being loud and shouty, but they often seem to be supported by much better bands.
eg million dead, yourcodenameis:milo, gratitude, the haunted, onelinedrawing and so on...

their cover of metallica's damage inc on the other hand is utterly atrocious. they try to update it with an all new "metalcore" style and fail miserably in my opinon.

I have to second Panic! At the Disco. They're so...catchy. Haha. I tend not to share this with many people (though knowing my friends they'd probably either never heard them or P!ATD would be their favorite band. And that's why I can't talk about music with most of them.)

Bluegrass is awesome. Charlie Poole, Grandpa Jones, Bill Monroe, and too many others to mention. Simple, fun music that alternates between bombastic piety and killing people who doublecross you.

Hank and Johnny are great too, and they almost verge into rockabilly, one of the best genres EVER.

But bluegrass was honestly the music I fucking grew up on. From about 8 years old to about 14, that was what I listened to, where other kids had their pop music and whatnot. Imena, my parents would drag me to all these various festivals and whatnot. Great times.

Ska rocks. The ska songs I like are among my favorite of favoritest songs. The problem I think a lot of ska bands have is that they sing about depressing stuff. That'd be like trying to sing about something sad with a banjo, it just doesn't work.

I feel guilty about listening to Dr. Dre's "2001," then later, when driving and bored, I tune the radio to 106.1 MHZ and realize that it's brilliant, sublime sophistry compared to what the kidz listen to these days.

I like listening to the incidental music from System Shock 2.

I thought Seven's Travels was a really fun album.
