Old school hip hop is great.  Like who didn't like snoop dogg in 93'... Nowadays they sing about more relevant things though like bitches cars and how much money they have.

As ashamed of it as I am, there's a fair amount of hip hop that I can totally enjoy. I mean, I already mentioned Tech N9ne, Cypress Hill are a ton of fun. I generally enjoy Dr. Dre. Del The Funky Homosapien and his various projects rock out. Does this make me a bad person?

You just have to remember that Cypress Hill did collaborate with Sonic Youth and use it as an excuse.

Run DMC, Kurtis Blow, and most old school rap from that era work for me. Can someone say Double Dutch Bus? :)

And I still stand by rockabilly as being the most fun genre ever. Sonny Burgess' perpetual happiness makes it so. Serious, "Feelin' Good" is the happiest song ever written.

you make it sound like that's the only modern hip-hop. i love hip-hop, three 6 mafia, lil wyte, lil flip, lil jon, ludacris, there's a lot of great stuff out there, you just have to figure out where to look. You'll find the three biggest "modern hip-hop" scenes are Houston, Memphis, and Atlanta, look into some artists from each area and you'll probably find something you like. I've taken a mean liking to Memphis, whereas my buddy will listen to nothing from outside of Houston. There's really something for everyone though.

edit- dude chronic 2001 was fucking great.

The only remotely hip-hop stuff I listen to now is Skindred, as Rare Form shut down his goddamn homepage, the loser.

Actually, Skindred should DEFINITELY be a guilty pleasure for me...

"Nuff ah dem ah come an dem ah try dog we out,
Born down pill we are the Ruffneck scouts,
Music we make to make the crowd jump up,
Crowd get hyped explode and erupt ah,
Blend up the ragga metal punk hip-hop,
Unity sound killer groove non-stop
In ah fe dis pit only the strong will survive
Strength and power gonna keep them alive

My sound we come to take over,
MC you better look over your shoulder,
Yeah you know we on and on, oh well now.
Skindred we in ah you area,
Bring the raucous you know we superior,
Yeah you know we on and on...
Ah-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na!

Nobody gets out of dis ya pit alive;
Nobody, nobody gets out alive,"

So awesome live. Does anyone know any other band that sounds like them, and isn't lame?

As well as stupidity, when you in all seriousness call a song Stick Wi U or some shite there's gotta be something wrong.
I liked it better when it was Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers who stood for black music culture, nowadays the mainstream is appalling.

Okay, I have heard this one too many times in this thread.

I would like to say, to everyone that has said something along the lines of "there are no guilty musical pleasures", that you best never, ever, ever make fun of something that another person likes.  You cannot ever think a band is too popular for their own good / too popular for the talent they actually have, that there is no such thing as degenerate music, and that there are no social stigmas attatched to listening to a certain form of music or band.

There is too such a thing as a guilty musical pleasure, because people will try and make you feel bad for something that you like.  I really hope what you're trying to say (and everyone else who has said something along those lines) is that you shouldn't let other people's notions of what is worthy to like and what is supposed to be hated should not bother you.  That's a valid point.  Saying that there is no such thing as a guilty musical pleasure, whether a person actually feels guilty or not, is fallacy.

And I am going to edit this into the first post so people who read just that and then make a reply will see this.

Hanson back when everyone thought they were girls.  I have their CDs lying around somewhere.  Sad thing is I know every word on all three CDs.

For my birthday I got their "Tulsa Tokyo and the Middle of Nowhere" VHS (shows you how long ago this was) and I took off around the house screaming.

God, I hate myself sometimes.  =]

You can be into hip-hop and not be into modern hip-hop.  If it ain't Black Star, Ghostface, Common, Roots or Outkast, there is no new hip-hop for me.

Last 2, Currently Playing and Next 2 Hip-Hop tracks:
1. Watch For The Hook - Cool Breeze feat Dungeon Family
2. The Genesis - Nas (damn right I play intros & interludes... calling Pete Rock, you are needed!)
->3. Public Enemy No. 1 - Public Enemy (Not even the likes of Puff Daddy can sour this all-time classic)
4. I Gotcha Back - The Genius/GZA (you are a real Wu-Tang fan if you got this song the first time it was out on the soundtrack for Fresh)
5. Push Up Ya Lighter - The Roots (not hard to call them the best hip-hop band when so very few black people play instruments in the first damn place... which is a damn shame since they invented most modern music.)

Dream Theater is one of my favorite bands and they have been for a long time. But man, I have so much more respect for LaBrie after seeing them live a few weeks ago.

Plus, while LaBrie may get over the top at times, at least he stays in fucking key, which puts him ahead of pretty much every country, punk, all metal subgenres except for power*, and grunge vocalist ever, not to mention plenty of mainstream rock ones.

*and Iron Maiden, but they're godly, so they don't count.

And for metalheads who don't believe male vocalists could sing high, I say to you: Rob fucking Halford.

I think a lot of the reason LaBrie's voice doesn't really bother me is because I got into Judas Priest and Rush and their respective high-pitched vocalists first. Just like how I was able to finally get over my hate for death metal vocals by listening to Testament's The Gathering and loving it.

Exactly, and the thing is, I've talked to numerous metalheads over the intarwebs who go "I don't really like Dream Theater, their singer sounds like a pussy because he sings so high all the time." So I ask, "Well, do you like Judas Priest?"

They naturally respond, "Fuck yeah, Rob Halford is a god!"

Can't think why.  Halford sings at low and normal pitches as well as high, and he's got a good enough voice to pull it off.  I haven't heard Dream Theater <washes hands>, but if the guy always sings shrill it's perfectly fair to call him a nonce and Halford a god.

It's not the pitch or anything of LaBrie's voice that bugs me, it's the voice itself. It just grates on my nerves.

I won't deny that he can get a tad annoying at times on their recordings, but he actually toned it down for the most part when I saw them.

Then again, this might be because of their song choice. Caught in a Web was mildly grating, but the high parts in Fatal Tragedy were significantly more subdued.

His performance on Learning to Live gave me fucking chills, though. The entire band just went all out on that one, it was amazing.

First of all, LaBrie doesn't sing high all the time, and usually when he does it's only for a part of the song. His voice is great when he keeps to the lower registers too (for evidence, I point to his performance on The Human Equation), and I don't know what Halford you're thinking of, but the Halford I know is in shrieking-falsetto mode 90% of the time. I love Judas Priest and all, but Halford's voice grates on me just as much, if not more, than LaBrie's.

My main musical guilty pleasures are:
"Wedding Bell Blues" by The 5th Dimension
"The First Single," by the Format
"Daydream Believer," by The Monkees

That last one kinda deserves a category of its own, because while the song itself is fun, I hate the Monkees and everything they represent.  They were pretty much the first boy band, and set the precedent for such abominations as The Archies, The Backstreet Boys, and the whole slew of corporately-created "artists" who are so popular today.  The thing that really annoys me about the Monkees is that they pretended to be a real band, to the extend of fake-playing their instruments during live shows.  Unfortunately, about 90% of the people I've talked to about music believe that the Monkees were a genuine 60's rock band, while nobody believes that Ashlee Simpson or Usher write their own songs or do their own choreography.
Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir here...
{edit} ....or if I'm being annoying.

Well that and the fact that his vocal chords are still probably a little iffy from when he fucked them up like crazy.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Speaking of high pitched voices, does The Darkness count?  I like 'um.  Total Queen vibe.

Okay, I'm looking at my last.fm and there's a few more I'm feeling guilty about.

First, Cattle Decapitation. Not guilty for liking them, but for liking them so much and so disproportionately. They're a pretty average band, yet they easily come top of my traditional death metal listening by FAR. They must be, what, over 200 places on my overall chart above Carcass and 80-100 above Bloodbath and Grave. It makes my taste in death metal look poopy. Same is the amount of Children of Bodom I've listened to. I know it's because old Children of Bodom will automatically cure me of being glum in any situation, and the same with 3 Inches of Blood, who, by the way I feel guilty for far out-stripping Judas Priest.

I think you misspelt "total Queen ripoff and rapers of Marc Bolan's corpse" there.  The Darkness aren't a guilty pleasure, they're a war crime.
