I realize the discussion has sort of moved on from there, but on the issue of ideology in music and whether to listen to anything Varg is connected with, I'm a Christian and still listen to Emperor, Darkthrone, Watain, Finntroll, Mayhem, 1349, and assorted other bands that are really really anti-Christian.

I've just sort of learned to appreciate the music on its on merits, though I can't say that I'm always completely comfortable listening to Inno a Satana, even though I don't believe Satan exists except as the evil side of human nature.

This separating music from beliefs and actions of its artists goes for countless other musical styles besides "satanic" metal though, I can listen to bebop without feeling like I need to be a heroin addict.

If you like Swans, get yourself some old My Dying Bride.

They are almost like the Swans metal tribute band at times. Especially when you consider stuff like 'Transcending [Into the Exquisite]'.

Have I rhapsodised about Cryptic Wintermoon here yet? Because I'm just listening to 'Thrashomatic Overdrive' right now, and this is seriously some of the best shit ever.

I just picked up Royal Hunt - Paper Blood at the local Borders book store (I have no clue how the hell they got it - but they had it!) and I would recommend it highly to fans of progressive metal. Especially if you like intense keyboard work (well, synths, but it's still awesome).

Yesterday I had this guy ask me if I liked Nordland (Bathory) and because I've only really just been really introduced to heavy metal I kind of stumbled around for an answer while he proceeded to get all elitist on me. He called Dragonforce shitty power metal too. I was thoroughly annoyed by this because I happen to have totally fallen in love with the album of theirs I have (Inhuman Rampage) and it really annoys me when total strangers tell other total strangers that their musical tastes are shit. If I'm in the right mood, Burzum can be fucking creepy. You need to be concentrating on the music though. Preferably in the dark, cliche as it sounds (someone dig up that hilarious Burzum review they used to have at ANUS...).

in the nightside eclipse by emperor is the only black metal album i could ever get into. i've been sure why either, but i do love that album.

mostly my kind of metal is stuff like metallica, sepultura, machine head, corrosion of conformity, down (uk tour yessss!), black sabbath, fear factory, will haven, clutch, crowbar, and kyuss.
i love metal i really do but whenever i say i'm a fan peoples instantly seem to think i'm going to be some knuckle dragging head banging moron. which is a shame because there is some wonderful intelligent beautiful music that these people are going to miss out on by acting so close minded.

Daudi Baldrs is a beautiful album, easily his best work. I like to read the myth while listening to it by candlelight.

That's quite a diverse range of sound, but I'd recommend:

Amon Amarth - Versus the World
At The Gates - The Red in the Sky is Ours
Arch Enemy - Burning Bridges
Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh

Entombed - Left Hand Path
Grave - Into the Grave

With the three bolded particularly recommended. (I take it, next to those, you mean 'Unorthodox' Era EOS.) Try and go for the albums I've suggested, as some of those bands (Mainly Tiamat and Therion) have evolved into stuff completely different. Everyone with a metal bone in their body should get their hands on that Amon Amarth album though, even if only because it has one of those rare fucking PERFECT metal tracks 'Death in Fire'.

I need more Pig Destroyer. Would you recommend Prowler in the Yard or Terrifier? I only have 38 Counts of Battery.

The thing about Thrash is getting the right thrash. Thrash sounds awful when it's done badly, especially as most of the best stuff's from the eighties and the production is naturally weaker. Apart from the standard list of thrash bands that normally gets rolled out, I'd particularly recommend Tankard, Sabbat and Hobb's Angel of Death.

well, ultimately i'd recommend both, Terrifier is an awesome album, and has a very violent air to it (even for pig destroyer!) where as Prowler In The Yard is kind of the definitive Pig Destroyer album, that most fans say is their prime. Terrifier is great, Prowler is great. Start with prowler, then terrifier, if you only want one though.

Also, agreed 115% on Death In Fire being the perfect track.

I'm on a quest to track down the perfect metal tracks, in order to make the most metal mix CD in the Universe, and thus herald Ragnarok. Problem is it's all so bloody subjective. I'm pretty sure 'Death in Fire' is on there though, along with 'For Those Who Died' by Sabbat, 'All Guns Blazing' by Judas Priest and 'Damned in Black' by Immortal should have definite places on there.

I don't listen to much metal, hard rock maybe but not straight metal.
I have actually tried but listening to:
Skyclad - Prince of the Poverty Line
Immortal - Battles of the North
some of The Human Equation
some Iron Maiden greatest hits
God Forbid - Gone Forever
Soulfly - Prophecy just haven't sparked my interest. My little brother, who is a huge screamo/emo/hardcore fan, keeps telling me that the good metal is in reality metalcore. But I really dislike metalcore, especially the variant where it is all shouting and trashing away. I think my main problem with metal is the oft ridiculous feel and inane lyrics, with the exception of Skyclad every metal band I have heard has blah lyrics.

I would like to hear some more Ulver, since their song Christmas is a really good slice of madness. Though I suppose it is not straight heavy metal.
Also I think Khar mentioned Edge of Sanity when he talked about Brudevalsen, whom I like, in the forced listening thread.

It depends what you mean by 'blah' lyrics, there are certainly some metal bands with excellent lyrics. I'd point out My Dying Bride, Agalloch, Acid Bath, Edge of Sanity/Dan Swano, Cruachan and a few others...What is it you object to though? Lyrical prowess or subject matter? If it's the latter there's not much hope for you liking metal lyrically. Even Skyclads approach doesn't stray too far from the metal subject matter approach. Look at how they sing about environmentalism in 'The Disenchanted Forest' or the human condition in 'The Sinful Ensemble'.

Metal is simply about dragons, motorbikes, satan, rage, mighty swords, grief, ice, forests, zombies, elation, trolls, violence, smiting, rampaging, explosions, brotherhood, vampires, hailing shit, serial killers, might, darkness and so on and so forth. It's a complete opposite, as I think Jeph has pointed out in another thread, of hipsters singing witty little numbers about the sex life of a spork. And that's why it is so damn awesome.

It's when they try to sound evil/krieg/whatever and end up sounding ridiculous that I object. I also seem to have a problem with "shoddy" production for most part, I just can't take it, I felt that way about Immortal for example.

I already know with Bloodbath and Amon Amarth, but I will check out those bands, thanks. And I only have one EOS album, The Spectral Sorrows, that I totally love. Next time that I'll be in The Metal Shop I'll pick myself a couple of albums.

Both of those bands are shining examples of the meathead lyricism strain in metal that tends to give the whole genre a bad image. All of Khar's suggestions are great. I would also recommend Enslaved-Isa or Beneath the Lights, Virgin Black, Borknagar, Dark Tranquillity, and Opeth (yeah I know they are an obvious choice) for just a few bands across genres that have good lyrics.

thats half the reason i get annoyed by all these people (mostly on blabbermouth.net) who keep bitching at sepultura for not doing a reunion with max cavalera. have these people actually heard what he's been releasing for the past 7 years?
lyrically, his work has decended into a mire of two line songs and the same old tired "tribe" "what goes around" "eye for an eye" "god the most high" cliches that were simplistic when he first adopted them all that time ago and borderline moronic now.
musically, soulfly have been pretty stagnant too. i'm not saying all there albums sound the same, it's just that they seem to clinging to the nearest trend in metal at the time. for example primitive found itself very much in numetal waters and newie dark days appears to have fully adopted the current metalcore blueprint, in a desperate bit for credability.
it's incredible to think that really max cavalera and soulfly are still trading upon the reputation and popularity of Roots and Chaos AD, whereas sepultura themselves have continued trying to evolve their sound with every album.

they may not be as successful as they once were, not every stylistic change has worked and derrick green might not be to everyone's taste but with this new album Dante XXI they have shown that they are brave and talented enough to make these changes work and they have shown who truly is the superior band artistically.

Arise and Beneath the Remains are pretty much the only really good Sepultura albums. I haven't heard Dante XXI yet, but considering everything after Chaos A.D., I don't have my hopes up.

Having seen both live recently, I'd say Sepultura are much better than Soulfly, though there was this sort of Metal Samba thing Soulfly did that was pretty classy. I don't really listen to either band. I went to the Soulfly concert to see Skindred.

Now, Skindred, that's a good band. About as tr00 metal as the popes left testicle, but great fun.
