Ok, so I have this friend. He's my best friend actual and I've known him for like 10 years. Unfortunately things have come between us: music that is.
Among his favorite bands listed on Facebook: Jack Johnson, OAR, Five for Fighting, Howie Day, Jamiroquai (wtf?), String Cheese Incident, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows, Gavin DeGraw, (non-ironically) Sean Paul, and wait for it...Creed.
Now that makes him seem too far gone but he does like some sorta-ok to good bands: Queen, the Beatles, the Shins, Atmosphere, Springsteen, REM, Hendrix, Kanye West, the Streets etc.
He also has considerable musical talent (much more than I have), at least in terms of instruments (piano, guitar, etc.) So is he beyond hope or can I save his musical soul? He's heard a bit of Deerhoof (my favorite band, but admittedly probably a bad place to start) and said it was "terrible". What sort of bands/records/songs should I try and introduce him to? Any genre is fine but somehow I don't think, say, Cannibal Corpse is the place to start.
ps. please don't start commenting on all of these bands. I realize some people like the bands I spoke poorly of and dislike the ones I mentioned as ok or good. The point is I'm pretty sure no one here likes ALL the bands I listed as bad so everyone can help.
