jcknbl:

--- Quote ---What, just like, list good music?
--- End quote ---

Good music that someone who listens to bad music might be receptable to.

nescience:

--- Quote from: KharBevNor ---But, make him listen to Placebo. It will improve his musical taste or horribly skew his sexuality. Either way, fun.
--- End quote ---

Indeed, Placebo appeals to quite a wide variety of people who have never heard them before.  And yes, it may turn your friend into a Burger Queen.

amok:
I prefer Jamiroquai to all of your "sorta-ok to good" bands except Hendrix *shrug*

If you're intent on converting him to the genres you like, just play him the most popular/widely-regarded-as-good bands in each genre. If he rejects each and every one of them, give up and move onto another genre.

Say... Radiohead, Tool, Porcupine Tree and Anathema for arty/progressive rock. Clutch, Monster Magnet, QOTSA, Sabbath for straight rock 'n' roll. Decemberists, Ted Leo, that fuckin Sufjan Stevens and Neutral Milk Hotel for indie. Etc.

Captain Compromise:
Uhh...try interpol?

Kai:
Or we could totally not try Interpol.

Frank Zappa. Go for it.
