Who wants gmail?
« on: 10 Mar 2006, 17:05 »

I was reading one of the other topics, and to my amazement I discovered that some people here don't have gmail ;)

I've got 98 invites left iirc, so who wants some?

Eh.  I'm tempted to just spawn a whole bunch of the accounts and use them to store files.  Stick that up your ass, Google!

Google has stated that they're fine with this.

Well, let's see... free webmail with tons of space, linked jabber messaging, and ad-free pop access? Sounds good to me...

Well, I dislike the fact that they archive things for you, and target ads based on the content.  Scary.

Oh boo-hoo.  Be more scared that when faced with legal action over the results of their searches (as in the American Blinds case), Google has in the past allegedly "fixed" their searches in the local area of the courtroom and the presiding judge's office to make it temporarily appear as if they have done no wrong.

But hotmails free and it's got 250MB of space. Which I'm thinking is enough for emails. I've got 1456 emails and I'm using less than 10% of the space.

:-) Ahwell, I guess I'll manage without gmail.

You're forgetting one important fact: Hotmail sucks ass.

You're welcome.

The thing I hate about hotmail is the way it nerfs firefox's most useful feature. If I middle click a link it means I want it to open in a new fucking tab. What the hell makes you think stopping this is a good thing?

Also, pop access is very nice and I really like the way it sorts emails into conversations.

Hrm.  My Hotmail has 1GB or so.  And the new Windows Mail interface.  It's okay.  At the end of the day, though, it's not Outlook, so I really don't care for it.

That, and hosting your own mailserver is just better.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I like GMail because I get a quick-contacts list, lots of space, filters & labels, and the spam blocking is just plain spiffy. Also the conversation-view is handy.

I have 100 invites, and I've sent out a total of around ten, I think. I think the number self-increments every so often (per day?), so you'd have to be sending them out pretty consistently to run your number down to zero.

I use my gmail accounts (with many many invites to spare) as back up for my back ups. It's fun, but annoying. I only put the really important sutff on it.
