I'm on the lookout for some rock-ish music that's at least somewhat accessible for me, because I'm currently in a situation where I don't have a lot of time to listen to music and getting into new bands usually takes me some time.
The kind of stuff I'm lookin' for would be like Screaming Trees, The Foo Fighters, Modest Mouse since "Good News", Eels' "Souljacker" album, The Pixies' "Doolittle" or Pavement's "Crooked Rain".
Anyone got some suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I nominate Stavesacre. I'd say try their newest album, "How To Live With A Curse." You may enjoy it; it's rock in the vein of Foo Fighters and the like. Also, if you haven't heard it yet, I recommend the album "Antenna" by Cave In. This is the one that was universally hated by all of the Cave In fans from before, and it sort of tanked commercially, but I am of the opinion that it was just some damn good, and solid, modern rock.

I second Antenna, one of my favourite albums, brilliant stuff, particularly 'Seafrost.'
I also recommend the first Black Rebel Motorcycle Club album, and the Twilight Singers albums Blackberry Belle and in particular Powder Burns. As far as favourite albums, the latter would be in my top ten, and I picked it as the best album released in 2006 at the site I write for.

I was hoping that "Antenna" would be a little more similar to "Jupiter" than what it was, but overall I thought it was a good cd. Never really understood why it got all the hate that it did. It's a better album than Perfect Pitch Black was, anyway...

I've honestly never bought any more Cave In because I like that album so much. 'Seafrost' is like a distillation of my kind of music into nine minutes. Five minutes of restrained, glacial rock, and then four minutes of 'fuck you' feedback noise!

well hate to keep doing this but until someone other than me starts recomending them i'm going to have to go with dallas crane again in particular their self titled effort although it is all good
also alter bridge, audioslave, be your own pet, grinspoon (in particular the early stuff) and then all the classic stuff which someone will undobtably fill you in on

meh, i don't live in america where i've heard that they have innumerable offences in comparison to australia where they don't actually get airtime so they're still half decent...only my opinion of course

i thought he was referring to miles kennedy's speech about how they were going to become the embodiment of corporate rock sellout even more though than nirvana
2 things alterbridge has that creed never did decent solo's, no christian influence

You're absolutely right about both those things, Mark Tremonti actually does know his way around the fretboard pretty well. And wouldja look at that? Scott Stapp nowhere near it. Looks like it might be good...

Okay, another one I thought of...you really should have a copy of "Catch Without Arms" by Dredg...I haven't listened to their older stuff yet, although I've heard it's actually better, but this cd when I heard it last year was one of those "Holy shit this is good!" moments

I saw Dredg live at Taste Of Chaos this year. Their utter disdain for a stadium audience that could care less for their music was impressive, if only because it takes a lot of guts to deliberately antagonize a big audience (though the shift in the tour's tone this year brought out a smaller and shittier crowd, certainly). Their stuff sounded pretty good, to tell the truth.

In particular, absolutely nothing after Easy. NOTHING. They are one of those examples where I actually kind of wish they'd kept doing hard drugs. Nowadays, Phil is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, and even their more rockin' tunes aren't nearly as edgy.

the lovely feathers are absurdly good. tons of energy and great (totally nonsensical) lyrics. they've honestly become one of my favorite bands of late. track down 'hind hind legs' (which should be easy) and the equally good (if not better) ep 'my best friend daniel' (why it's an ep i don't know. it's as long as the lp).

Dredg have been one of my favorites for years. Catch Without Arms was actually quite a disappointment for me, after the Orph EP, and LP's "Leitmotif" and "El Cielo" - they blow CWA away. CWA has its moments though.

It seems like everyone that knew of Dredg prior to CWA thinks that their old stuff was better. I don't know if it's because I didn't get into them until late in the game or what, but CWA really blew my mind when I heard it. Normally, I'm a big fan of under-production on albums, but Catch Without Arms was so damned slick and catchy, plus Gavin's vocals can only be adequately described as "makes you feel as though you are flying" on some of those songs. I like what I've heard of Leitmotif and El Cielo, but I think CWA was actually an improvement.
Now I have to go listen to their older material to verify whether this statement in fact still rings true!

CWA is definitely their most accessible album. Not that that's an issue. I have only listened to it a couple times so there's always the possibility that I would like it more with more listens... even though it's so accessible as I've said... ahem... But yeah, those tracks I recommended! Vital!

Wow, I wouldn't have expected you to recommend something inferior to Queens of the Stone Age. Why didn't you just say Motorhead? That's a much more solid recommendation.

I mean honestly, I know of them obviously, but I can't say I've ever heard a track.
Meanwhile, Orange Goblin kick your ass. They're great guys and 'Magic Carpet' is one of the most perfect rock 'n roll tracks of all time. I wasn't going to recommend Motorhead because it would quite clearly have killed or maimed some of the people in this thread.

Let me explain myself. I don't think Orange Goblin are bad. They're alright. However, you said there was very little rocking on this thread even after I recommended Dinosaur Jr (before you cold diss them, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNceya3MPdU) and Radio Birdman. I did kick myself for not recommending Motorhead, though.
I'm gonna recommend MC5 right about now.

Who cares if Dinosaur Jr played Download? I notice you didn't criticize what they played, though. Hey, you've mentioned that you like Propagandhi. You know they played Warped Tour one year, don't you?

Propaghandi might come in somewhere in a top 500 or possibly top 400 list of bands I like.
I'm not saying that playing Download harms a bands rocking credibility (though that place is the nadir of heavy music in Europe and I could quite happily wipe out 95% of the bands and people there on any given year and not shed a tear). But you don't say 'HEY BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING LOOK HOW HARD ROCKING THEY ARE' and then post a vid from Download. It's just terribly amusing. As for Dinosaur JRs music, that's a better song than I've heard by them before, but I still ain't going to rush out and buy anything.
I watched three Queens of the Stone Age vids. One of them they were cartoon silhouettes being driven round a Rammstein video by the Insane Clown Posse, another coloured lights were being shone on them whilst a chick took her clothes off, another they were live. Each song consisted of one completely limp-wristed Black Sabbath rip-off bass/guitar theme being repeated endlessly with a few blindingly obvious guitar bits or blindingly annoying keyboard segments played over the top, all accompanied by the most ghastly uninspiring nirvana-lite modern rock vocals I've heard since I last turned on the radio. Sounds like the MTV fare I'd always assumed it to be. What Orange Goblin albums are you criticising them off, btw, because if it's Thieving From the House I'll laugh.

What I have heard of Orange Goblin actually sounds a lot like Queens of the Stone Age, at least as far as guitar and drums. The vocals, however, are inferior in my eyes.

Man, I looked up more live vids and I can kind of see where you're coming from, but it's still not a comparison I would have made regularly. I mean, they're both use rock instrumentation, and they both obviously smoke lots of dope and...no I'm done.
Actually, why not just listen to Black Sabbath? Or Acid Bath.

Eh, the weight of the instruments' distortion isn't what makes rock what it is. Just look at Ted Leo. You don't need to have your amp's gain turned all the way up with everything turned up as loud as possible to be a rock band. Give a good rocker any chord progression-- any progression at ALL -- and they will turn it into something worth listening to.
Basically what I'm saying is that rock isn't an amp setting. It's what you're doing on the fretboard with it.

I don't get the "Modest Mouse since 'Good News'" part. That's the last album they released, and even though it's got that hit single we all heard until we puked, I daresay it's not THAT different from their earlier stuff. It's not like the Radiohead leap from Pablo Honey to Kid A or something.

Seriously though, look at the bands he listed. He likes the Foo Fighters and Modest Mouse. He is looking for moderate AOR. Hence the REM suggestion because they were good at the melodic/introspective area of alternative rock. During the 80s they were anyhow. It's a safety recommendation.

try "The Music", their 1st album is incredible, like Kasabian with less synth and more aggression. really gets you going.
