I was just about to post this.
And oh, I AM GOING GUYSES
-
Battles
You might want to stand right in front of the drummer, but you'll risk your ears/mind being blown.
That looks like a pretty damn fun line up.
-
Fucking Big Day Out. Every year I think "its a horrible experience, I'll just go to the sideshows" and there never are any sideshows in Brisbane because the BDO promoters are soulless arseholes.
The thing is, there are some bands I would definately like to see there, but I dont think I want to see them at the big day out.
-
um...i could've sworn the bands organiszed the side shows themselves, i wanna go to the arcade fire one not sure about any thing else i'm already seeing iron maiden in the same week as bdo already
-
FUCK THIS IS THE GREATEST WEEK FOR NEWS- Radiohead and now this. I'm not sure they could get a better line up if they tried, i'm goin, i hate BDO but i'd be crazy to miss all these guys. Has Arcade Fire announced a sideshow in melbourne yet?
-
The promotors of the Big Day Out typically make the headliners sign a clause saying they won't play a sideshow in Brisbane, as a result of the Gold Coast BDO never selling out. On the upside, the Arcade Fire are the only headliner band there that I'm particularly keen on, so I might still get a few shows out of this.
-
The thing is, there are some bands I would definately like to see there, but I dont think I want to see them at the big day out.
This is kinda how I feel too. I'd love to see the Arcade Fire, but out in a field in the afternoon sun? I don't think it would be quite right. Still, there're enough interesting artists (the three Bs: Bjork! Billy Bragg! Battles!) in the first announcement to make me go hmm.
(As in, consider going).
-
Why do they still try to market this shit? Theres only one decent bandm and considering how old they are I'm not sure rage would even be a good show.
-
If your goin to be such a naysayer can you please not post in the first place, evidently there are a fair few people who are excited so i don't see any justification for making pointless comments about how shit the bands are.
-
This isn't meant to be an insult, but I am so glad I don't live in Australia.
-

John Stanier. Looks like a Marine, plays like a Marine.
Ridiculous drummer, especially when he was in Helmet. On 'In the Meantime' he sounds like he is hitting drums with other bigger drums.
What the hell is with that one cymbal.
-
Damn RATM and Aracde Fire, damn you Australia with your far away-ness.
-
John Stanier. Looks like a Marine, plays like a Marine.
At Green Man he took his shirt off after the first song and was literally steaming for the rest of the show. There was a barrier between the stage and the crowd so I didn't get sweat flung onto me.
-
Fucking Big Day Out. Every year I think "its a horrible experience, I'll just go to the sideshows" and there never are any sideshows in Perth because the BDO promoters are soulless arseholes.
The thing is, there are some bands I would definately like to see there, but I dont think I want to see them at the big day out.
That pretty much sums up my thoughts. I would love to see Bjork, I would love to see Battles, I would love to see the Arcade Fire and I would love to see Paul Kelly; just not at the BDO.
I can't really be bothered with festivals and I especially can't be bothered with the crowd that the big day out draws.
-
What the hell is with that one cymbal.
To quote a Youtube comment on Battles that I read, "he's a beast."
-
Being from New Zealand, where we get next to no good bands ever coming here I am definitely going to BDO. This may be my only chance to see The Arcade Fire live.
-
This isn't meant to be an insult, but I am so glad I don't live in Australia.
Yeah, well I bet you would considering you're a leisurely train ride away from Wacken. I think European and American people need to understand that the occasional decent Splendour in the Grass/Falls Festival lineups aside, this is pretty much the best lineup any festival in Australia is ever going to get.
How depressing.
-

My point exactly.
-
Why do they still try to market this shit? Theres only one decent bandm and considering how old they are I'm not sure rage would even be a good show.
If you think RATM are the only decent band in that lineup you are retarded.
Also, go see Slayer, Sonic Youth, Wilco, the Wrens, or even fucking Radiohead and tell me "old" people can't play good shows.
Back on topic: the must-sees for me would be LCD and Battles. Arcade Fire and Bjork would be fun but not required. TOO BAD I HATE FESTIVAL SHOWS AND DON'T LIVE IN AUSTRALIA EH
-
I wonder how quickly it will sell out? In Perth, apparently the RATM side show sold in under a minute! There will probably be a lot of people buying BDO tickets just to see them. This city has a disproportionately large population of metalheads. (Hope I don't start an argument about whether Rage are metal or not...)

RATM is the onyl good band, all other claims are false logic. The rest aren't worth anyone seeing, let alone this type of publicity.
I never said RATM couldn't bring it due to theuir age, my concern is their break up has been for 8 or so years now, and I haven;'t heard "IMG RATM CAN STILL BRING IT" yet, no gaurentee they can.
Your list of old bands that 'can' perform is also chocking, slayer is terrible live, sonic youth and radioheads shows blow so much ass they are probably illegal in several small countries. The other two I'm not familiar with.
CONCLUSION - It is not worth is money, sun burn or bad music to go see RATM, I'll wait till they tour a venue worth seeing, Festival hall does not fit this decription.
-
God why can't you spell or participate in a fucking conversation
-
You know, the crowd will be pretty bad. Half idiot kids in Che shirts, half indie fags. I don't know if seeing Arcade Fire (which are good but not *that* good) is worth sitting in the sun all day listening to bad bands and getting annoyed by said Che Shirt kids/indie fags. Hmmm.
-
Honestly, the typical BDO punters piss me off more than those two cliques. At least I can assume those two groups are there for the music, for a given definition of "for the music", but every fucking year there are always a huge crowd of dickheads who push people around in the moshpits, get drunk as hell, and just generally cause trouble for the people who just want to enjoy some bands. I really am anticipating trouble because in my experience, most of these "typical punters" are also massive RATM fans and basically that is going to be a crowd with some problems because it will be the highest density of arseholes in this country since the last One Nation party meeting.
-
indie fags
Does anyone else automatically assume people who say things like this are wastes of breath? I know I do.
I am also rather disappointed nobody has been discussing the presence at this festival of Billy Bragg and Dizzee Rascal. They're blatantly the best things on that line-up, although apparently Battles are insanely good live. I just wish their gigs didn't always sell out in about a minute round here.
-
I'm going. Mainly to see Bjork, as Bjork's only other show in Sydney is limited to 5000 capacity. Also, Billy Bragg (anyone know which band he's likely to play with these days?) and Dizzzeeee Rascal as above. Also, I used to be in a RATM covers band when I was 16, so I might wallow in some nostalgia. A dank pit of warm, moist, angry nostalgia...
Seriously, this is an unusually good line up for Australia.

That's probably true. I've only ever been to one Big Day Out, though, and I did nothing but get really close to the stage and stay there for Metallica (I was a really, really huge fanboy back then.).
Here's an odd question- what do you do at an Arcade Fire concert? You can't really mosh, but standing still doesn't seem right either, but it's kind of hard to imagine everyone breaking out in dancing, as it'll probably be packed too tight for that.
Does anyone else automatically assume people who say things like this are wastes of breath? I know I do.
a pack of wolves = indie fag. :police:
-

It's probably because you're an indie fag.
-

My guess? Everyone cries and hugs each other.
-
You also get a few really annoying people who need to shove in front of you because Arcade Fire understands them. You break those people.
-
My housemate and I are planning on going. Although I don't really like festivals all that much, there are enough good bands in the line-up to tempt me. That and I've been hanging out for far too long now for the Arcade Fire to come to Australia. I'm not put off by the presence of Rage Against the Machine fans: as I have no interest whatsoever in seeing Rage Against the Machine, I'll be hanging out at the other stages catching the likes of Billy Bragg (haven't seen Braggy in years, and never at a festival). In fact, if Rage are the headline act, I'll probably leave before their set starts.
I'm a little miffed that for the past two years the Melbourne B.D.O. has been shit, but only ten minutes walk from my house, but now it's got the best line-up they've had in yonks, and it's stuck out at bloody Flemington.
-

Well said, and good point!
-
Are people who are past puberty allowed to like Rage Against the Machine?
Is this a biological possibility?
-
Yes.
Are people so conceited capable of logic?
-
RATM haters make valid points in this thread. I never really thought about it before. Here's some maths to prove RATM is pretty crap:
RATM= rap metal with a really annoying frontman and a somewhat unconventional guitarist, with activist themes.
Limp Bizkit= rap metal with a really annoying frontman and a somewhat unconventional guitarist.
Limp Bizkit= suck.
Activist Themes= Suck.
Therefore, RATM= Limp Bizkit x Activist Lyrics.
So, RATM= Suck2
It's maths! You can't disprove this kind of stuff.
-

Well it's an odd situation. When I saw them at the Tower Theater in Philly, the seated show quickly became a standing show and what followed was kinda-sorta-semi moshing with a lot of people jumping up and down and screaming the lyrics slightly out of sync and terribly out of tune.
-
There's also a bit of watching in awe while some of them climb parts of the stage, use each other's helmeted heads as drums, shout wildly, intermingle with the crowd, play a large variety of instruments, etc. There's so much to watch that I haven't really felt a huge urge to do much else either time I've seen them.
-

I'm almost wondering if you are talking about entirely different bands and an entirely different festival lineup here. In fact, I think you have to be.
-
I'm not sure he's really speaking english.
-
Well, he misspelled "jhocking" but I'm willing to let that one slide.
-
This is kinda how I feel too. I'd love to see the Arcade Fire, but out in a field in the afternoon sun? I don't think it would be quite right.
I saw them at Austin City Limits Festival a couple years ago. The sun was directly behind the stage, it was ~4pm, so I was staring into the sun the whole time, and it was 108(42 C) degrees! Somehow, it worked, despite the ridiculous heat, copious amounts of sweat, and inability to keep sunblock on my skin thanks to the heat and sweat. Looking back, I wouldn't go through that experience again. The Arcade Fire is good, but not *that* good.
-
OH MY GOD STOP HAVING OPINIONS
-
EVERY TIME YOU HAVE AN OPINION GOD KILLS A PERSON FOR THEIR OPINIONS
-
The lineup doesn't look bad but I really hate the kind of people who go to BDO. I haven't been since 1999 and haven't really seen the need to since. I just can't justify paying $120+ to see only a couple of bands. I would really only want to see RATM and I need to really like at least 4 bands to pay that much money.
-
it was 108(42 C) degrees!
despite the ridiculous heat
Punters at the Gold Coast Big Day Out consider a 42 degree day to be a pleasantly mild day for a festival.
I'm just trying to construct a mental image of how fucking horrible this festival is.

Nope, I know the bands, I know the festival grounds. I know what I want to see and this isn't it. I know whats good, and this certainly isn't it. Rage aren't even that much of an attraction anyway - theres NO reason to brave the kind of sunburn conditions and no doubt annoying bogans populating this 'music' festival.
Drunk bogans, combined with drunk annoying activists, plus a lot of 100 degree weather, plus NO actual music to go see well there really isn't any reason anyone should be contemplating going. It's my duty as the moral upright citizen I am to try and stop as many QC fans as I can.
-
Please don't.
-
plus a lot of 100 degree weather
Are you even Australian?

No, you're thinking of the Burning Man festival.
...
I'm so sorry. I'm a bad person.

This is very true. They're a really great band to watch (a bit like Man Man although easier to really watch b/c the audience at Man Man shows is always insane) with an amazing amount of stage presence and tons of energy. They do a lot of really cool stuff, playing on all sorts of things, switching instruments mid-song and generally cavorting about in a way that is immensely entertaining. Personally I think they're wonderful live and not to be missed despite the mildly annoying nature of the crowds they tend to attract.
-
plus a lot of 100 degree weather
Are you even Australian?
Yes, but since I was addressing a forumite from North America somewhere I chose to use imperial measure. Far be it from me to rpedict Melbourne's weather, but I don't doubt theres a strong possibility of the temperatures reaching the mid 30's quite easily.
-
Nope, I know the bands, I know the festival grounds. I know what I want to see and this isn't it. I know whats good, and this certainly isn't it.
Really? You've heard of Billy Bragg, but not Wilco? You've heard of Grinspoon, but not The Wrens?
I'm not even going to touch the notion that LCD Soundsystem are "certainly" not good, mostly on the basis that they released "All My Friends" and almost any other band you can care to name has not.
-

See I'd cite that as a reason why they aren't as good as 'any band I'd care to mention', and another reason why my musical knowledge dominates yours. But since I have no problem with you, I'll leave you to it.
-

No, you're thinking of the Burning Man festival.

I'm so sorry. I'm a bad person.
It's not like that doesn't happen at Burning Man at least once a year. My friend set his face on fire this past Burn, and I'm sure he wasn't the worst off for the whole week.
-

Matt, you're such a liar, you've heard of LCD Soundsystem, yeh? Checked them out. Truth is, I know you and i know you're to snobby and prejudiced to even give them a chance.
-
Alex - please refrain from your hypocritical prejudice of my musical collection, it is completely unwarranted and, unfounded!
-
another reason why my musical knowledge dominates yours.
Aaaaand that's a ban for being a hipster snob AS SPECIFICALLY PROHIBITED IN THE FUCKING THREAD DESCRIPTION
-
i specified that???
-
It's in the forum section subtitle.
(also, yay)
-
I declare today a minor QC holiday.
Go on, have a few posts off and relax.
-
wow, finally free of the oppression, this is a great day.
-
A permanent ban?!?
-
I like how it took him about 2 days after the first ban to get banned again. Good work, buddy.
-
Anyway. Back on topic. Sydney BDO tickets sold out in 20 minutes, apparently. If I can't get tickets in the online ballot, I'll be legging it over the fence, like some kind of drunken, Bjork-loving ninja.
-

Awgh, what! I'm hoping Perth tickets don't go that fast...
-
A friend of one of my cousins managed to get in one year by running through the kitchens of one of the restaraunts thereabouts holding a guitar and yelling "SHIT SHIT I'M IN ONE OF THE BANDS! GET OUT OF MY FUCKING WAY I'M LATE OH SHIT!!!
Maybe consider that method of entry.
-
Yeah, I've been thinking about it.
Plan A:
Wait until there's a critical mass of fence jumpers, and storm the fence en masse. This worked one year.
Plan B:
A friend of mine has a truck, and regularly does staging for festivals (not BDO, though). We're thinking about loading up the back with people and trying to get in through a loading bay.
Plan C:
Rumour has it there's a fabled sewer tunnel that leads into the Stadium. By dressing up as a woman, I'll seduce the Minister for Waste Desposal using my Feminine Wiles and slip Rohypnol into his appletini. While he's dreaming sweet dreams of cross-dressers in full-body sewerage worker rubber dry-suits, I'll then steal his keys, and obtain the blueprints for the Homebush Bay sewage network. Then, riding an inflatable pool toy, I'll float gently down the stream of human waste and emerge victorious from a grate. Despite the fact that I'll be encrusted with human waste and clutching a pool toy in the shape of a banana, given the average BDO punter, I'll fit right in, seamlessly blending in with the crowd.
-
I was up at midnight for the release. Server crashed. Kept trying. At 1:30 I gave up and went to bed, got up at 3am to try again. 3:30 I went to bed, got up at 6am to try again. Went back to bed and tried again at 7, then 7:30, then 8, then at about quarter to 9 when I got into work the website said they'd sold out of BDO.com tickets.
I was logged in to ticketek at 9am waiting for them to start selling. As soon as they were made available I hit search. 15 mins later they told me there were no tickets found.
I logged out of ticketmaster and into ebay.com.au to see BDO tickets already being put up for sale.
Fucking cunts.
-
Gold Coast BDO has also sold out in record time.
Things are looking shaky for the rest of us...
-
Right, according to the BDO website, you can register for the online ticket ballot from 9am EST Thursday 18th October.
-
Popped down to my local record store at 9 this morning, queued for about 20 minutes, bought 2 tickets for the Melbourne show. No sweat. Sorry, guys!
-
RATM?
I shall swim to Austrailia.
-

missing link is awesome isn;t it
-
It seems that Perth tickets are selling slowly, too. I managed to get two this morning without any trouble.
Sorry to all you Sydneysiders/Gold Coasters. :(
-
missing link is awesome isn;t it
Polyester's better!
-
I love polyester. I'm so fucking pissed off with myself though, cos i totally forgot about it and by the time i'd rushed to Greville Records that night the last ticket was just being sold. FUCK. So it looks like i'm going to sideshows- if they announce them.
-
I was just talking to the guy in Polyester about half an hour ago. They've still got about 40 tickets left. RUN!
-
oh man, thankyou so much. I only got that post today, ran out and bought 4 of the last 10 tickets. I am very happy now.
-
You're welcome!
-
ok so here I am thinking that gold coast never sells out so it will be ok to wakeup on the morning the tickets went on sale and purchase at ease.... WRONG!! The online tickets sold out in 15 minutes :( thankfully though my best mate rang me from the huge line that stretched around the block waiting to get into Rockinghorse where they had tickets on sale ..... and being the angel that she is she waited 2 hours to get one for me (she even sent me a picture message to prove that she had them) So YAY I am going to Big Day Out
Also what is with all the Big Day Out haters? my best friend and i have a tradition of going every year and we always have loads of fun. You can make cliches about all the kind of people who go but at the end of the day everyone is there to enjoy the music and half the fun of big day out is seeing bands you wouldn't usually see or have even heard of and end up loving them .... My best friend and I always find that each year eclipses the last and we don't even drink or dabble on substances and yet it is still the one day of the year that we both look forward to in anticipation. Sure not everyone is there to see the same kind of music but at the end of the day it is all about the music so lighten up guys and just enjoy it for what it is
-
and we don't even drink or dabble on substances and yet it is still the one day of the year that we both look forward to in anticipation.
Well that can kind of be part of the problem - a large number of people do, and proceed to make things less fun for the rest of us.
-
thankfully though my best mate rang me from the huge line that stretched around the block waiting to get into Rockinghorse where they had tickets on sale .....
so her being your best friedn is this a new status?
-
LOL no not quite weve been best mates since we were in primary school and she is my traditional BDO escort
-
Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Cut Off Your Hands and Sarah Blasko. I wanna go this year. I really really like LCD Soundsystem and I <3 the Arcade Fire. Truth be told I don't actually know any 15 yo Australians who like those two bands can someone prove to me that i'm not the only one here.
-
I mean other 15yo Australians.
-
from the huge line that stretched around the block waiting to get into Rockinghorse where they had tickets on sale .....
Have you seen the signs on every counter saying "We don't have any big day out tickets and we don't know anyone that does" ?
I am basically a huge jerk and ask them if they have any Big Day Out tickets every time I'm in there because none of the clerks ever want to talk about Spacemen 3 with me.
-
I got Bjork tickets! I no longer care for BDO. I might still try and jump the fence just for fun, though.
-
Hey do u know if Arcade Fire have announced a side show yet?
-
2nd update for big day out the really important part is that die! die! die! are playing
New additions to BIG DAY OUT 2008: silverchair, Spoon, Augie March, Brand New, Regurgitator, Anti-Flag, Karnivool, Carl Cox, Pnau, Kate Nash, Josh Pyke, beXta, Shy Child, Gyroscope, Enter Shikari, Operator Please, Unkle (live), Goodwill, Krafty Kuts & MC Dynamite, Die! Die! Die!, The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello acoustic),Blue King Brown, Dr Octagon with Kutmaster Kurt, British India, Aceyalone, Krill
-
Yeah I'm not going.
-
There is not one single band in that lineup that excites me much.
I love Karnivool but I could see them basically five times a year if I wanted to
Enter Shikari might be good fun live
I suppose I should see Spoon for the indie cred.
I've already got my tickets and I was stoked with the first announcement, but I'm wondering how I'm gonna fill the whole day (oh god if any of the bands I wanna see clash on the timetable I'm gonna pop some caps in some asses swear to God)
-
This isn't meant to be an insult, but I am so glad I don't live in Australia.
the occasional decent Splendour in the Grass/Falls Festival lineups aside, this is pretty much the best lineup any festival in Australia is ever going to get.
How depressing.
i don't know if i'm alone in this train of thought, but i was under the impression that australia is actually a pretty great place. we get heaps more great bands than lots of places i can think of, and alot of the international musos i've spoken to really enjoy the place! not to get too patriotic about it, but aus is actually cultivating some wicked music of its own. the cultural cringe strikes again.
i'm helping out with sound at 2008 bdo, and have been a punter a few times before...however many negative aspects of the festival there are, like bogans with watermelon helmets (man they stink in 42 degree weather), ladies with police uniforms and/or angel wings, metallica fuckwits grabbing the butt of a 15 year old (me), they do provide an all ages place for people to see world class bands where they otherwise may not have been able to. i saw john cooper clarke at last year's and he was great, i didn't even know he was booked to perform. and at the end of the day it'll set you back a little over $100. for some people that's so more than worth it!
-
And passing out because you've stubbornly been waiting in the moshpit to see your favourite band play for the last three hours is pretty much a rite of passage for Australian teens.
-
I still fail to understand why a moshpit is so great.
-
I am very excited for Arcade Fire, Spoon and Bjork.
Thing with the big day out is you know it'll be stupidly hot and you'll get a terrible sunburn and bruised toenails, but you still have to go.
Also, hey CamusCanDo! You are from NZ, and so am I! This makes us both pretty cool. And Violentdove, you would pretty much be my hero if you could pull off plan C.

I still fail to understand why a moshpit is so great.
Do you exercise? It's the same feeling.

I don't think it's really about whether moshpits are fun or not. They just sort of seem to form at large outdoor venues, they're unavoidable. Personally, I think they form as a way of avoiding eye contact with the people crammed in on all sides around you, because that shit can be awkward.

ergo b bag. hehe. playing at the lilyworld. its pretty stupid really, its a 14 piece band and we all wear matching spandex jumpsuits and play songs about getting wasted, partying in space (and in the jungle) and stalkers. its hard to do it justice with mere words, you'd have to check out the myspace myspace.com/ebbag (http://myspace.com/ebbag). still, free backstage times!
