It's that time of year again, folks. Spring break is just around the corner for those of us that are in school or molding young minds, a.k.a. teaching, Mr. Hocking.
Who's going on a trip? Where are you going? Post it here and perhaps you will discover that some forumite resides in that very place and you can meet and have epic make-outs hang-outs and good times. Or maybe someone else has been there before and they can give you travel tips and recommendations for restaurants, museums, and other fun things to do.

I actually have no idea when my spring break is. But that would be the most likely time that I could make it to New York for one reason or another, either that or a long weekend coming up since I am NOT gonna try and visit again on a normal weekend, because the bus trip up there is not worth it without a strong drink awaiting me at the other end.
But anyway any of these so called plans of mine can be referred to the Pre-Tronnocon: NY thread.

Same here. I will be spending most of mine in New York. The week before that, as I doubt I'll have more than one exame actually during exam week, I'll be hanging out with the people who are home for their spring break, as mine usually falls a week after everyone else's.

I might go to Phoenix with my friend Clay. Usually our spring break coincides with SXSW, but not this year- probably because this is the first year I've been 21 and everything conspires against me.

My "spring break" aka reading week starts this upcoming Monday. I am heading to Montreal to hang with some good friends of mine and ruin my brain. If any MTL peoples see this, send me a pm and we can chill. However, I must warn you I am planning for this to be the most debaucherous week of my life.

I would post a picture of me, topless, but I think the novelty has kind of worn off, and I just got two facebook warnings (for posting a picture where everything was covered in a group about voting naked for the student elections!) so my spirit is a little crushed regarding exhibitionism.
My spirit is also a little crushed regarding everything anyways, but that's probably because I'm giving up coffee, that foul temptress.
Anyways, I'll be heading up North with a friend to his family's cottage, where we will hang out, make music, hopefully go cross-country skiing, maybe build a snow fort or something, and maybe even finish the first hull of his catamaran.

My break is sometime in mid-march. I don't really have anything planned, and I don't know if I'm going to go back home or spend it here. The problem is, the town my school's in is really boring over breaks when no students are around, and going home would be equally as boring because none of my friends are going to be in town, due to vacations and study abroad and such.
I might go visit my brother at his school for some of the time, but he'd still be going to class and such so I'd have large parts of the day where I'd have to occupy myself, which I suppose is doable. If I end up just staying here I'll probably just play video games and watch movies. I should really use it to start working on some of the big term papers I have but I know that's not likely to happen.

I think my break is like, the third week of March or somewhere about there. I have no idea what I'm doing. Most likely nothing. Sitting on my ass. I wish I was doing something cool like going to New York to see some shows, but I don't think that's going to happen unless plane tickets, hotel accommodations, and show tickets mysteriously fall on me from above. Wouldn't that be nice.

Thing is, I teach at multiple schools and their spring breaks are all different, so there's no single week I have off, just one fewer class to teach on those weeks. Besides, knowing myself I'll forget it's spring break and show up to teach anyway.

yeah it is actually really ridiculous. cfru sends me e-mails every week that include shows coming to guelph in the upcoming few months so programmers can mention them or play those bands or whatever if they'd like, and between february 14th and 24th there's just this massive gap. it is so depressing.
i'm thinking more and more as work piles up that i'm just going to make tronnocon my big yearly holiday/spring (summer?) break/drunken irresponsibility whatever holiday and get it all out in one go. i want to say this will be fun for everyone but actually i'm not really sure. it might be terrifying.

Mine technically starts on March 3rd, as that's the first day there is no class (Monday), but I leave for my trip on Friday the 29th.

Most of the ones I have applied for are lab assistants, retail (everything from JoAnn ETC, where I worked before, to Hot Topic and Macy's and JC Penny), stocking and restocking (also retail), cashiers, grocery baggers, office assistants, personal assistants, Star Bucks, Border's, Barnes & Noble, and tech support. I can't get manager positions or anything above entry-level because of lack of experience, and I do not have a degree for anything more "professional". I'm almost desperate enough to go back to summer camp jobs. Pretty much the only place left for me to apply is like McDonald's.
I am mostly blaming the area, because it is a college town and so everyone already has student employees.

That's only because pretty much everything in this area looks exactly the same.
Plus I just watched it again and saw nothing familiar at all. The only thing I noticed were the absolutely horrid accents that some of them had. It was painful.

also, if you going to have time in the morning to eat, go to the ruta maya (http://rutamayariverwalk.com/) location they just opened in san antonio. it's a close walk from the hotel, inexpensive ($3-5 for a large muffin+coffee) , and hells of delicious.
I think we should have the time. We'll be in San Antonio from Wednesday afternoon until Friday morning, so if we can't get there for breakfast we'll definately be able to go at some point.
So if you know of any other good restaurants or cool places to visit, I am taking suggestions.

Also, I forgot to mention that for the first half of spring break, I will be ushering my friend (whom I will hereafter refer to as "perfect friend") around London because she booked a ticket last year and invited herself as soon as she heard I was accepted to a school here.
Anybody got any ideas? So far I've got "go to Hyde Park/introduce her to Sexy Professor/ice skating at The Museum of Natural History/take her to the London Eye and push her out because she is so frucking perfect all the time."
It just feels like something is missing, y'know?
After my parents pick me up, she is going to stay with her burly boyfriend who looks a little like fred durst not sayin, just sayin in Grosvenor, where she will presumably stay inside for the rest of her stay.

This is my first, and last spring break (since I'm only studying in America for one year) and I am very excited about it!!
We were going to go to Acapulco, but now me and a few friends are going skiing for the first half of the week in West Virigina, then we're going to a cheerleading competition in South Carolina because my friend's team from Australia are coming to compete. Woo! We're going to cheer cheerleaders!! I know skiing isn't the usual thing to do for spring break, no sun sea sand, etc, but it'll be good (I hope) as long as I don't break anything...

The proper way to get off a ski lift is to raise the tips of your skis as you get near the landing point, and when they hit the ground simply stand up and let the chair push you forward.

Thanks, I'll try to remember that, getting off ski lifts and avoiding trees. Check. I've been told that the key if you've never done it before is to look as though you've never done it before so that people will avoid you. So I'm planning on lots of padding, a helmet and a sign on my back that says 'Steer Clear!!'

Currently in Fargo it is -11 with a -38 windchill.
Texas is currently hovering around 70.

This was on a T-hook, and I've only encountered them once. I pray I never will again, but a lot of ski slopes consider them unsafe and easy to fall off, so they're barely in use any more.
All ski fields I've ever been to in New South Wales have T-hooks and noticable lack of actual seaty things. They are pretty terrifying.

When I was in the Middle East I didn't see any indoor ski places, but I did go sledging down sand dunes in the desert. Ah, happy days...
My spring break is in about 3 weeks I think. I hope it's cold enough for snow... but then I'm going the beach so I'm undecided! I think hot would be better, then I can still enjoy the pretty mountains, and to tell the truth now I think about it more (and hear the horror of T-hook lifts) sitting and looking might be more fun!!!

Seven Springs in southern Pennsylvania has one on their Learn-to-Ski place.
It's pretty terrifying, the second or third time I went up it I fell, but there was no way I was letting go. Got dragged up about three quarters of that bitch 'til I fell off completely.

No the worst part was that smartass eight year old who actually stopped going down the hill and started following me back up so he could point and laugh.

I've never seen a t-hook, I don't think, but the worst lift I've been up was a button lift that must have been half a kilometre long up a horribly steep slope (scariest slope ever, it went straight down and you could only see 20-40 metres in front of you before it dipped below your sight and revealed the valley a couple of kilometers below). I didn't realise the lift ended because there were no signs or anything, so I accidentally flew into some roped off area where the lift turned around.

I've been in some that bounce and sway too much for comfort, which is especially horrible if you're above some rocks on a steep slope.

The last time I went skiing I separated my left knee. I was not concerned with the ski lifts.

As a native san antonian, definitely check out the Witte. Walking around downtown is fun too, if your into the city thing. Market Square is a pretty cool place on the west side of downtown, you should check it out.

Liberty Bar, 328 E Josephine St, San Antonio, TX; great european food with with a texas twist thrown in, and a dining room that will give you vertigo. DEFINITELY GO HERE.
Mi Tierra, 218 Produce Row, San Antonio, TX; cool mexican place in market square, great atmosphere, great food if a bit overpriced
Blanco Cafe, 419 N Saint Marys St, San Antonio, TX; straightforward and delicious mexican food
Sushi Zushi, 203 S Saint Marys, San Antonio, TX; bastardized sushi, quite delicious
The area i frequent is about 5-10 minutes north of downtown:
Timos, 2021 San Pedro Ave, San Antonio, TX; cool little soup/sandwich/coffee shop. Great people working there, and i will be one of them come summertime.
Main Street Pizza, 1906 N Main Ave, San Antonio, TX; delicious pizza, great spot for lunch. I eat there atleast 3 out of 5 days a week.
Candlelight Coffeehouse and Winebar, 3011 N. St Mary's, San Antonio, Tx; cool 'swanky' coffee place with decent food. Very comfortable, my place of employment up until last friday.
Mon Thai, 4901 Broadway, San Antonio, TX; great sushi, ask for the back room with the glass ceiling. Not far from the Witte
Cappyccinos, 5003 Broadway St, San Antonio, TX; cool bar with good food, best hamburger ive found. Not far from the Witte, either
Paloma Blanca, 5800 Broadway St # 300, San Antonio, TX; great spanish food.
Oo, and if you didnt know already, that bodies exhibit is at the Witte.

I'm pretty sure I felt nothing but disgust with San Antonio (with the exception of the Market Square, which was just OK) when I visited. Damn, but I hated the Alamo. Walk right on by.
Of course, if there is a chance to see the bodies exhibit go see that.

I'm pretty sure the Alamo is one of our scheduled stops, so I will definately be seeing it.
The Bodies exhibit may or may not happen since the Witte isn't really within walking distance of our hotel. Market Square is kind of in the same position. Depending on how many people want to go, we could take a cab, but I'll have to see how it works out.

dang there is this awesome taco place i went to that i can't remember the name of! it's near the historic residential district i think, southwest (maybe) of downtown? one of the homes in the neighborhood got a new coat of paint from an author that owned it (painted it purple, i believe) and there was an uproar.

Dunno, Sam, the only taco place i go to is a taco cart by my house or Taco Taco by my school, which is right next to the historical district, but on the north side of downtown.
And Misconception, good luck finding much to do within walking distance, San Antonio is the definition of urban sprawl.

I was just down in San Atonio a few weeks ago with my school's choir. Nothing too amazing really. It was nice to be in that kind of climate though--Wisconsin's at about 20 degrees now, and this is considered a heatwave after the last few weeks.
It's snowing again today.

Also, if you take pictures in the red light district, the large imposing guys who make sure that everyone is playing nice will borrow your camera and ensure that it is waterproof.

So I leave tomorrow at noon for spring break! I am bringing my laptop with because I need to prepare for an essay test the week I get back, so I will try to pop in when I am bored and can access some wireless internet. If this does not happen I will miss you all a lot! Or at least some of you a little, I'm not sure.

Also today on the way from Madison to Indianapolis we made a stop that I did not know about. I spent two hours wandering around downtown Chicago in the cold weather! I was pretty fun aside from the fact that I did not bring a warm enough coat.

Anyway, it looks like I might be headed to North Carolina for spring break. Not really an ideal spring break location but..better than southern Wisconsin, that's for sure.

I don't get a spring break this year. I finish my last class the week before spring break, and then instead of taking spring break, I have to go to an externship and work 60+ hours a week for three months at slightly more than minimum wage. The upshot to all this is that when my externship is over in July/August, the $8000 or so in stipend money that my is refusing to give me now comes to me lump sum. I will definitely use said money for a vacation. Thailand or Malta if I can beat monsoon season, France and Italy if I can't.

Again- yeah, but recently? Seems as though it's died down quite a lot since the mid-80's/early 90's. Austin has the most live music venues per capita in the US, and it has a crap ton of music festivals, as well as a lot of really great new bands. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Bay area has a bad scene, or whatever, but it can't really compare to Austin- at least not in 2008.

Eh, the Bay is where I've seen and met Bo Diddley, where I saw Ted Leo and got his autograph on my ticket, and where I saw Jimmy Buffett (which, sadly, was the worst show I've ever seen, it was part of the Tiki Time tour). I'd say that's pretty alright.
My actual hometown has turned into a giant packet of hardcore bands/dancers (read: shit) and a few good bands who never get any gigs because they're not shitty hardcore bands.

That's not quite the same though. I've seen Ted Leo in a venue that can hold 300 people, I've drank with Against Me! after they came here before Searching for a Former Clarity, almost saw Wolf Parade RIGHT when Apologies came out (was too young), saw Calvin Johnson (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v116/BrittanyMarie/Calvin%20Johnson/Calvin1.jpg) and Mt. Eerie with about a dozen other people, and my ex headbutted Wesley Willis and then they took him out to Denny's*. That doesn't really mean anything about the music scene other than that our location is fantastic, so bands going from the twin cities to Seattle play here on the way.
Though actually, going straight up with shows and bands coming out of the area, I think Victoria and Vancouver BC, Portland OR and Olympia WA, Athens GA, and probably Montreal are the hot spots now.
*I didn't mean that to be "My rock cock is bigger than yours!" but it came out that way. Sorry!

I am actually pro-any-b52s-ever, though I'm surprised you didn't mention the Elephant 6, most of which are based out of Athens. There's been a lot of noteworthy artists since though, my favorite being Jucifer.
HOWEVER, I was probably guilty of simplifying the Bay area's scene. I was talking to a fella from the area (He is the bassist in Chow Nasty) and he said the good thing about the Bay area is that it's an AREA and there are many different things coming from each city. Oakland doesn't really sound like SF, which doesn't sound like SJ, and so on.
Fuck you, I love Love Shack. I made a music video of it when I was 8 and it is the best music video ever.
