Okay, rather than make two threads, I'm combining two.
The first thread is just curiosity on my part - how many of your favourite bands still exist? Not as in, are still alive, as in are still recording/touring, and reformations count.
Looking at my list, artists that still exist/reformed/are active:
Ryan Adams
Beastie Boys
Billy Talent
BRMC
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Bob Dylan
Eminem (working on a new album)
Gallows
Glassjaw
Green Day
Hard Fi
Hell Is For Heroes
Hundred Reasons (though they are sans label)
Jacob's Stories
The Mars Volta
The MC5 (for what it's worth, the two most important members are dead)
Nine Inch Nails
Oasis
Outkast
Paramore
Plan B
Artists that are on hiatus/broken up/dead/inactive:
blink-182
Blur
Dr. Dre (has been 'working on' Detox for something like eight years)
Faith No More
Fony
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Hope of the States
Joy Division/New Order
Mansun
NWA
Notorious BIG
Pink Floyd
Okay, that's blatantly too many. The point is, about half of my favourite artists are inactive, even modern ones that I got into as they debuted. That's depressing, does anyone else find a similar trend?
The other reason I started this thread was for recommendations. And not in the completely general 'LOL I LIKE THESE GUYS WHO SHOULD I LIKE?' way. I mean, what should I buy by these artists:
Poison The Well
Thrice - I'm interested in their concept double album based on the elements but it seems very pricey, and is it a good place to start with a four-EP collection???
Led Zeppelin - Keeping in mind, I'm looking to only ever buy ONE release by Led Zep. I like 'Kashmir' and 'No Quarter.' Recommend me a Best Of.
Nas
Go for it.
-
Most of my favorite artists are still touring, here is a few of those not:
Frank Zappa (Zappa Plays Zappa is an acceptable substitute given that I never saw the real thing live.)
Faith No More (Mike Patton is still around, but I don't like his latter material / bands / projects nearly as much.)
Talking Heads (David Byrne solo work is good, but it is not Talking Heads.)
Pink Floyd
-
Hey, Grown Backwards is so awesome.
Anyway, a list of bands that I like that have kicked the bucket:
June of 44
Rodan
Silkworm
Archers of Loaf
Vitreous Humor
Blur
Elliott Smith
Mister Metaphor (I posted one of their EPs on the mediafire thread (http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,19792.msg687462.html#msg687462))
The Dismemberment Plan
Chisel
Hum
Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes
Hefner
Fugazi (for all intents and purposes)
Pavement
Polvo oops.
Q and Not U
Unwound
Talking Heads
Shiner
Refused
McLusky
Joy Division
The Jam
Husker Du
Boys Life
Josef K
Note that the majority of this list is probably the majority of the music I actually listen to.
-
For me, very few bands I listen to are defunct, but a few are:
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Jimi Hendrix
System of a Down
Conception
Pantera
Liquid Tension Experiment
-
Going off my somewhat small collection here. I just opened up my respective music player and went off bands I still like (not absolute favorites) and had full CDs by. So a fair share of my music collection isn't on this list.
Still around:
Arctic Monkeys
Daft Punk
Explosions in the Sky
Foo Fighters
The Killers
Muse
Oceansize
Radiohead
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Solids
Tool
Weezer
White Stripes
Defunct/Hiatus:
Blink 182
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Led Zeppelin
Nirvana
Pink Floyd
Queen
System of a Down
To give you a reccomendation for Led Zeppelin. Mothership is a pretty decent compilation. This is in the terms that I haven't listened to everything they've recorded and I enjoyed this. I'm sure someone with more expertise will come along soon.
-
I was wondering who Walter Malling was when he came up in discussion of Boys Life on EA.
-
Additional question:
Keeping in mind I'm not looking to specifically investigate past one CD, as far as Funkadelic is concerned, should I go for cohesion (Maggot Brain) or should I got for quantity (The Whole Funk And Nothing But The Funk, which does include 'Maggot Brain' itself)?
-
How in fuck has no one mentioned Neutral Milk Hotel yet?
On topic, I've just gotten exposed to a lot of classic stuff by bands from the 80s/90s, but besides Pavement, I'm not sure how many of them are still active. Is My Bloody Valentine still around?
I know I could just look it up on Wikipedia, but I just love you guys so much.
-
Defunked bands:
Coil
The Birthday Party
Aphex Twin (sort of, not really)
Kyuss
-
Anyway, a list of bands that I like that have kicked the bucket:
snip
Pretty much every band on that list is a band I was going to list. I even thought of making a similar Polvo joke.
I will add:
Don Cab - I think we concluded in the Don Cab thread a couple days ago the new incarnation doesn't count.
Sleater-Kinney
Bear vs Shark - this one makes me the most sad, because while Don Cab and Sleater-Kinney both had pretty awesome careers, Bear vs Shark only had two albums and they were just starting to get truly amazing.
-
How in fuck has no one mentioned Neutral Milk Hotel yet?
For real.
Is My Bloody Valentine still around?
I think they are. I thought Pavement were still around? Are they on a hiatus due to Stephen Malkmus doing his own thing or something?
Of my favorites, most of them are still around. Ones that come to mind that are defunct are:
Bear vs. Shark
The Olivia Tremor Control
Braid
Seam
Superchunk
Faraquet
The Libertines
The Pixies
Jets to Brazil
Cap'n Jazz
-
Pavement stopped being around for a while, but it wouldn't surprise me if they've gotten over it. I don't think they've started recording or anything though.
But Stephen Malkmus has been fairly busy what with his solo stuff and the Silver Jews.
-
Elliott Smith
Beulah
Beatles
Sleater-Kinney
Silkworm
Grandaddy
The Unicorns
Oh Well
Thank God for Sloan and Radiohead I guess!
-
Aw man, I'll add Beulah to my list, then.
-
Well, Miles Kurosky is SUPPOSED to put out his first solo album this year, and it'll basically sound like Beulah anyway, so you have that to look forward to.
-
Call me out of the loop, but I had no idea Grandaddy was defunct. And I love Sumday so much, too...
-
SOPHTWARE SLUMP IS BETTERRRRR
(I love Sumday too.) Yeah, they announced their disbandment before they released their last album in 2006. I was very sad; they were my first favorite "indie rock" band.
-
Oh, okay, as long as it was recent. I wasn't too out of the loop.
Also, you inspired me to go out and spend $12 on that album at the local record store. I'm listening to it right now, and it's damn good, even without all the nostalgia value Sumday has for me.
-
How in fuck has no one mentioned Neutral Milk Hotel yet?
Because they get mentioned so much on here that I am never going to listen to a fucking note of their music due to how masturbatory the praise of them is?
As for My Bloody Valentine, they're 'still' around, are they? I thought they'd reformed.
Pavement broke up in '99... only ten years out of the loop...
-
I only listen to bands that make brand new music.
p.s. I am ok with this
Listen to Crookers, you cunts
-
i don't think i could NOT listen to bands from the olden days, music is ageless
kudos to liking crookers
and yes i'm still saddened over the death of pavement
*gets hsi crooked rain album and sobs for the next twenty minutes*
-
Pavement's breakup never really saddened me per se, they put out enough great stuff while they were together that I'm too busy listening to Wowee Zowee, Slanted and Enchanted, and Crooked Rain to really care.
Because they get mentioned so much on here that I am never going to listen to a fucking note of their music due to how masturbatory the praise of them is?
In all honesty, if you listened to them after hearing all the rabid worship that goes on, you'd probably just end up being disappointed anyway.
-
In all honesty, I think it's deserved praise. As far as my memory serves me, I think they are more sparsely mentioned than, say, Boris, Slint, Bedhead, and Sloan as well as a couple of others.
-
Perhaps on this particular forum. But if you look on Pitchfork, for instance, the love for the album is completely insane. And when I mentioned that he might be disappointed I wasn't saying anything about the band's quality; all in all, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is probably my favorite album of all time, and it totally deserves most, if not all, of the praise leveled at it.
I hope that didn't sound like the rantings of a fanboy.
-
I think it's fair to say I'm never going to listen to it. The constant droning praise, it's like they're this forum's Beatles. And I can never quite get past the name 'Neutral Milk Hotel.' It's like, 'what's three random words that might fit together? Hmm, something that suggests we don't have a stance on anything... some sort of dairy product... and a place you can stay the night... Unbiased Cheese Travelodge?'
-
Well in the last year two of my favourite ever bands have kinda in a way reformed. I'm quite excited and so have listened to nothing but them for a few months (The Wild Swans & My Bloody Valentine). I do love my early 80s Liverpool scene indie - lots of bombast, portentous lyrics and sweeping synths. MBV just...changed my outlook on music and life, they're that good.
-

The name makes it uncomfortable to bring up with the uninitiated, for sure. But just give the In the Aeroplane Over the Sea a listen, just in case you find yourself liking them. Just make sure to not think about any of the praise, getting your expectations super high before listening to a band can cause you to hate them prematurely.
-
Exactly!
-
Some bands I like that are still active:
Interpol
NOFX (Although they've stated exactly when they're breaking up: exactly three years after Bad Religion does)
Less Than Jake
Louis XIV
Minus the Bear
Modest Mouse
Queens of the Stone Age
Rogue Wave
A Wilhelm Scream
Against All Authority
Inactive:
Led Zeppelin
Operation Ivy
Assorted Jelly Beans
Pink Floyd
The Clash
The Ramones
The Replacements
Hüsker Dü
Death From Above 1979
Cream
System of a Down
Television
Dire Straits
-
All of my favourite artists exclusively played at open mic nights before either committing suicide, OD'ing on heroin or selling out to the man. Needless to say, they were heaps better than all your bands.
-
I try not to let a band's praise or criticism prevent me from giving them the old college try. I mean, if I like the music--- what else matters?
I take the same attitude.
Except, for some reason in this case. I have no idea why that is.
-
inactive bands that i like are:
Nausea
Pantera
L7
Faith No More
Ministry
The Smiths
Black Flag
Joy Division
-
The Replacements, Minutemen, Rocket From The Crypt, The Clash, Pixies, fIREHOSE, Hüsker Dü, Archers of Loaf, Jawbreaker, Sleater-Kinney, Uncle Tupelo, Number Girl (12)
The Hold Steady, Against Me!, X, Modest Mouse, The Ergs!, The Weakerthans, Polysics, Gogol Bordello, R.E.M., Lucero, The Aggrolites (11)
So, it's about even, but there are mitigating factors even there, as I don't own anything X put out after Billy Zoom left the band (and also they did break up for a long while, and haven't recorded anything since reforming), and the only R.E.M. albums I listen to on a regular basis are Murmur and Reckoning.
-
Exactly!
Your avatar is perfect for saying things like that.
-
some inactive bands I still listen to:
blood brothers
neutral milk hotel
elliot smith
the get up kids
reggie and the full effect (soon to be inactive. he's about to start his final tour)
cap'n jazz
patrick suaze (she's like the wind is fucking great)
-
Most of the bands I listen to are from the 60s, and the ones that are still around suck.
-
Motherfuckers. The Exploding Hearts. Srs.
-
Uncle Tupelo
I'm listening to Anodyne for the 7th time since I got it yesterday.
-
How in fuck has no one mentioned Neutral Milk Hotel yet?
My thoughts exactly.
I would GIVE MY LIFE to see Jeff Mangum live.
Too bad he's not reforming NMH any time soon :-(
Edit: Also, to add. Yes, Pitchphork has ruined bands like MBV, NMH, and Radiohead somewhat for me. But I still like them anyway despite the rabid fanbases.
-
I only listen to bands that make brand new music.
p.s. I am ok with this
Listen to Moulinex, you cunts
:-D
Still pretty bummed about The Cooper Temple Clause though... and Out Hud I suppose.
-
Not many of my favourite bands are defunct. Pavement, Pulp and Hefner are the main three, but also The Auteurs and Kenickie and Black Box Recorder and Dogs Die In Hot Cars and I guess Elliott Smith is "defunct", which sucks.
-
"Latter Days" by Zeppelin has "No Quarter" and "Kashmir" on it, and "Trampled Underfoot" which is my favourite on that disc.
Hmm.....HMMM...HM!
Still around:
Jethro Tull
The Moody Blues
Focus
Enya
Melanie
Bob Dylan (Saw him last year!)
Penny Whiskey
Safka
Metallica
Defunct:
Pantera
L7
Beatles
Robert Johnson (ha...)
Bands I'm not too sure about?
Traffic
Toy Dolls
-
the dismemberment plan.
sleater-kinney.
FUGAZI.
elliott smith.
talking heads.
the beatles.
jawbreaker.
pavement.
neutral milk hotel!
sebadoh.
SLINT.
jeff buckley.
DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979.
joy division.
this is a depressing list. i'm sure there are tons i forgot.
still around:
radiohead!
dinosaur jr.
weezer (though they might as well have broken up. can still see their good stuff live though)
low (THANK GOD)
the moody blues
the cure
queens of the stone age
r.e.m.
swervedriver
MY BLOODY VALENTINE (WOO)
-
Ones that aren't about anymore/Defunct:
A Tribe Called Quest
Death Before 1979
The Fugees
The Pharcyde
Lords of The Underground
Mc Hammer
... I can't think of anymore.
-
Some favourite bands that are still active:
Underworld
Wire
(seeing either of these two bands live are way up the top of my "things to do" list. Fortunately Underworld will be here in a month or so)
Okkervil River
This Will Destroy You
AFI
Gang of Four (they're still together, right?)
NOFX
Radiohead
Wolf Parade
Interpol
Some that are not:
Blur
Joy Division
Fugazi
The Clash
The Unicorns
The Blood Brothers
Mclusky
(These three have a common thread that I like the projects that followed them (Islands/Jaguar Love/Future Of The Left less so) but nowhere near as much as the original acts)
At The Drive-In (and I don't really enjoy Mars Volta and have no real knowledge of Sparta...)
I thought Pixies got back together? Did they break up again? (out of the loop)
-
The other reason I started this thread was for recommendations. And not in the completely general 'LOL I LIKE THESE GUYS WHO SHOULD I LIKE?' way. I mean, what should I buy by these artists:
Thrice - I'm interested in their concept double album based on the elements but it seems very pricey, and is it a good place to start with a four-EP collection???
I haven't listened to a lot of Thrice, but my girlfriend is a fan and tells me that The Artist In The Ambulance is a good place to start.
-
Pixies did indeed break up again.
-
Pink Floyd alternative recommendation-
The Secret Machines.
I had to say it. That's about as helpful as I'll be in this kind of thread, sadly.
-
Led Zeppelin - Keeping in mind, I'm looking to only ever buy ONE release by Led Zep. I like 'Kashmir' and 'No Quarter.' Recommend me a Best Of.
First off, there is no way to get a 'best of' compilation that will completely cover their best shit. Because just about anything from their formation up to Physical Graffiti is brilliant.
Second off, get Physical Graffiti or you suck at Zeppelin.
-

It is when you hate them.
Because just about anything from their formation up to Physical Graffiti is brilliant.
I disagree.
Second off, get Physical Graffiti or you suck at Zeppelin.
I don't care about sucking at Zeppelin.
-
Gaz that's because you have no soul.
-
for the Poison the Well and Thrice recs:
for PTW - they're all great, although I'm partial to The Opposite of December, You Come Before You, and Tear From the Red (in decreasing order of preferred-ness) - I guess you could say Versions is their most 'accessible' - but for me it is their least interesting and engaging album. I'd say: if you like xhardcorex - Opposite of Dec / if you like solid songwriting - You Come Before You
for Thrice - it depends on what sounds you like. All their albums sound a bit different. Their earlier stuff is a lot more punky/hardcore/metal type stuff, and The first Alchemy Index(Indices?) album has some electronic and ambient elements to it. MY favorite's of theirs are The Artist in the Ambulance (their heaviest) and Vheissu (most 'balanced') - but that's just me.
-
Thanks Harun, you've been a big help. No bullshit.
now you're being all Radically-Islamic "Fuck Zeppelin" on us.
Congratulations, I hate you.
-
now you're being all Radically-Islamic "Fuck Zeppelin" on us.
Congratulations, I hate you.
For making fun of radical Islam?
-
For pointing out that he doesn't like Zeppelin. That's a guaranteed faux pas.
-

Congratulations, I hate you.

Gaz doesn't take bigotry too well. Neither do I, for that matter. Tread lightly.
-
Pat = right.
-
Man I am well-known for being a dick about religion on a fairly regular basis but it was just an unnecessary thing to say.
-
Seriously? Only one Nirvana mention in the entire thread?
Favorite Still Active Band= Static-X
Favorite Inactive Band= Nirvana
-
Caspain, keep in mind where you are :-P
-
And how recockulously overrated Nirvana are.
-
I would never make fun of conventional Islam. That's against just about everything I believe in.
By radical-Islam, I mean fundamentalism in general, something I attribute to cold seriousness and not much else. Islam is just the most prominent example of fundamentalism, so I mentioned it as well.
Islam is a beautiful and compelling religion and one that I think would set an example for other religions if not for the bad stereotypes running rampant in our media. I think that people who think being a Moslem is a bad thing (like those people who "accuse" Barack Obama of being one) are low and ignorant.
Regardless, I was a douche, and the implications I'd made were bad. I'm deleting my original post so no further misconception can be made.
To briefly go back to the Zeppelin thing, you should get this two-disk "Best of" appropriately named "The Best of Led Zeppelin". I got it for ten bucks new. Don't buy it on Amazon because it sells both CDs seperately, but if that's the only deal you find, and the one I got was a mutant or something, get the Latter Days disk, because it has both No Quarter and Kashmir on it.
-
i listen to so much random shit that it'd take me ages to go through and list all that are defunct now (although not as many as are still around, admittedly), but i feel, following your thrice mentionage, i should make the following recommendation - if you like thrice, particularly Vheissu, you MUST check out "Lions Write History" by In Pieces. yeah, they're defunct, but that album was awesome.
-
And how recockulously overrated Nirvana are.
Lies and slander.
-
Regardless, I was a douche, and the implications I'd made were bad. I'm deleting my original post so no further misconception can be made.
Previous comments cheerfully withdrawn.

I am posting in this thread again because I listened to Rites of Spring for the first time last night, and was pretty blown away. I think I liked End on End better than most Fugazi stuff I've listened to, which was certainly surprising. And I was disappointed to find that Guy Picciotto hasn't really done any other lead vocals. Any suggestions of bands that capture the same kind of Rites of Spring thing, whether because they're early emocore, or because Guy is singing?
-
All Through a Life is a pretty rad E.P.
