I propose that wombats are awesome. Other awesome animals include (but are not limited to) Giraffes, Platypi, and Salmon.

I am deeply ashamed for having missed the Tapir, noblest of the Animals Who Are Up To No Good.
I hope this winter is a fast one, I need another nice spring.
Heehehehhehheheh.. fast winter. I'm in Alaska, we're just about to hit zero degrees farenheit, it's getting a little cool.. :)

I spent a month or two in Valdez, we had a snow fort built into the front yard that had a window overlooking the street.. from 20 feet up.
I have stepped down from a snowbank to the roof of my house. Snow is awesome and terrifying.

Truly in the spirit of this thread!
Raccoons are awesome also, Did you know some fool imported racoons into Germany in the 1930's? They spent all of the 60's, 70's, and 80's trying to extirpate them. No luck with that. Now they are migrating into France. (History repeating itself?)

Bah, those places look worse than they are. Once you get to a certain temperature, it gets too cold to snow. The cold sucks all the moisture out of the air and it literally can't precipitate.
I'm in the Canadian prairies. It's -20 Celsius here (that's -4 for those of you who speak Fahrenheit) and we have no snow outside. It's been cold or it's been precipitating. We had freezing rain about a month ago, but nothing since then. Weird.
-
Sloths are amazing. Slow moving animals covered in an algae that makes sure that any big cats steer clear of them? Pretty awesome.
That said, Sloths do have one horrifying enemy...
The car
Poor guys never see them coming...
-
My father's mother was from Manitoba and his father from Quebec. I think that is why I'm from NYC.
And in north Texas, no one has snow removal equipment. If it snows, we just wait for it to melt.

Interestingly, I can see the original post and the quote on the same screen, and the "cars" are out of synch.
*edit* and the "quote" quote is out of synch with the quote. I guess the text area keeps getting slightly shorter due the nested quote boxes.

Man, try living in the American Midwest. This summer was regularly over 100, with 80% humidity. Winter hasn't really gotten good and started yet, but we had a ton of snow last year, and we almost alway have at least one major ice storm where I live. I wish I lived in a place with EITHER a terrible summer OR a terrible winter. Of course, I've only seen a few snowbanks taller than myself, and I am rather short.

Ah geez, I'd die. I'd probably literally die. I spent a summer in Chicago, and spent most of it face down in the shower with the water on cold.

Oh man, I've always thought of Chicago as having a relatively pleasant summer what with the nice winds that stir up over the lake and everything. My husband is from there and jokes that the whole city is air conditioned (of course this past summer was an exception). He and his family never stop complaining about how awful Kansas City summers are.

Oh, we hit triple digits in the summer, too. There's actually not much midpoint, probably much like you. Hot in the summer, cold in the winter, spring and fall each last about a week, just long enough for the drastic temperature change.
Why do we live here? Heating/air conditioning.

Where I'm currently living (Guadalajara, Mexico) we're at 26 degrees Celcius at noon, and as I type, it's 21°C. Coldness here means 1°C at 5 AM, in January. Last time it snowed here was in 13th of December, 1997, five centimetres at the outskirts, which promptly melted as soon as the sun rise.
Yet people are complaining that it's too cold. :psyduck:
At the Zoo of Guadalajara we have polar bears. Poor boys in May eat fish popsicles all day long (38°C at noon). Yet in summer the heat is around 33°C. I love this city.

May I inquire where on the prairies? Your clearly not in the grubby hellhole that is Edmonton. We have plenty of snow to go around, if you'd like.
Edit-Ferrets are the best animals ever.

*chews nails* We had 14 foot drifts last Christmas ... I got stuck sleeping on my grandmother's couch with my little brother who kicks in his sleep ... I want as little snow as possible this year. And no brother sharing my couch! My shins were bruised for a week!

It basically never snows in Sydney, though a few years ago there was a freak light dusting in the western (inland) part of the city. Up in the southern mountains of course there is skiing in winter. Our main problem with frozen water falling from the sky is hailstorms in summer. Hailstones can be as big as this:
And hard enough to smash roof-tiles, punch fist-sized holes through the laminated windscreens of parked cars etc. You don't want to be caught out in the open.
-
As adorable as the baby tapir was ... Ever see a baby sugar glider? I'd post a pic of my friend's but I dunno how. And EEK to tennis-ball sized hail

I would like to say that I am strongly in favor of penguins.

North Texas had its greatest snow day ever last year right around Valentines Day. It snowed 12-13in in about 24hrs, DFW shut down. Massive power outages, grocery stores like madhouses, it was insane. I built a 7ft tall snowman with some friends... IN TEXAS. Still blows my mind.
-
Where is "here"? Texas is great this time of year. Summertime not so much...
Texas, of course.
Central Texas, checking in! We get snow like once every three or four years, it's enough to make yards pretty and white but I've never seen it snow enough or remain cold enough to let it stick to the roads. Granted, we pay for this lovely mildness by having summers that are over 100 degrees for weeks in a row (I think we set a record this summer with 32 days in a row where the high was over 100, with a record high of 108 or something like that).
-
Iceland doesn't get all that cold in the lowlands but gets lots of snow.
Pennelope and Wil should move there. Years ago I read that it had the world's highest per capita number of bookstores. One of their major historical political figures is remembered primarily because of his poetry -- that's how much they respect poets.
-
Tapirs always reminded me a little of Tsathoggua from the Cthulhu Mythos.
-

Yes, we get those in North Texas also, frequently in company with tornadoes. But we are south of "tornado alley", that part of the central US where 40% of the world's tornadoes occur.

I remember that. Most of the guys at work are transfers from New Jersey, so we were all "Pish, what do you mean the supermarket is closed? It's just a little snow!" We really tick off the native Texans.

The local joke for Chicago is that if you don't like the weather, wait 15 minutes.
This summer had some gawdawful warm days, but the worst was the crazy fucking rain. Like several days straight, in June. And July. With nasty heat/humidity in between. I think I saw more mosquitoes this year than during the past decade combined.
We had some great Indian summer during October, but once we crossed the November threshhold, the city suddenly remembered it was autumn. Overnight frost, brrr... good time for blankets and kitties.

I liked the rain. >.> Although I don't seem to remember the heat/humidity you complain about. Then again, I'm out in the (far) suburbs. And yes, it's been rather cool the past couple of weeks.
Oh, and on the topic of animals, given that a lot of people seem to be from Texas... why weren't armadillos mentioned?

Oh, and on the topic of animals, given that a lot of people seem to be from Texas... why weren't armadillos mentioned?
Because armadillos aren't all that cute in person? Although my daughter thinks they are very cute. She also thinks koalas are very cute, and actually got to hold one when she visited Australia. She has also claimed that ostriches hate her. This was borne out recently: We went to a petting zoo at the Texas State Fair. There were hundreds of people there, and all the ostriches were glaring at her alone.
The Texas State Fair is pretty cool. It's bigger than, and almost as good as, the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show in New Jersey.

Well, Texas doesn't seem to have a lot of other native or semi-native animals that might qualify for the cute list... although a quick google search of "Texas Animals" brought up a picture of Meerkats of all things... must be from some zoo.
The last State Fair I remember attending was in Minnesota... although I think I might have passed through another one with not much memory of it (in Yosemite? Maybe?).

Meh, as stated, armadillos aren't that cute. In addition, knowing that they have A) Very Sharp Claws and B) A hellish combination of infectious bacteria all over said claws, they lose any cuteness they might have had.

i'd like to talk about the most awesome guy in this forum.

Finland checking in. Pretty mild here at the moment (a few degrees below zero centigrade or high 20s in Fahrenheits). May be one inch of snow. Nothing to prevent me from riding my bike to work (it's only an 8 mile commute). Northern Indiana (=Notre Dame) occasionally got a lot more snow than we get here. Thank the lake effect! I recall that one time I was flying home for Xmas, and the forecast was "-20 F and three to five feet of snow". You bet I took an earlier shuttle bus to make it to O'Hare in time.
Last summer was pretty bad here. Further inland it climbed up to an all time nation wide high of 99 Fahrenheit (37 centigrade). If the trend continues, we may the break the century mark any decade now...

God that was a beautiful thread.. All the Dick-Broom-Knights arrayed in their armored finery, their troll-green skin offset by all that hypocrisy chainmail, shining in the threadlight. I wonder who did the reporting?

Dammit, this thread is to specifically not talk about that.
In other news, it's snowing here in Winnipeg. About 10 CM overnight.

I'm jealous of people who get proper snow. We just get a few inches of it, people panic and everything grinds to a halt. I want proper decent snow dammit!
Also giraffes are the best animal. Everyone knows that.

When I was a kid growing up in Oklahoma, I swore I would move away from there as soon as I was able. There was everything from deep drifting snow in the winter, to softball sized hail (I literally sat in the city cafe one morning, and watched it punch holes in cars and other things that were not covered sufficiently), to vicious thunderstorms and tornadoes, with triple digit heat in the summer with HIGH humidity, and all the way down to 60 below in the winter.
I will never live there again.
I live in the desert now.

Oklahoma is the worst. You couldn't pay me to live there. Of course, living on the MO side of Kansas City I always said I would never live in Kansas, and yet here I am.

Arizona here.
I'm in the north end, and despite being on the opposite side of the country from Tornado Alley, we had tornados this year. Complete and utter bafflement of an entire state? You win this round, Nature.
Weather is currently in that lovely phase of:
Mornings: Freeze your tits off
Early Afternoon: Tits beginning to thaw
Late afternoon: Tits are demanding a bikini top in honor of deliciously warm sunshine
Evenings: Freezing again! :psyduck:
My loving family in Phoenix, having suffered through a typical Arizona "summer" (Who am I kidding? they have two seasons, one just lasts as long as three normal seasons.) is delighted to report that the weather down south is "Fantastic!" with days in the 70s, and cool upper 50s nights.
Jerks.
Warning! While you were typ--oh wait, no, nevermind. You're good. Sorry, bad habit.

I'm convinced I've seen it moving around before.
There is a version of his avatar that switches from the clip where Baloo is scratching his back to where the fox from Fox and the Hound is catching milk in it's mouth.
I'll leave it to you to figure out the implication.
Yea, thats the one.
Awesome!

oh, come on! You can't seriously believe that a pure hearted guy like Walter Disney would do something evil, or perverted!!

It never snows in california, at most you get a week or two of rain, maybe 3 months of overcast
-
West/central PA, the Allegheny mountains, where we have the regular four seasons;
Almost Winter.
Winter.
Still Winter.
And Road Construction. :police:

Holy Neck-bolted Fuckenstein, Batman, people were reporting posts in the WCDT? :psyduck: Wow. Pity we'll never know how stupidly long the thing would have gotten. Hopefully next week's won't get so unruly that it has to be shot in the face until dead.
And dang, Jeph even made and then locked his own behold-as-I-stab-the-forum-with-pics thread. Truly a banner* day.
But back to the topic at hand, I'm slightly concerned that my area (mid-Atlantic USA) will get similarly significant amounts of snowfall this year as last -- three feet of snow is NOT typical around here, and we just don't have the impressive snowplow force some areas have. That said, snow is pretty and I'd like it better if it didn't fuck up the roads and knock out our power. Maybe it's time to buy a generator.
Carl-E, is Road Construction not a year-round phenomenon in your area? Of course, I'm counting cones-blocking-lanes-but-no-work-being-done in that.
*banner = FAIL

Yeah, I fled the WCDT around 9 or 10 CST last night, so anything could have happened between then and this morning.
So we've handled weather and cute animals. Anyone seen any good movies lately?
-
I was re-watching episodes from the fourth season of Babylon 5 recently.
-
I've been re-watching "Firefly".
-
That thread was fun, but let's seriously never do that again...
I'm looking forward to it next week.
I'm not. I don't wanna get it started.
-
I'm thinking I'm gonna fire up the Netflix Fix and get me some Dr. Whom, Series 2, I think. I love me some angry little god.
-
I thought it was locked for the sole purpose of it not letting hit 40 pages.
I finished watching all Family Guy episodes today(except the latest). Took me long enough.

Naw, locked due to stupidity. People don't know the difference between trolling and opinions. Opinions are like assholes, everyones got one.

D
I'm in central Illinois, and we get the same type of weather without Lake Michigan's effects. The one aspect of this year's weather that I have only recently become aware of is the fleas. My father's cat was put to sleep just yesterday due to a viral infection that the vet believed was transmitted by fleas. She was an indoor cat, but it did not help out when they live in a farm community and have a number of cats that call their garage home. My parents have had to fumigate their home a couple of times this year due to flea infestation.
And we are now having to deal with some early cold weather. Of course it does not help that I live in a trailer (cold floors).

Anyone seen any good movies lately?
I went to see Harry Potter 7.1 this afternoon in IMAX. Not terrible at all. And, given where they broke off, 7.2 is going to be a real rip-snorter.

I'm about to go see this myself!! I'm so excited! And happy to hear it was 'not terrible at all'. ;)
-
Just went and bought HP#5 so I could catch up before going to see 7. They didn't have 6 in stock so I need to go a-searchin' and then sit down and watch everything back-to-back. Definitely going to try to see the new one on IMAX, we finally got one at a local theater.

IMHO, "not terrible at all" is an understatement. It's the best one so far and for the first time out of all the HP movies, I really felt like I was watching an adaptation of the book. Very, VERY good.
-
Still haven't read the last HP book, I waited until my sister has read it, now I just forgot about it. Yet i hope i don't have to turn away from the forum again to not get spoilered(again)

West Texas checking in!
We've had snow once already. I moved to Texas to get AWAY from the bloody stuff. This better not be like last winter. ::grumble curse complain::
-
Oklahoma checking in. Land of tornadoes and winters full of ice.
It's currently 41 degrees and the high tomorrow will be in the 70s. Pretty nice...too bad it's just going to end horribly with 3 inches of ice on the ground at some point in the next few weeks. Oh well, HP tomorrow night.

This thread is now about chiyochan. XD

A chick I know who is a huuuuuge Potter nerd was all upset and calling it epic fucking fail, but from what I've heard critics are saying it's the one where they stop having fun at Hogwarts and have to go out and do hard shit. Which is good, because that was what the damn book was all about.

Like every HP movie, tons of explication are left out or compressed, because everyone knows that stuff already and no one wants to see a 12-hour movie. If you'd only seen the other movies and never read the books you'd be OK. We (me, wife, 22-year-old daughter) really liked it. Regarding "not terrible at all", I consider telling someone whether a movie is really good or not something of a spoiler, so I'll only warn you about the real dogs.

No, this thread isn't.

If the social group blew up into small high-speed fragments (it won't), where should each character move?

WTF where are all the weekly discussion threads ?!?? :?
They're all gone ... or almost all gone ...

Road Construction starts soon before the first thaw when the orange cones bloom on the dividers, encroaching into the lanes a few feet at a time, until the road crews migrate in from the south. It ends abruptly at the first signs of black ice, although some of the more hardy dividers and barrels linger on late into winter.
Of course, the turnpike is in a slightly warmer zone, and watcing a crew fill in a sinkhole in the snow is one of he few joys of driving through our lovely state!
I'm up for HP 7.1, too. We always go watch a movie Turkey day while the bird's cooking, and that's one's the plan this year. Me, the wife, the kids (17 and 20 now). We've been through the whole shmeer, books and movies together. When the first book came out, I read it to the girls, a chapter or two before bed each night. Became a tradition, we did it with every book. I used to do radio and theatre, so I do everyone's voices (Hagrid's a tough one, I'm a tenor). A point of pride was how much Alan Rickman sounded like my version of Snape!

Marten- California.
Dora- also California (not knowing Marten also moved there).
Faye- Texas.
Hanners- space station
Angus- Washington DC.
Penelope- somewhere less than five miles from her current residence.
Pint size- New Jersey.
I can't think of appropriate places to send anyone else.
-
Faye won't move to Texas. She'd avoid anywhere "deep South". Maybe move to New Mexico or Arizona, to get away from the cold.
-
Next week is definitely gonna be interesting as far as the Comic goes.
Nothing like a bit of drama to spice the Christmas season up.

Yes, we went that route also, made more interesting by the fact my daughter was roughly Harry's age as each book came out. She actually read #7 out loud to the grownups on the drive to Texas while moving from New Jersey. When my wife brought the first book home and insisted I read out loud, I was not pleased because I had read a great deal of fantasy in my younger days, and didn't expect a children's book to be interesting. But Rowling had me at the end of chapter 1.
And also, I see we are getting some off-topic posts about QC in this thread.

I have the Nine Iron of Doom right here... need some reinforcement?
(And seriously - it's right here next to me, leaning next to my desk. Little on the old side, but it gets the job done.)

I'd invite you to come to my house and read the books to my kids, voices and all, but I can't think of a way to do it that doesn't make me sound like a creepy internet freak. Therefore...
Hey, look! A distraction! *points and flees*

We could talk about idiots getting the WCDT locked so it won't hit the golden 50 pages?
-
That's getting awfully close to the thin ice...
And Ocelott, it depends - where do you live?
-
I'm in the frozen wastelands of Canada. Doesn't that just make you want to zip on over?

Speaking of which, we in the Northwest would like our darn snow now please.
What is the best thing to talk about?
Katy Perry.
Yeah.
That's right.
Her I Kissed a Girl music video is feminism in a can.
Edit: Anti-thread Slain.

We did this, two weeks ago.
Keep up.
Oh, never mind - you're one of the recent arrivals...

Technically on-again, off-again longtime lurker with yearly analyses that people seem to consider boring or ignorant. Someone in the locked thread seemed to not be done with Katy Perry...?
Anyway, how about Lady Gaga? Is the "innovation and awesome and oh-no-she-di'n't" vs. "faux-European Madonna 1.5 dipped in utter commercialized superficiality" debate a relic of the stone age of a month ago?
Probably two hundred threads in the Music Talk....
Edit: Oh good looks like not.
-
We covered her too, and it was week before last, not the locked thread.
-
Shame.

I'd just like to say I'm having a ridiculous amount of fun making incredibly poorly designed staged in SSB: Brawl.
My pride and joy so far is an attempt to make a cage from which leaving is incredibly difficult.
